    I did the same trip a few years ago. Anchored in Porth Curno bay. Caught the tidal stream over to lands end. We left and arrived before dawn and hove to waiting for daylight. Then the mast fell down. We couldn't get the liferaft out of the locker and were drifting onto rocks. So fired off a flare and were rescued by the RNLI. We chopped the broken rig and made a jury rig, then spent a couple of wonderful days in the Scillies anchored between Bryher and Tresco. Then spend a week sailing back to Poole. We were planning to come back via Ploumanac'h, but the crew refused to sail overnight after the "experience"

    I can't decide if a thumbs up is the right emoji to use for your comment, the mast falling down and drifting to rocks sounds horrific! Glad all were ok and the time in the scillies was enjoyable at least. Any idea what caused the dismasting?

    Yes, be careful with your diesel sanitation. And if it is a stainless tank, you must get the seawater out of the bottom of it or the chlorine in the seawater will attack the stainless in short order.

    I don’t know that any salt water is in the tanks, when we cleaned them out they seemed rust free inside, but there is clearly bug left over from behind the baffling that we couldn’t reach. 😞

    @@CadohaAdventures Try some biocide in there. Sometimes it is worthwhile drilling an aperture on the top the other side of the baffle to you can get to the lowest part of the tank. Purge the muck, then seal the aperture again. It's horrible muck, I know, but if you can purge it and thereafter use biocide, it can be very clean thereafter. On my own boat, I do not use the external tank breathers - they are all internal. In a big sea, wave slap will squirt down the external apertures and get in to the tank.

    @@TroyaE117 I have put a load of biocide in but I think cutting another inspection hatch could be a good idea, it’s just close to impossible to do that without taking the tank out because it’s so hard to physically get on top of the other side.

    It wasn’t a tuna doco specifically, it’s called ‘Seaspiricy’ and was in Netflix. Some people are now making debunking videos, so I would would say watch it and all the rebuttals and see where your head and heart lays at the end of that process.

  • @CadohaAdventures

    @CadohaAdventures

    2 жыл бұрын

    Truth be told it’s not really a complicated passage, but you want to make sure you get your tides right for the lizard peninsula, or if you do what we did and anchor in Porth Curno, then you can leave the next morning and fly straight over, be sure to mind wolf rock and bam, you’re there 👌🏼⛵️ There’s a tiny moment when you skate the outside of a traffic separation zone, so keep an eye out and a ear on the radio, but it’s really a straight forward crossing. When you’re over there then that’s when you need your wits about you, be sure to keep an eye on the weather and be happy to leave if it looks like a blow is on the way as there’s practically no shelter from a storm.
