Sailing Avocet | Building the COOLEST Boat Fridge!
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
80 Degrees North? More like 80 Degrees Cooler!
Despite its incredibly large size, Avocet’s fridge had some issues causing our produce to go bad quicker than it should and put an unnecessary strain on our batteries by keeping our compressor running nearly 24/7. After we began demolition and made a shocking discovery we made it our mission to build the best boat fridge, ever. Although our project plan was simple in theory, it turned out to be one of the most challenging from sourcing materials to construction itself, but luckily we were graced with the presence of Chris’s brother Jon from S/V Prism who helped us get the job done, just in time for a trip to Santa Cruz Island. Without further adieu, we present to you the COOLEST video on our channel (see what I did there?)

You guys aren't as prolific as some vloggers but I really enjoy your videos. I like the way you explain not just what you are doing (and thinking) but why. Keep them coming and I'll keep on watching.

Thanks Dana! We believe in quality over quantity, and although we would LOVE to produce more content we put a lot of time behind not only the projects but the filming and editing itself. Not to mention we both work full time and Chris is a professional cinematographer so getting him to edit for “fun” after a big shoot can sometimes be like pulling teeth 😂 we appreciate the kind words and can’t wait to share more soon
I caught the “oh glorious sanding” which is an homage to Mads from SailLife- Nicely done.

Believe me, I've been sailing more than 40 years. Your sense of humor is the most important asset aboard that boat. Everything else can be replaced. So what happens if Calif Highway Patrol stops you and finds 2-part epoxy, do you get arrested? Holy Mama.
@sailingavocet

Ha! Nothing happens, you can use it in California, you just cant buy it in California.
THANK YOU ALL for your patience as we did our best to finish this video. Chris's laptop died suddenly so we decided to upgrade to the M1 Mini and monitor that colorists use since, well, Chris needed it for work anyways. In addition to the minor computer crisis, we have also been busy working on our boat and others while managing our respective businesses to "fund the dream"... We look forward to more sailing soon, and can't wait to share some exciting news with you all! Stay tuned :)

Great job of retrofitting the refrigerator/galley area. Just found your channel a little earlier and love the professionalism of the work that Chris has used in retrofitting Avocet with Joh and your assistance Melissa. I will have to spend some time viewing all of the back videos so that I can get up-to-date.

Thank you, friends! It is amazing how some designs can be so well thought out in theory yet simple corners are cut (sometimes literally) like our fridge. As technology advances I'm sure in 40+ years we will be saying the same about today's "new" yachts!
I follow several sailing channels and this was one of the better refit vids I've seen. Nice work on the video and on the galley! Fair winds and following seas.

Grew up listening to Zeppelin! This is Chris’s late fathers shirt that has seen many a refits.
Nice work !! Motivating me to fully refit too. I just have a few questions as your excellent video has me thinking about my 1978 Pearson 35 project. What type or brand of refrigerator/freezer system was originally installed ? Does your compressor run much less now through the day ? What type of hinges are installed on the door, allowing the insulated door plug to open and close? That's some really nice craftsmanship. Again, excellent work and thank you for sharing this project !!
@sailingavocet
27 күн бұрын
Ahoy Don! We had a Seafrost air cooled compressor, but we recently upgraded to an Isotherm keel-cooled compressor and evaporator which works better here in warmer climates (Mexico). It runs a lot less now! The hinges were found in a marine consignment shop, and are just marine fridge hinges. We write about the project more here: www.svavocet.com/2021/04/28/building-a-marine-fridge/
