A Painful Round Of Event Assault | American Gladiators | Full Episode | S02E04

Ойын-сауық

In the women's competition, Maria Nichting, a human services worker from Cincinnati, Ohio, goes up against Esther Ratner, an industrial design professor from Tempe, Arizona. On the men's side, Dwayne Thomas, a groundskeeper from New York City, Lincoln Simonds, a stuntman from Studio City, California, and Nate Foster, a decathlete from Laguna Beach, California compete to move to the next round.
Joust: The Gladiator and contender face off for 30 seconds on elevated platforms. They must knock each other off with pugil sticks.
The Wall: The contenders attempt to scale a rock climbing wall, being chased by Gladiators.
Assault: The contender must attempt to hit a target while a Gladiator shoots at them using a tennis ball cannon.
Human Cannonball: Two Gladiators stand on pedestals, and the contenders attempt to swing towards them and knock them off.
Powerball: Contenders try to score points by depositing balls into baskets and avoid being tackled by three Gladiators.
Atlasphere: The contenders and Gladiators battle in spherical metal cages. The contenders must stand on scoring pods while the Gladiators try to stop them.
The Eliminator: The Eliminator is an obstacle course spanning the arena, the winner of which advances to the next round of the competition.

my fave event in AG. As a kid, I used to set up an assault course in my house and my friend and I would rotate being the gun man using nerf guns. Couch cushions, tables, chairs, TVs, bean bag chairs, blankets make for a great course.

"Balance is something I need to work on, but power is something I will never lack." This works as a pick up line, a war cry, something to tell your family so that they are better equipped to emotionally handle your behavior, something to whisper threateningly into an ex-girlfriends voicemail, and as a gravestone quote.

This is probably one of my favorite episodes from this season where Diamond made her debut. It is mainly because of what happens with Nitro and Dwayne during the Assault. Once Nitro nails Dwayne in the safety goggles with one of his rounds, Larry Thompson ends the round immediately upon seeing Dwayne is wounded, Nitro looks out from behind his weapon with genuine concern, and Larry calls over the trainers to tend to Dwayne in case he needs to be taken by medics to UCLA for treatment. They all know how dangerous some of these events are, and that's why they have trainers, medics, and spotters ready and waiting should something like this happen.

The only reason that the rebooted version got to air in the first place was because there was an impending work stoppage by the Writers' Guild of America in 2007. NBC needed to fill gaps in its programming schedule caused by the cessation of production in scripted television. Thus, _American Gladiators_ was commissioned to air for this reason, coupled with the fact that the 1989-96 series was in daily reruns on the late ESPN Classic at the time.

He doesn't it's an inherit risk in Assault, since those balls are travelling at over 100mph from the cannon. The gladiator has no idea how their shots are going to travel when launched. This was just an unfortunate accident, where the contender popped out from the safety zone and a shot got launched. If i remember right, the contender's body is fair game for shots to hit anywhere, so long as the shot doesn't ricochet it counts.

What a dork. In season 1 they had contenders that were just as big as the gladiators, but the gladiators kept getting injured. Go figure. So in later seasons they made sure the contenders were more "regular joes". This also creates a nice dynamic where the gladiators are like comic book superheroes, and the contenders are pretty much like the people watching the show (or their parents). And it doesn’t matter if you beat the gladiators anyway, because you are really facing the other contender.
