Saidane's Vegan CHIBA Part 01 - Elmer's clear glue

A video, as a proof of concept to show that PVA based glues can be a substitute to the animal products such as gelatin, and hide and fish glues that are used in the CHIBA process.
1) For 100ml Emulsion (not final, more experiments need to be conducted):
2) 10 to 20gr Elmer's clear glue (other PVA based glues should work)
3) Add 50ml distilled water and mix
4) Add 1 to 2gr oxalic acid and mix
5) Add 5 to 10gr Ferric Ammonium Citrate and mix. If clumps form, microwave the mix for 10 to 20 secs and mix again.
6) Add 10 to 20 ml of 70% isopropyl alcohol (optional) and mix
7) Bring the level of the solution to 100m with distilled waterl.
8) Add your favorite color and mix.
Exposing:
I exposed for 5mins in my homemade UV box which is equivalent to 2 to 3 mins under the sun in my case.
Developer:
A solution of 0.3% of hydrogen peroxide.

Hi, looks like you are coagulating PVOH when you add FAC - that's why you are getting the very grainy coating. You might want to try FAO instead.

Great work and great result! Your blacks are excellent for a single coat. How much color in grams or ml do you add to the 100ml emulsion?

Thank you so much. It depends on what you are using, also if it's a pigment or tubes. I would say it can vary from 1gr up to 10 gr. I usually eyeball it, I add a bit at a time till I reach the consistency I want. I suggest mixing a smaller quantities at first and go from there. Let me know if you have other questions.

@@saidanehabib Thanks for the response Habib. Can I use Sumi ink or India ink?

India ink is great with the Safe Carbon Transfer method. For the regular CHIBA I suggest using pigments or watercolor tubes. India ink didn't mix well with gelatin and I didn't bother trying it with glue but it doesn't hurt to try and see if it works.

Amazing process, thank you. Is it possible to use citric acid instead of oxalic acid do you think?

Question about point 7): what do you add to bring the level to 100ml? More distilled water, perhaps? Best wishes from Vermont 🍁

@@TheStockwell I am just playing around. Make sure to have an acidic solution using oxalic acid. In case you don't see a picture after the use of peroxide and a couple of rinse, use warm water and help revealing the picture with a light brush or a type of shower head faucet. Good luck.
