Sagrada Família: Visualisation of the Finished Basilica

How the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain, will look once completed.

Nearly 150 years after work began, there’s still some way to go for Barcelona’s world-famous Basilica; the Sagrada Família. The plan is for development to culminate by 2026 and this impressive video - combining helicopter footage and computer animation - shows the work planned to take place by then.
Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Sagrada Família attracts around three million visitors a year with entrance fees covering most of the €25million a year bill for continuing its construction. Gifts from private donors make up the rest.
Construction work began back in 1882 before Gaudí took over the following year to radically transform the design with his distinctive Gothic and Art Nouveau style.
He was killed by a tram in 1926 and only lived to see a quarter of his masterpiece finished. The design has been led by a succession of architects since, party contributing to the long and drawn out build programme.
CAD techniques are now accelerating things, enabling stone to be carved by milling machines directly from digital information as opposed to laborious hand carving.
The B1M is the definitive video resource for building information modelling (BIM). We want to inspire a million people through our videos to help mobilise BIM adoption around the world.

this is not a masterpiece. A masterpiece is the Taj Mahal or the Sainte Chapelle. these building are elegant, honest in their conception and development. The Sagrada Familia is a cheat. Full of arrogance, but empty of humanity. Only a small part belongs to the genius of Magister Gaudi. The rest are fireworks.

Bwanamino Plis You are mistaken. The builders tasked with inheriting Gaudi’s vision are masters in their own right with impressions that would make Gaudi proud.

Actually the plans were burned at the War by the republicans, that broke the models too. So, most of the building is invented by megalomaniac architects. The result is a huge pagoda. I'm sure that if Gaudi could see this, he would have got a big depression. I think that the best to do is just stop the work. Now it is already beauty. Sorry my poor english :C

BOB.org I strongly disagree. I’ve seen uglier, sloppier, lazier, and far more inelegant cathedrals and houses of worship throughout Europe, if not the world......the added impression augmented into the Sacred Family reflects a mature interpretation of Gaudi without carbon copy replication of the original.

I'm agree with BOB.org . In this building, beauty has been tried to reach by accumulation and height. The result is a mess. I live in a city with a beautiful gothic cathedral. It was very difficult to build, but, when you see it, it is easy to interpret. When you are into the cathedral you feel quiet, in peace, happy. I'm sure that when you are into the Sacred Family you don't feel in the same way. . And, honestly, the outside is a nightmare.

I am from Belgium and went to University in Spain and lived about a kilometer from La Sagrada Familia. What most people don’t realize is that Gaudí did not use any straight lines in his architecture. I wish some of these overloaded billionaires around the world would put some of their money into finishing this unbelievable piece of art/architecture. I’m now 66 yrs old and I always hoped I would see it completed, but guess not. But thanks for this wonderful video. Before today I had only seen this in 2d. Thank You!!

Segrada Familia is a very religious building. Not just for the statues on the walls but the architecture itself... The 12 thin towers around the edges in groups of 4 represent the 12 disciples. The Larger tower at 0:12 represents Mary. The four towers close to the centre are John, Luke, Mark and Mathew. The final largest tower represents...you guessed it...the main man Jesus. Also the statues around the walls show the life of Jesus from birth to death to resurrection.

Even though it is still being built, when I visited this October of 2018 it was a transformative experience. I took two separate tours (one a guided tour from an outfit located just across the street; the second a self-guided tour where you ascended via elevator to the top of one of the huge disciple spires then walk down in a neighboring spire through a stunning spiral staircase open on the inside). The inside of the cathedral has pillars shaped like stone trees holding the ceiling up. Even if all the other elements (the last 4 disciple spires, the larger 4 apostle spires, and the largest central Jesus spire) take another 15 years to complete, a visit now is entirely worthwhile. Barcelona’s old gothic district and its famous Gaudi structures are truly a memorable experience. Good planning can also benefit from seeing human towers (castellers) as different Catalonian towns have their own teams (with towers going up 6-7 tiers high and only supported by people standing on each other’s shoulders).

I went there. The only way I can describe it is that Gaudi wanted to play with the light. The walls are white, the stones are shimmering in the ceiling many dozens of meters above you. The stained glass casts a rainbow of colors across every surface, and the walls are white as if Gaudi was playing with the light, painting with it, every moment of every day in a slightly different and unique way depending on the way the sun was positioned, the people, etc. You sit in the pews and understand how this is meant to be a holy a place. A place to see God.

Gaudi's masterpiece is the symbol of what a Man can do when he surrenders himself to God The majesty and glory of this church does not come from how frivolous or tall or ostentateous it is but from how it is actually humble .All of the glory and beauty of it is dedicated exclusively to worship the Lord of Hosts and Maker of All and His Infinite and Perfect Love . The building is not centered on itself or on its designer but on the one that made Man and saved him from Evil and that is what made Antonio Gaudi such a mega genius and designer of one of the greatest works of Art in Human History .Beauty dedicated to He who defined Beauty .Lovingly built to the One who is Love . I'm astonished about the critical comments here. I've been to the building site in 1984, 1998 and 2005 and seen the progress - and looked at Gaudí's other buildings in Barcelona. He had a very particular and unmistakable take on Art Nouveau which I find pure genius - including his approach to statics. This building is truly unique in the world. Construction is planned to be finished by 2026, 100 years after Gaudí's death. I hope they'll manage it so I can see the finished building. To be honest - if anything terrible happened to Sagrada Familia, it would hurt me infinitely more than the blaze at Notre Dame did.

I saw it in 1999. Scary stuff, walking up the spiral staircases, when you saw just how thin the walls were. One good push of a block and there's nothing between you and a long fall. Gotta have a lot of trust in the architects and builders. Anyway, see it while you can. Later generations can never see it in construction, only the finished building. The day after you visit, it will be a different building. So you can be a part of its history - and all the more so because your entrance fee helps to finance the construction, so you will always be part of the building story.

Remarkable! If you find Antoni Gaudi's seminal, idiosyncratic and thoroughly baroque style of organic architecture too busy, then remember that he didn't design every church and certainly not every building to have been built. His efforts enrich modern architectural and art history, and must enthrall both visitors to and residents of Barcelona alike.

It helps us to realize that what you have been working and striving for, so diligently and for so long to achieve, has been there all along. It's always been within you; as within the church walls. Glorious work. Nothing is placed out of reach for the created...for you are the beloved. Glorious!!!

The thing is, it's not entirely because of aging that the parts look different. Several different types of sandstone from all around the world have been used (mostly because the original sandstone source has slowly run out over time). So simply cleaning it out is useless; rather, I think that there's a kind of beauty to that variety of colour, as it shows the generational and international collaboration of the project

Tbh, the architecture is absolutely creative. Gaudi makes very awesome and fascinating architecture that is literal eye candy. The architecture on the facades and inside of the church is just... amazing. It does a very great job telling the story of the life of Christ in the facades and inside of the church. This place will be in my bucket list. I hope it'll be in yours too.

Actually, since the pandemic, plans became uncertain for the end of the construction, but the Jesus Christ tower, the central and largest tower, will be finished by 2026. The only thing that still needs to be done would be the towers of the Glory Facade, that'll take less than a decade. So yeah, 2026 is good but don't expect the whole monument to be finished. If you like Sagrada Família's unique style, you should see the Sanctuary of Montferri, made by Josep Maria Jujol, one of Gaudí's closest collaborators. It looks like a tiny Sagrada Família, and it's 100% worth visiting. Take a look at it on Google

I swear every religious related video I see there's always that one person that pisses off everybody. They chose to comment as well because they feel pride in commenting it. Thanks much for this video. As usual, Fred and the B1M team have done a Cracker Jack* job of producing this video. I have always had an interest in architecture and some of the engineering that is needed, since I was a kid back in the 1950s. I became aware of this project way back then and have been following it casually ever since. As incredible as it may seem, I was lucky enough to have had a teacher, Miss L Elizabeth Hall, in the 3rd and 4th grades who introduced us, as wee kids, to architecture as a complete study, from the (elementary) physics to design principles. She used it as a frame-work for all the subjects that a kid learned in the 3rd grade. (In the 4th grade, it was "trees" for seed to ecology to uses--a genius of a teacher.) * does anyone out there remember "Cracker Jack" as an adjective?

Han perdido el sentido de la medida y la proporcionalidad. Esto se acerca mas a Disneylandia que a un edificio religioso. Y encima, de tanto exagerar, les va a quedar hasta kitsch.

2026? BLIMEY. THEY MUST’VE RECEIVED ONE HELL OF A CASH BOOST!? Who else thinks they can actually wish AAAALL THOS WORK THAT HAS TO BE DINE BY THEN, when it’s already taken them this long to just get THIS FAR! I wish them the very best of luck.
