Honestly Inquisitors getting "dissapeared by accident" is not as uncommon as one might think, heck Catachan has practically made a sport out of it.
My knee jerk reaction would say that the partitioners are living in borrowed time… but knowing the inquisition, the next guy could just as easily see that there was nothing there to be flustered over and “overlook” the business preceding his arrival.
Godwin was way too arrogant. That was one of the most unnecessary deaths ever. He could have just left and been like "that was interesting, but more harmless peasant stuff."

Corruption was inevitable, the church needed to be removed. Godwin’s failure was being too hasty and arrogant, he should have kept calm and quietly left the church so he could return with reinforcements to purge the church and it’s practitioners before it becomes heretical.

How would the death of a inquisitor acolyte save them exactly him not coming back would only make them even more paranoid and suspicious

The death of an Inquisitor won't go unnoticed,as they tend to have colleagues who know where and when they go. I would have to say these heretics are doomed.
@hawkshot867

Wait I got a very different message from this... I got the idea that this was an Imperial agent who was so ready to prosecute that he had become blind to all else. The two people who ordered his death, Aiesha and Weram, are his allies who have realized he's beyond saving. Weram was talking to him at the beginning, so is also clearly an acolyte of the same Inquisitorial warband. The Imperial Creed doesn't care HOW the Emperor is worshipped, as long as he is worshipped. A lot of religions take this and symbolize the Emperor as the sun, a season, or even a box with weird geometry. So the villain in this story was Godwin, he was blind to the fact that he was ready to massacre innocent Imperial citizens on the chance that they might be heretics someday. Like he reached the cube, and it was literally just a cube. No magic, no warp, nothing. The people being "saved" are the other agents of the warband, since Godwin is unhinged and putting them all at risk. They probably set this whole thing up with the bishop to test him.
@catwithsomeears2206
Жыл бұрын
@@hawkshot867 I can see this going both ways. The Inquisitor is definitely approaching this situation far too bull headed and it cost him. However, he is correct in the the worshipped artifact is nothing but just some mundane object *for now* and could be corrupted in the future, plus the sister is a psyker (hazy on lore if that is bad or normal). I think the best approach to this situation would have been to not go full purge mode, keep calm and play along with the show. Afterward either speak directly with the priest in private or go back to your team and weight options. There is no clear heresy now, but definitely some things that are not best practice and leave openings for heresy the future. Lay out a plan, make some adjustments and everyone is happy and heresy free or you can deal with the heretics WITHOUT the diplomatic incident. All in all, I agree that the inquisitor was too purge happy but the traces of heresy can be seen. Poor fool just wasn't inquisitive enough.
@hawkshot867
Жыл бұрын
@@catwithsomeears2206 Sure I agree for the most part. I just don't think there actually was any signs of heresy... Like the bishop explained that the box was their symbol for the Emperor, and even by Godwin's admission it was just a normal box. If worshipping icons/idols was against Imperial Creed I'd agree that they were heretics, but it isn't and they weren't... And one of the big points of Eisenhorn is that an over eager and over zealous puritan eager to prosecute good imperial citizens is arguably just as bad, if not worse, than a chaos cult. Like, the most heretical thing in this story was Godwin.
@clan741
Жыл бұрын
@@hawkshot867 I'd also say that while his death won't go unnoticed, he is still just an acolyte. the inquisition sometimes intentionally send young inquisitors like him on various missions to test if they got the right stuff to do their duty. This incident could be seen as him failing a test of patience and subtlety, or even a test of faith. With such unwavering power at their fingertips, nothing polices the inquisition more than other inquisitors. Such bloody filtering is needed to keep the ordos pure, like how the pool filtered out his unclean blood to become pure once more.

Interesting story. As far as i can tell, only the local church hierarchy was in danger because of what it was doing to the pilgrims. Since they've aranged the death of the agent, with the help of his colleagues, it's quite clear that they were deep in dangerous stuff. The Emperor's justice will make them pay, sooner or later.

No, they are not screwed, because the Ecclesiarchy is a *powerful* institution within the Imperium. The Ecclesiarchial representatives on the planet will close ranks, and can easily offer a convincing cover story for what happened to Interrogator Godwin. Remember that the Interrogator went into the cathedral alone, and out of vox contact with his retinue. It wouldn't be the first time a foolhardy Inquisitor (or Inquisitor-in-training) met a tragic and untimely demise in an ancient aedifice of the Imperium. Old buildings and catacombs can be unstable, even at the best of times, you know. The Emperor protects, but no amount of armour of contempt can protect a man from several thousand tons of crumbling masonry. Or a fall into a bottomless pit. And Inquisitors _have_ gone rogue before. Who outside of that Cathedral could refute the narrative that Godwin was lacking in faith, and was struck down by the God-Emperor for his apostasy upon coming face to face with a holy relic of one of the Emperor's saints?
Exterminatus incoming :) Plus, this would be a great setting for a long story

This is my interpretation: An inquisitorial acolyte waits hours to see a ritual firsthand, by the time he gets inside his mind is made up and no amount of proof, or lack of evidence would dissuade his conviction, hence why he took the box of bones from the shine. Recognizing that he intends to call everyone present heretics, dispite having no real proof, Aiesha and Weram (also Inquisitorial acolytes) feed Godwin to the crowd in the belief that one death now is better than the countless later.

Or... this happens all the time, and today, he was the sacrifice to the temple! but im a noob to WH so other comments certainly have much better ideas :)
I get that it’s part of the lore, but calling the Imperial faith a “cult” is a bit of a misnomer. It’s more of a religion rather than a cult. Doesn’t fit the definition of a cult.
@attemptedunkindness3632

In the height of Stalin's "Godless campaign" it was widely propagated that all faiths, the Eastern Orthodoxy in particular (because of their relative power in Russia) were merely "cults". And in an effort to prove the Soviet point, they drug their native faith down to the same level as any and all other faiths including paganism. Doing this ultimately bent the greatest faith within the Russian Empire towards the will of their self-conceived "proletariat" that was the USSR, but to and including driving the common people towards war in WW2.

I think you could make a point about it being a bunch of local cults following rather loose guidelines from the official church. @ryanf4106

thats because all religions start out as cults and a cult is nothing more than a small gathering of people who belive in the same religous ideology. based on this, the imperial relgion started out as a cult and indeed it was a cult before it became the only acceptable religion in the imperium. what their getting wrong is denomination which is probably a word that dosent exist in high or low gothic.
@No_nameOG
Жыл бұрын
@@ryanf4106 no, not all religions start as cults, there are, as I recall, six key identifiers of a cult. I don’t remember all of them, but key ones are: secret worship rites that nonbelievers are not allowed to see, a charismatic leader whose preaching can change on a whim and is expected to be followed no matter what, and the separation of families from nonbelieving family members. The Imperial cult, so-called, doesn’t fit this definition, that was my point. It’s more along the lines of the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages with its charge in rooting out heresy. Compare that to an actual cult, like Jonestown or the weird alien ones.
