Fixing our Race Boat for the High Sierra Regatta
Boat projects and sailing in the SAME video? Wild. We know! Join us as we head back to the Ventura Harbor Boatyard for another round of projects, this time on our race boat, a Victory 21' previously known as "Christopher." Eight days and a lot of sanding later we had a stronger and freshly painted boat that dawned a new name ready to sail in the Annual High Sierra Regatta on our home waters: Huntington Lake, CA. This boat not only laid the foundation for our relationship but was also one of the last projects Chris and his dad worked on before he passed, making this entire rebuild THAT much more emotional and rewarding in the end. We hope you enjoy the video!
This was filmed in July of 2021 :) HUGE thank you to our neighbor Ryan for fabricating our new chainplates, Mitch and Quincey for the rigging help, and to all of our wonderful friends that sent us words of encouragement and "luck" on the race course. To our Victory 21 Fresno Yacht Club Fleet: this one is for you.
Fair Winds,
Marissa, Chris, and Cleo cat

Such a fun weekend! Geronimo was by far the best looking boat on the lake

My grandson, 15, just bought his first boat... from Scooter! A Victory 21. He has work to do, your video will be inspirational. Recognized your boat from last summer’s race, saw you rigging it. The red is beautiful and eye-catching.

So happy to hear that! Feel free to ask any questions
I've got relatives in Fresno. My uncle settled there after WWII with his French wife, started a scrap metal business. He gave me the keys to his Jag, and we went for a drive, telling me to punch it - we hit about 120mph. My parents lived in Fresno from about 1975 to about 2000. My kids & I visited for 6 weeks during the summer, skateboarding, swimming, with a car trip to Yosemite. GERONIMO! :¬) Webhead USA

thx for the trip down memory lane .... growing up my family had a dinghy very much like yours, was mainly used every summer when we went camping on Hornby Island. There were always two families there from SF and both the dads were professors in the Bay Area. Always jealous of them cause they spent the whole summer there. Anyhow the dinghy was used mainly for the sailing aspect with a rod out and was very popular except for the fact that the inside of the hull was very prickly and one had to make sure that a cushion was used .... that was my first introduction to sailing, after I graduated my parents bought a sailboat. Thx for the jaunt down memory lane . Currently live inland but getting a boat and circumnavigating is in the cards ..... YT recomended you and I've been binging your projects playlist (the order is well um challenging, backwards when one selects play all, just an fyi) sure like what you've done with your boat .... have done the suby, belly, clicky thingy ... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger ... have fun be safe, save our oceans

Hey Peter! Thank you for sharing that heartwarming story with us. We are glad this video evoked some warm memories for you - thanks for pointing out the order of that playlist! I just changed it so it should be in order now. Sorry about that! Thanks so much for following along. We hope you enjoy what's to come :)
Beautiful little boat with an awesome story and loving owners! Seeing Chris cramped up inside getting glass work done gave me flash backs of all the strange positions my boat has put me in😂 Well done guys!

Boat yoga at its finest... between that and trying to get down off the trailer there is a whole world of yoga positions you don't get with "big" boats! We love this and will continue to as long as the wind blows.
Good Job! I don't have a racing back ground so nice to hear cruising experience won the race for you!

It's a little obscure so I am glad someone appreciates it! :)
Fantastic job on Geronimo! I've seen similar chainplate bolts on Catalina 27's, with no support under the deck other than a small SS backing plate. A friend mine had one fail.

Thanks! Yeah it can be scary. Ours popped in the middle of a regatta then we had to do the tow-of-shame back to shore. Luckily we did a quick fix and were ready to race again the next day but BOY did it escalate the need to refit the boat!
Awesomeness!

Now THAT is some Top Notch work you did there once again✅ After seeing you do this kind of structural repair, it makes me wonder how on earth 🌎 they Ever got away with making it the way they did..!! 🤷🏻♂️ Looks very nice now, you two should be proud of yourselves, nice done 😎👍

Thanks Anna! Good to see you. We will have a new video up for you to watch soon... :) Stay safe out there!
Nice job; looks great! Good that you did your “chai-plates”. I kept my Victory 21 (“Too- Hip”) behind the Newport Back Bay bridge. One time stepping the mast, we forgot a forward shroud on an outgoing tide. Hit the bridge and pulled that little block of 2x4 through the deck. First time I sailsd to Avalon Catalina was in that boat; back before I knew about limits! That boat changed my life; Great little boat. Yours looks amazing.

Yep! That would be him. He missed his weather window to hop down to USVI's so standing by for the next opportunity.
The knees look like a great idea but I'm wondering why you don't place the chain plates on the outside of the hull. That way nothing would go through the deck that might leak over time.

This was a better option and added far more structural integrity. We had our rigging friend assess the decision and he gave his stamp of approval as well. There is not a way for the water to get in through the chain plates now since we rebeded them... the deck to hull joint however... lol! These boats are SUPER thin, not great in that aspect, but hell they were the first design that were the foundation of Capri/Catalina Yachts! :) If you are interested in more details about this built, check this out: www.svavocet.com/2021/07/26/christophers-geronimo/
Nice video and nice work! You've given me some idea's when my chain plates and rigging needs replacing. 16:07 "no ropes on a boat" is not technically accurate there are in fact 4 ropes on a boat! Bell rope, foot rope, tiller rope, bolt rope. The foot rope is the rope the sailors stant on when on a yard arm. Tiller rope is no and old sailing ship what now would be the steering cables on the helm. Bolt rope on the luff of the mainsail and the bell rope ding ding.

Nope. The boat our friends borrowed to race on have carbon fiber sails, some boats have bubble leaded keels, and some are rigged completely different. Our fleet is small, there’s only about 20 of us left on a good day. We don’t take it too serious, just here to have a good time
What type of boat is this? Odd looking keel
