My website and articles www.chasinglatitudes.com
Welcome to Chasing Latitudes! Have you ever imagined the smell of the ocean air as your boat crashes through the waves? The freedom that comes from casting off the bow lines and heading out to sea to explore new places you can’t reach by car or airplane? Then this channel is for you.
You will not see white sand beaches here, restaurant reviews, beach parties, selfies or Japanese knives. What you will find is factual information based on decades of sailing experience.
My channel is specifically meant for one thing and one thing only, to help YOU find your new to you fancy-dancy yacht of your dreams and get on the water in the fastest, most time efficient manner.
Don’t get caught up in looking at old boats! I focus on mostly newer vessels, built in 2000 or later because I want you to spend as much of your time as possible sailing, not practicing your restoration skills on an old boat attempting to bring it to its former glory.

I really enjoy your honest take on the Sailing content out there. The problem with KZread Sailing Channels today is that there are too many people that want to be KZreadrs, and not enough people that want to be sailors, delivering content in a genuine, honest, and drama free manner! Thanks again and subscribed. :)

Your take on most channels is right on. And its not just a thing in the sailing channel space. People are pumping out click bait thumbs and phony content in all genres. We have a baby channel about Alaska. We are real Alaskans with decades of experience up here. But there's a stampede of phony Alaskans headed North with youtube stars in their eyes. Many of them miraculously land here and have the most amazing success with every endeavor they try. Almost NONE give a true and accurate portrayal of what it's really like up here.

Hey Chris, the other thing that I don't hear talked about with buying an older boat and sailing off to your dreams is, tanks, water and diesel. What is the difference between a 15-20 yr. old tank and a 40? Do you just replace them? Insert a bladder? Hire a tank guy like Dirty Jobs? I wonder about people getting sick on boats on vacation.

I agree about the issue with content being behind. An example of that was the first channel we watched, Sailing Soulianis, they were months behind. They also sailed kind of intermittently ultimately stalling on Florida with life changes etc. They ultimately sold that boat and went in a direction that lost our interest. They did have good video and editing skills but ultimately to slowed them down a lot. Content producers do need to try harder to get the videos out. Content on a channel with refits vs. sailing, vs. destinations can be a challenge especially as it shifts. I do agree that fake or overly melodramatic drama and bikini shots aren't going to sustain a channel. There are things that happen and you can talk about that but they have to consider if its going to come across as too much or a just click bait.

Excellent video. I see so many YT creators go through the same stages on their content. Having a background in TV production I can say it is not easy nor sustainable to stay in production, especially if you don't have a production plan, you will eventually burn. You might nail a couple of episodes, but most of your content will suck. 99% of YT creators don't have enough technical knowledge or education in filmmaking, other than what they have seen on tv and on line, that limits their resources in terms of cinematic grammar (whatever that is, I have a degree in filmmaking). Shows become inevitably repetitive as a result, this also explains why so many YTubers change genres so often. Real TV shows have producers (planing content, arranging production from schedules to permits, sponsors, etc..), writers (so people don't say "Hey guys!" every two sentences), a director (making sure everyone stays on track, from talent, to visuals, to audio, to post), camera crew (show, don't tell, if it doesn't happen in front of t he camera, it didn't happen) and audio crew (audio is like a dress you put on your production, without it your show looks naked, and not in a good way). The thing is many people believed in what Discovery calls, 'character driven' shows, like those people fixing bikes or digging for gold. Those are made to look simple in terms of production but in reality they are heavily scripted and require a ton of production and post production. Even those shows are not sustainable, and burn after a few seasons, that is completely normal in TvLand. In YTland they have mental breakdowns instead, not good, I'm really sorry for those good people. I enjoy your videos very much, your honesty and bluntness are appreciated.

Your channel has helpful content but attacking and deriding your competitors is a strategy that does you discredit. I am no liberal snowflake - I fought to secure my financial security and come very much from the school of hard knocks. Your content is often very helpful, you clearly have good experience and articulate your advice very well. That alone is all you need to help grow your Chanel/business. Your audience isn’t stupid, it understands what it wants and whom it chooses to watch. If you throw enough shit around within any market place, in the end it always comes back to hit you.

Before Parley left Mexico he stupidly did a live stream or was it two, one before the equator and one right on top of it. I don't really bother, but after that, every time I viewed a new episode, I was a little irritated, it didn't feel right. I am astonished GBU is so high up. The rebuilding of the interior took ages and I didn't view every episode any more. If I ever get me a boat for world sailing, Doodles will be responsible, I was sailing Fireball in younger years, travelling from race to race at weekends. His early videos made me a YT sailing fanboy. Doodles showed me, you can fulfil your dreams if you really go for it. Evans is one of the fastest subscriber climbers. They talk too much too fast for my taste. Do you get an idea why WeSail got so few subscribers? I do like the couple, I like their videos, their cinematography, every other video they have some stunning film, pictures that make you really feel it, they tell a good story. Even on average, they do better cinematography than most other sailing channels. Different taste? Thanks for your content!

Totally agree on the big delay in episodes. It’s so annoying. I can see all these boats on GIS or other apps and I’ve specifically been trying to work out where they are in the world relative to the videos and they are mostly all months and months behind. I actually spotted in Parley another you tube channel in the back ground of their Patreon hook up in Tahiti (photo bombing) and both channels are currently showing themselves in the atols mid June-July. With exception to Zahara I think all these channels are backwards time travelling. And you’re right it takes very little time to make a video, that’s the job so just do it! Man it felt good to whinge. 😂

Sailing doodles started as a plane channel reviewing planes with their owners(Flying Doodles) since he was a professional pilot. After a couple of years he had a decent base. Then he lost his medical so he had to give up flying as a living. He has a girl now who continues the channel, yep short shorts and tight shirts but it bites. He got into boats and applied the tried and truth hot girls theme. So he has 2 really good channels that he doesn't really work hard at. Best part is that you can tell he really doesn't care. Just doing it for the money.

Ryan and Sophia were talking bad about you in person or on their channel? The solo crossing by Ryan seemed on average what you'd expect from someone who usually sails with someone, Solo sailors seem to fair better. You missed how Sailing La Vagabonde became a used high end yacht showcase, hocking two over priced catamarans that are reaching the ten year refit period, like an expensive version of "Learning the lines". The best advice I got from you was to shy away from Catamarans as the facilities in the islands for wide beam craft are expensive and can decimate your budget as parts are sometimes a pain (and fiscally painful) to get for a monohull.

I like that you counterbalance the entertainment side of sailing YT with a more realistic look at what sailing life is like. However, you seem to have more than a bit of a chip on your shoulder about sailing youtubers, and I get it…kinda. They’re all trying to tell the same story with a different cast. But that’s the whole entertainment industry. Entertainment is what most of those channels are; it’s independent reality TV like it was before it became more TV than reality. Cleary some have given up on authenticity altogether. And most people are tired of it. Fair point. But if them documenting the journey, talking about how they made it happen, and showing themselves enjoying the fruits of their labor inspires more people to get into sailing, good. The only problem I see is most aren’t primarily interested in using YT as a platform to educate or inspire and they aren’t financially transparent. It’s really just a video journal that’s all over the place but could make for 3-6hrs of quality content fit for streaming. Eventually though, it becomes mediocre footage that they dress up to be entertaining so they can leverage their viewership and sponsorships to financially support their travel plans. And people don’t stay interested. Thus views decline. However, you aren’t free from reproach either. You’ve been hypocritical in a few ways. You criticize most for “pimping out their wife” for the thumbnail algorithm here and there, yet fail to acknowledge that your buddy Sailing Good Bad & Ugly did exactly that in almost every single video in recent years. You criticize most for being dramatic or following trends like van-life, now sailing, next homesteading, yet now Sailing GBU is suddenly homesteading. But only everyone else is doing it because they’re vapid trend-chasing entertainers? C’mon man. Seems like van to boat to homestead are natural transitions for some folks and are also genres in the same vein; off-grid living. You criticize the use of manufactured drama, but in your boat shopping livestream you don’t hesitate to dramatically bash other channels or highlight the drama you’ve helped create on Facebook rather than staying consistent with what the video is supposed to be about. I can’t stand this thumbnail algorithm/buy my merch/become a patron/donate to my paypal social media hellscape we all live in, but seeing some people spreading positivity and living out their dream can be inspiring. Sure, some are merely marketing shills putting on a front of sincerity when in reality they want to crowd fund their dream life without actually producing any goods or services. But before throwing pies at everyone else’s face, wipe the frosting off of your own.

I don't think my channel has been mentioned here. Probably too insignificant or underwhelming. That being said, I've just recently watched a little of this channel. And now that I've commented let's see what comes of it.

OK, you have some interesting commentary on the state of sailing vlogs that the youtubers generally need to hear, but what I see is a fair amount of "the pot calling the kettle black". Snarky voice overs will only work for so long. There are sailing youtubers you say you like, and I like alot of them myself. You may not like philosophy and type of content that other vloggers put up, but there are many of all the types you review (adnaudsium) that stumble on producing an absolute gem from time to time. Sam Holms, who you say you like, we can take him as an example. I think Sam is just living his his adventure and he is telling how he does it, and showing us the pleasures and shit he has to deal with. He is irrepressibly optimistic, which is part of his appeal. So, an ideal for you would be to be more positive, tell us what you like about the videos you actually enjoy watching. There are alot of youtubers who need help and some of them might actually listen if you wern't so directly snarky. About a year ago, I actually met Jordan of Project Atticus while he was in the boatyard working on his boat. We talked about his latest video about working on his chainplates, and low and behold a week later he had a video based on our discussion. Which tells me is that everone who does this is probably desparate for content, but there are people like Sam Holms who have figured it out for themselves. Part of the problem is professional youtubers are always looking for eyesballs for their videos. In the grand media scheme, not even organizations with 1000's of people working towards that goal can do it reliably. There are some youtubers who are out threre just making videos that are often consitently very good, that just don't appeal to many viewers. There are youtubers who actually do follow all of your advice and they actually never break 1000 views. Far Reach Voyages is one you may have never seen. He is actually published in Practical Sailor and has a trained skill in presenting narrative which is missing from most youtube sailing videos, you should check him out.

He fixed the boat from hurricane damage, then had to fix the bulkheads. The guy wants to take a couple months off I’m fine with that. I think you’re making a big stink out of nothing. Your Contant is criticizing other KZreadrs Contant. All you do is show their video and yap in the background.

Sophia from Ryan and Sophie is just horrible. I made a simple comment on Ryan's Alantic crossing. "He's is going to have trouble leaving the dock". Sophie replied with a 2 paragraph response telling me I was why men don't communicate with women. After 30 years of marriage I don't have an issue but if your a crazy women you indeed might run into intimacy issues.

Dude you're harsh on these kids, I'm no expert but I wouldn't consider EE's 50 ft Beneteau a dumpster; Compared to a certain sailing couple we all love who bought their 37 ft Hunter "For $5000 Dollars off Craigslist" as she's looking back over her shoulder with all that cake. Kristin's a sweetheart, but so is Jade, and if you have a rocking body, why not sport a bikini? That said, I think the whole Tiny House; Off Grid; Van Life; Live aboard Sailboat lifestyle is ridiculous - they need to create drama to show how utterly awesome it is, rather than the mundane every day things we all do.

I am confused! You say you're on KZread to get others out sailing. You say that a channel needs to have a focus and critique others for switching focus and putting up drama click bait. How have the last videos helped anyone get out sailing? Your last several videos just bash other sailing channels and the thumbnails sure looks like click bait (KZread Sailors Suck). Are you better than any of the other sailing channels?

You’re good when you stay positive. When you whine about other channels you just sound like a troll. You can always get more views than everyone else when you say or do outrageous things (see presidential politics). Don’t confuse that with success. A more important question is whether you left the sailing channel environment a better place.
