The arena is ready. The contestants have done all the preparation they can. The American Gladiators are primed to defend with all their might. It's an all-out battle in this episode to see which contestants move closer to the title of American Gladiators champion!
In the women's preliminary, it's Margaret McCargo, a student from East Orange, New Jersey vs. Susan Hirst, an Air Force Captain from Glendale Arizona. In the men's preliminary, it's Chris Vopatek, a bouncer from La Jolla, California vs. Purple Roundy, a personal trainer from Phoenix, Arizona.
Powerball: Contenders try to score points by depositing balls into baskets and avoid being tackled by three Gladiators.
Joust: The Gladiator and contender face off for 30 seconds on elevated platforms. They must knock each other off with pugil sticks.
Assault: The contender must attempt to hit a target while a Gladiator shoots at them using a tennis ball cannon.
The Wall: The contenders attempt to scale a rock climbing wall, being chased by Gladiators.
Human Cannonball: Two Gladiators stand on pedestals, and the contenders attempt to swing towards them and knock them off.
Atlasphere: The contenders and Gladiators battle in spherical metal cages. The contenders must stand on scoring pods while the Gladiators try to stop them.
The Eliminator: The Eliminator is an obstacle course spanning the arena, the winner of which advances to the next round of the competition.

Welcome to the official channel of American Gladiators, home of patriotic spandex and giant cotton swabs.
Beginning in 1989 for 8 seasons, this competition swept America. Two men and two women compete against each other and a roster of "American Gladiators". Events included, The Assault, Joust, The Wall, Breakthrough and Conquer, Hang Tough, Powerball, and many others, all culminating in the final event, "The Eliminator", a difficult obstacle course race. Every season there is a tournament to determine its "Grand Champion". For two seasons, there was an "International" competition taped in England where the champions from 4-6 countries competed similarly.

Larry Thompson has to be the best referee I like how he explains the rules of the power ball.

what happened to him was very sad. he herniated his disc in one of the games and physically never recovered. he was in a walker at the time of his passing

Episodes like this in the Eliminator show why they changed the rules the following year to giving the leader a head start of a few seconds depending on their lead.
Turbo and Nitro ought to be twins because they have the same longish hair.
10:07 Unusual for this camera angle. Usually, the contender is Stage Right and the Gladiator is on Stage Left, but in this position, it's vice versa.

I'm glad they changed the way they score in Atlasphere for season 3. As long as you roll over the pod it should count as a point unlike seasons 1 and 2

You're correct about the rule, but Atlasphere wasn't introduced until season two.

Man, one measly point for all that effort in Atlasphere. Looks pretty rough in the earlier stages. Glad they fixed that in the later seasons.

i'm actually watching the documentary on Netflix right now and it's crazy the amount of injuries that were on this show. Human Cannonball is just an insane thing to watch nowadays lol the hit on Malibu from season 1 is still really hard to see. dude got his head busted open

The Performance of Blaze in Powerball was amazing the Contestants made no points against her. I only didn't understand why Gold celebrated soooo much she made the mistake at 8:22 so Margaret could score 2 points....

I didn't realize that Blaze tried out for the Olympics in 1988. She was an incredible athlete

ICE is the main reason why she is one of three female American gladiators that scares the holy hell out of me! Whenever her mouth opens and her voice comes out, I always have the immense urge to just turn and run like hell!

These first two episodes in the new season show how much of a work in progress Atlasphere was at the start. Incline of the pods was too steep, area to settle in them too small. And what was up with that random hill in the middle that didn't do anything? Nope, nope, and nope. Next taping would fix all that. But still a measly 1 point a goal in the prelims. Ah well.

Another thing that only lasted for this particular taping was in the Joust, the blue contender stood on the blue platform against the Gladiator, while the red contender stood on the red platform. Afterwards, the standard contender on blue, Gladiator on red would be seen.

Also, they used to have the gladiators start within the pods and sometimes they'd have trouble getting out because they had no momentum.

Those gladiator names... like 90's beat-em-up enemies. This is actually pretty good fun. Didn't pay attention to it back then, too young to care. They couldn't do it today, they'd ruin it in some way.

i guess ill be that guy, but supermaning over the gladiators in the end shouldnt have been allowed. they arent allowed to move to the side on the rope swing, its not fair to the idea of competition to jump over them, the whole reason theyre there is to be an obstacle.
