The end of that soldier that was shot wasn’t even German. He was a French soldier who was helped by a German soldier to see his relative that was behind enemy line. That makes this scene so much sadder.

And the Highlander who shot him had lost his brother earlier before the truce. He was so caught up in his hatred all he saw was the uniform.

the tragic truth at the truce: Top generals absolutely REFUSED to see reason, literally swapping entire battalions after these truces, and court martialling each who took part they physically could. Another movie ending depicts a German battalion basically being sent to their deaths at the other front with Russia for partaking in this Truce. The film closes out to them singing in solidarity while their train departs. This truce truely is one-of-a-kind. Theres NEVER been such a spontanious show of humanity before or since.

The soldier was played by Danny Boon, a famous french actor who's more know for his comedic roles than dramatic role like this.

A brief moment of humanity in a tale of insanity. God bless all veterans, and may those who didn't grow old rest in peace.

A nice story after was that the soldiers on both sides who participated in the truce refused orders to shoot afterwards that and had to be transferred out.

It’s a wonderful story of how even in our darkest moments, there is still a shred of hope. That hated enemies, fed the propaganda of their nations, refused to shoot their fellow men and wept for the deaths of the “enemy”

@@luka_apic it was the war to end all wars and it was the apocalypse of an entire civilization, whole generations,cultures and communities were destroyed, genocides perpetrated,new technologies innovated and new weapons for the meat grinder invented. The tank, the battle plane, chemical warfare, snipers and many other tactics and technology made to kill everyone and anything that had a pulse, gods wrath was a preferable alternative than living through a mortar bombardment or a sarin gas attack. 103 year and we still suffer the totally negative consequences of the death of the free world.

to face a raging war you must be brave, but you must be braver to befriend the enemy knowing you will face them the next day. the toll of taking a life is heavy, but taking a friend's life is a pain you will endure for the rest of your life.

You nailed it again! This is honestly the best music video I have ever seen. It made me emotional, and that's tough to do. War is shit, dictators forcing boys and men to fight their battles, while they relax in their homes. At least there was one day where everyone put their differences aside and all got along and played football together. On Christmas Eve I will definitely pray for all the WW1 soldiers, that they are at rest. Lest we forget.

Why must you rip out my heart with that ending?

I've always known that war is hell and should be avoided at all costs, but this video and song combination has reminded me of that fact more than anything else in recent memory. I'm no hippy, but why the fuck can't we just get along?

Especially in today's mad world it's nice to look back at small episodes of humanity like this amongst misery and darkness.

I had the blessing to see Kevin Puts' opera Silent Night in Calgary, based on Christian Carion's screenplay for the 2005 film Joyeux Noël. The story of the historical short-lived spontaneous 1914 Christmas truce between enemy combatants in World War I.

That is the thing made me sad, almost crying. This song alone is a masterpiece, but with this video it is much better.

God Knight if you could not make me cry man that'd be great. The overall positive and the sudden flashes to Passchendaele at the words "violence" actually brought tears to my eyes

This truce was my favorite story i heard from the great war. Such an incredible moment in history! Great job on the video!

The Great War that truly was the waste of an entire generation. So much so that they had to send their sons and grandsons to solve what their leaders produced, not 20 years later.
