Safe Primitive Prickly Pear Harvest
Opuntia (prickly pear) cactus is a genus of cacti native to the Americas. Small spines or glochids grow in small clusters on the fruits and pads. These spines readily get stuck in human skin and are very irritating especially when they get on the lips or mouth. Therefore care must be taken when harvesting prickly pears. A simple way to remove the spines is to place the harvested fruit in the hot flames of a campfire to burn off the glochids. Then the fruit can be rinsed off in water and safely cut open to eat the tasty red flesh inside.

@@ChadZuberAdventures- first you would dry the fruit, I would dice it up fresh and then allow it to dry. Next grind up the fruit into as close to a fine powder substance as you can get it. Next you will add a binder, such as linseed oil (the best option), poppy seed oil or walnut oil. You can add alkyd or try it without. Egg whites were sometimes added historically. You can experiment as to how you want and like the texture of the paint. You also use a mash from the fruit and a touch of oil mixed with warm water to make a sort of water color base. This can be sticky though. Happy painting.

Heather Feather - yes I do use a mortise and pestle, however you can use two pieces of marble or extra smooth stones. You can also use beets, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, turmeric and spinach . The colors can be muted or vibrant, depending on your binder and how much pigment you add to the mix.

Hey Chad what type of soil is needed to grow prickly pear and how does prickly pear tastes? Is it like ordinary pear?
Prickly pears are some of my favorite fruits but no matter how I do it, I have the finer hairs in every portion of my body for days. Haha... Still so worth it! Edit: I cringed so hard when you touched it...you know how those tiny hairs travel, almost as if by magic XD Edit x2: ARGH STOP TOUCHING THEM lol it's making me cringe so hard XD Editx3: ya know... i bet that would make a really great dye... It stains my fingers and clothing for awhile. Im sure you already thought of that though.

Yes, you are right, I swear they travel through the air. But I found this to be the best method thus far to reduce the risk of getting those little spines in my skin. I've had them in my mouth, lips and clothing so many times. But yes, the discomfort is worth it because they are so goooooood!

Lmao lemme put some dirt in a fire. They have different methods to achieve the same goal. If Chad needs something to carry fruit, he weaves a basket. If John needs the same thing, he fires a pot. Tbh, i like John’s pottery over Chad’s weaving, but they’re both good
Always preferred the fire method of removing glochids myself. The roasting makes the fruit taste even better I think.....
