Safariland 6390 RDS (One year later)

Ойын-сауық

Wanted to revisit the Safariland 6390 RDS a year-ish later. Still occasionally get "lock up" issues, but it has improved. The addition of the Nub mod has definitely improved the ALS button given its placement has changed a little bit. I also wanted to try and reiterate the added "height" on the 6390 as well for anyone thinking about purchasing it. If you do a lot of sitting the 6390 may work better, but the tradeoff is the possibility of it making for a more uncomfortable draw. (Again that may be just a me thing) Guys don't think I hate the 6390, it's still a solid holster.

I use both holsters for duty use, best holsters in my opinion. I just picked up another 6354 DO for a Glock 34, I started running a treaded barrel so l put a Hugo Industries plug. Good video man.

It’s kind of weird to watch videos on Safariland holsters, their numbering system is pretty stupid and confusing. They have the 6390 vs the 6354 which you would think would be a big difference but the only difference is the ride height. The 6354 RDS and the 6390 RDS are more alike than the 6354 DO and the 6354 RDS that have different hoods for the RDS and a different ALS. Meanwhile, they call the same holster for different guns the same exact thing, including for the different length guns (which I didn’t even figure out until after ordering and now if I get a comp or the longer barrel version of the same gun, I need a new holster). They should revamp the whole number/lettering system and make it easier for the consumer to figure out what they are getting.

I have a genuine love for my safariland holsters. I use a 1). 6360RDS-4502 for my sig 320 full size grip with holosun 508t, compact zev slide and PMM jttc ultra comp. And Surefire x300u-B 2). 6390RDS-2832 for my g17 style nomad9F with zev citadel gen5 slide trijicon rmr 06 and Surefire x300u turbo it has the otdefense barrel plug system in it 3). 6354DO-832 that I modified to run a g19 with a compensator and holosun hs507c with The primary arms Vulcan acss reticle. And streamlight TLR1-HL And lastly another 4). 6354-DO-832 that houses a shadow systems MR918 with trijicon rmr06 and a Surefire x300u-B Every single one is running a ghostmen designs portal. And the otdefense nub mods. BUT I TRULY suggest you try the new nub X-mod. It’s what I swear by now! Although it doesn’t work with the SLS strap. (But i remove those because I can and I don’t work for an agency so I don’t have to follow rules Set by cadre etc. All of them have the nub X now and it’s a game changer for certain!

Using 6378rds can solve the height problem. 6378rds is the "concealed carry" version of 6390rds, the only difference is the position of screw holes on the back.

I wanted to buy the 6378rds and attach the qls fork but wouldn´t it be too low? compared with the standar 6390? Is there any pictures to see the differences?

@@PETRAS_ only like 1.5 inch lower. I’m using mid ride belt loop. The back plate of my g19 is leveled with my upper edge of the belt.

I bought a glock19 with a custom cut slide, TLR-8, and Holosun 509ACSS red dot, my slide was cut for this red dot. The TLR-8 did not fit my 6354DO so I replaced it with a TLR-7. Then my Radian compensator and comp did not work with my custom slide so I bought a Killer Innovations slide. This new slide came with an RMR cut so I replaced The Holosun 509ACSS with a 507comp. Now the 507comp does not fit in my 6354DO. Long story short I never used my 6354DO and now I have a 6360RDS coming soon in my mail.

Update as of however many years later from the video. Use and beat the crap out of it for a month and it will eventually loosen up, but suffer for the time it takes to break it in. My staccato safari land was the same way and that was a new production run holster.

The 6390 seems to have an oversized locking mech or Safari is having a QC problem with it. Mind did a similar thing but it didn't let go of the gun at all unless I pulled the gun back and downwards of the holster. So I looked where the locking mech is getting worn out (was the right and front side of the locking mech that grabs the ejection port side of the slide), grabbed a file and filed it down two to three times. Now it works great even when I'm pulling the gun up before engaging the release lever.

I use my safariland 7360 and it also has binding issues. After a couple years of use, it wore in and the binding was less. I'm interested in how well the new safarivault system will work.

Have you used the 6354RDS? I haven’t seen anything on that holster but on the DO version.

Any reason why you would rather use your front sight back in that spot vs. the LeAF peq15 front sight? Also what holster of the two do you recommend for a g19 mos with acro style optic on top? Safari land said the one I was going to get wouldn’t work.

Sight is like that only cause the leafs were impossible to find and I had the kac just sitting around. As far as holster for g19 w/ big boy optic like that, Id use 6390 RDS, unless you are fine with possibly trimming then maybe 6354DO (i guess I was lucky with both my DO’s and didn’t have to do anything)

See I got lucky and did nothing other than bend one little tab over with a little heat. My friends have had to remove a little material on the front of the optic hood. Other than that nothing major unless you get some wonky holster from them (guess their QC is a little wacky right now?)

If you bought a 6390RDS for a Glock 17 with a Surefire X300u, will a Glock 19 with a Surefire X300 fit it as well?

I’m trying to understand the issue with the retention. Is he saying the holster not letting go before hitting the button is a bad thing. Isn’t that the whole point of the retention? So it doesn’t come out of the holster unless intended by hitting the button. Also the 6390RDS is designed as a mid ride holster so it would be expected to be higher than the 6354DO

  • @RedactedGear

The issue was even with the button depressed the holster would not let go of the handgun, it was getting hung up 8 out of 10 times for whatever reason. It got better over time but was very frustrating for the first couple months.
