How did we not know this? - (Lessons from our sailing adventure)

We've seen these massive concrete blocks several times but we had no idea just how important they were! In this flying visit to Portland we discovered an ancient pirates grave, collected a mountain of post, and we learned an amazing lesson about the Mulberry harbours and got an even greater insight into the levels of genius which were on our side and ultimately why we won the war.

Half way through watching this vid now and I have three points for you; one informative, one safety and one to help you get some tucker. 1. Wallaby's - looked like a load of Rock Wallaby's to me. 2. Do NOT freedive below one metre with your snorkel in your mouth. Big no-no !! 3. You move too much on the seabed, you move too quickly on the seabed, you do not allign your wrist and forearm for the shot when you extend for the shot. I think you try to reach out because fish not coming to you. Fish not coming closer because you give away your position by moving. Love your videos and your family and your attitudes.

Appreciate the feedback there. What’s the issue with the snorkel being in my mouth? When I take it out it flaps all in front of my mask and is very off-putting, so that’s why I tend to leave it in place.

The “kangaroos” look like rather a large type of rock wallaby. Wallabies generally a finer built than these, rock wallabies are thicker set and have the thicker tails, but I’ve never seen them so big. That may have to do with the unlimited food they have available in captivity.

In WWII the Admiralty took over my old school in Bath. The D-Day landings were partly planned from there and the Mulberry harbours were code named from the Mulberry tree outside the window. Apparently it was struck by lightening after the war and the wood got turned into lots of key rings etc. in woodworking classes.

Dominic so far as I am aware concrete modules used for the mulberry system like those you discussed did not float at their destination they were designed to be towed from England to France then sunk to the sea bed after the invasion beachheads had been established. Locations for them were predetermined under the noses of occupying German forces by a commando unit known as 'the Special Boat Service' which I believe still exists today and has basically become an English counterpart to the US Navy 'Seals'. The reason Mulberry modules were sunk was to establish not only breakwaters to mitigate the effects of waves but as you say to also provide stable landing platforms for unloading provisions which were transported ashore via 'roads' supported on pontoons. Another interesting but little known aspect associated with the Mulberry system was a specially created flexible pipeline which was laid across the bed of the channel from England to France to ensure a reliably consistent supply of fuel for vehicles because it was safe from interruption by air attacks to which surface vessels were obviously vulnerable.

The Domes (sorry Darleks) rhe the excellent Sampson Radars, If you search for a page navy lookout sampson radars it will tell you everything about them (that's not classified). The Mulberry's were built when the beaches were relatively safe (i.e. the combat had been pushed back) but before Caen was taken. They also built and layed a "pipeline under the ocean" PLUTO to pump fuel across. My grandad actually landed on Gold beach in the first wave at D+15minutes - he said even when they were moving off the beach people were already landing with bulldozers to fill in shell holes and roadways up the beach. If you go to Normandy you can still see the Mulberrys there.

Yeah, the Mulberry Harbor was scheduled to last until the American D-Day forces could land on the beach, travel inland 20 miles or so, then turn right to take the natural harbor at Cherbourg. Unfortunately a terrible storm shortly after D-Day destroyed the Mullberry Harbor. One last note for all to think about: "the British, Canadian, and American men who died in the D-Day landing and subsequent battles gave up all of their tomorrows for our today." - Stephen Ambrose (Author of Band of Brothers). :¬) Webhead USA

Big thanks to Winston Churchill for giving the ok to build these amazing platforms (2 each). The Mulberry's didn't get over to Normandy under after the D-Day invasion. They came over in the second way of the invasion. If they had of been placed in the waters outside of Normandy before the first invasion, Rommel would of had them blown out of the water. After the Mulberry's were put in place a huge sea storm hit and one of the two Mulberry's was destroyed. A little English WW2 history for you.

We sail to different destinations all the time, the south west coast is packed full of amazing spots that we still haven’t been to. If you mean different countries, I have no idea. It’s just a vlog about living on a boat full time, where we go, what we do, and how we do it. The content is just whatever we enjoy making and sharing. At the moment we enjoy being here and exploring all there is both above and below the waves, yes we are trying to be more self reliant and eat more how Mother Nature actually intended us to, which is something we’re enjoying learning, developing and sharing. I think most importantly we’re making videos that we will enjoy looking back on when we’re 80 and reminiscing all the fun we had while living on a boat, regardless of where that may take us. I used to think the grass was always greener on the other side, and after travelling much of the world already, I didn’t realise just how magnificent this little island nation really is, until we bought Cadoha! That’s the great thing about there being so many channels with people living on boats now, at the click of a button you, we, all of us can be instantly teleported to another part of the world and see what life’s like there. You do such a nice job with your videos--great editing, great shots, great content, great music, and just a mote of ah-Ha! Metric for weight and standard for distance? It's so confusing for us colonials! That's metric mote, by the way.

Ha ha, I remember an American guy in Vegas, who I was playing poker with, ribbing me about that. I tried to tell him we're metric in England and he said 'Yeah? OK, what's your speed limit on the motorway? Or, how tall are you?" 🤣 He had me there.

Local Knowledge. It looks like you are in hope cove at the moment. I know nothing about the Bigbury area but the Yealm is probably worth a visit but it does get busy this time of year. If you are going into the Plymouth area and like Gunkholing (dinghy exploring drying creeks) on an incoming tide check out St Germans river ( also known as River Lynher.) I have spent a reasonable amount of time on the hook about 1/2 mile in from the entrance ( you need to watch your draught) but stay well clear of the naval shore based establishments or you will be questioned by the river police. West of plymouth my knowledge is less.

We do love a bit of local knowledge. We have already popped into Plymouth for a couple of days as the wind shifted in Hope cove. We anchored off in a spot called 'Barn Pool'. I went to dingy Hank to shore for his last toilet break of the day and by this time it was dark, about 10:30pm. Just as I was landing the dingy, a Marine jumped out of nowhere, like a stealth, slightly intimidating looking, jack-in-the-box and asked me what I was doing? Turned out they were practicing landing crafts in the pitch black with no lights on their crafts. Nearly gave me a heart attack 😵
