Sailing Avocet | Catalina Rendezvous
After months of projects, we finally put the tools away to make our break for Catalina Island where we planned to rendezvous with our friends aboard SV Esprit. This was an exciting trip for us... it was our first-night passage without additional crew, we almost lost our boat in a storm, and really tested our quick thinking skills as sailors. Plus we had a lot of fun soaking up the sunshine and snorkeling for hours on end. Little did we know this would be our last sailing trip of the year before we flew east to Annapolis, then got our hands dirty in the boatyard upon our return... but more on that soon :)
Thank you all for the support!
Fair winds,
Marissa, Chris and Cleocat
P.S. It was a Marlin, not a Swordfish :)

Congrats on the overnight sail success Marissa, what a great confidence builder. I had no idea the water was so beautiful there for swimming and snorkeling, being from the east coast and never been anywhere near Catalina. Beautiful place to cruise I'd think.

Awsome tackling the night sail; it’s easier; you can use the nav lights on well marked local oceans. You know you’ve arrived as a sailor when you say “it’s too rough in here; let’s go out and heave-to”!

Most of the coastline of Catalina (and other Channel Isl.) are protected marine preserves. Kelp forest making a come back.
Did you guys drag anchor or just a ton of scope out at Emerald Bay? Looked like you had plenty of room. I saw marlins jumping from waves a few weeks ago off the coast of baja.. pretty spectacular. I've never seen swordfish in SoCal. Cool that you experienced that!
@sailingavocet
2 жыл бұрын
We didn’t drag one bit - we let out more scope to prepare for the storm and we’re totally fine. No one predicted a second storm to roll through from The OPPOSITE direction which ultimately threw us at the end of our once-comfortable-scope towards the rocks. Hey guy's, enjoying the longer episodes! Curious as to what kind of water temps you where dealing with? Noticed you had on full wet suits. B.T.W. This cracked me up 10:07.
@sailingavocet
2 жыл бұрын
glad you enjoyed it! The water was actually fairly warm at around 65+ degrees... but we wear wetsuits to protect our skin from the rocks we were diving around in case we brushed up against them.
Hey guys, is that only a mooring ball, or is there stern tying as well?
@sailingavocet
2 жыл бұрын
In Emerald bay they have a mooring field but we anchored, in Avalon there is ONLY moorings and they are bow and stern

@@sailingavocet Im Environment al science Geology trained .. theres a strong chance it wont be the last coming out of Tonga. You might want to keep deep water under your keel if your exposed to the west... I follow quite a few sailing channels. I know about Catalina Island from flyingboat history. But i rediscovered it through James from Sailing Tritiae .. he used to dive off there. .. he solo'd out to Hawaii some months ago but i saw some footage of it hitting the mainland. It was enough to spoil your day if you were in the wrong spot . On Catalina Two harbours is basicaly a low isthmus of land that waves can wash over. Unfortunately some small 🏝️ sand islands in the Tonga Fiji Samoa area got washed away... Glad your all ok... but everyones going to have to think for some time to come.
