I love this music video because in the beginning you can hear the british radio report on Bismarck destroying the Hood and being pursued, and for the longest time i thought the captain was the survivor depicted in the video but no, that is the son of the last living survivor of the Bismarck that died a year before the video was released, and all the war memorabilia you can see in his cabin, when Joakim asks him about the boat, belonged to him. And the video really accurately depicts the actual events, the lucky outdated biplane torpedo hit that jammed the rudder and forced the Bismarck to stand and fight, how the bridge was hit and the officers killed and how it was finished off by ship launched torpedos. But a video that really has a billion million historical and cultural references is Rammstein's Deutschland and everytime i watch it and/or scroll the comments i find a new reference or nod to something in Germany's past.

Two historical notes: 1) some of the lyrics are the (translated) quotes from Otto von Bismarck, the German leader for whom the ship was named. 2) inside the compass that the older man was checking at the end are the longitude & latitude coordinates of where the Bismarck went down. These guys pay real attention to the history behind their songs.

I believe there were some different stuff that collided when they wrote the song. First there were some suggestions to them. They have this history channel where they also take suggestions about themes to sing about. One of them was about Bismarck and the war of the atlantic. For some years they had attended some gamecon (or something?) representing Wargaming who at that time were heavy on World of tanks. This time they asked if they had some song they could use to promote their newer game World of warships. Sabaton and especially Joakim deicided to take on the history, so the song was born and WG who at the time had a fantastic CGI department did do this. So when it was released it was put out on both Sabaton and WOWS KZread page. Since i play the game... Yeah.

Really good songs from Sabaton is "En livstid i krig" live with YT caption turned on. "Night Witches" long animated story version from yarn hub. "No bullets fly" animated story from yarn hub. But of cause I stand by my previous request Versailles - Masquerade ( m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/oJ11zsGpkbHYmJM.html ). This Japanese band just brings a unique sound to metal that I my self was trying to achieve before I found out about them.

Inside the compass that the captain of the modern boat has - the one retrieved from the Bismarck's captain by the young German sailor - are inscribed the coordinates of the final resting place of the Bismarck. Some of the song's lyrics are quotes from Otto von Bismarck himself. That shows you how much attention they paid to details in this song and video.

Despite all assertions, the Bismarck did not sink due to the enemy fire (Torpedoes and shells). She was a burning wreck, but she did not sink until the captain himself gave order to open the water-valves and causing the sinking. He did it because of the hopeless situation and the fact that Bismarck's guns were destroyed or ran out of ammo. The ship should not get into enemy hands too.

There are so many small details here that unless u dive deep into history u wont fully understand the importance of them. A few examples is the perfect depiction of what the Bismarck looked like aswell as they actually showed its battle vs the British HMS Hood at 4:30. The big gap betwinn the smoke stacks is what gives it away and was a unique feature so the ship could carry a spotter plane. At 4:53 the allies are hunting the Bismarck down as it tries to reach the French coast to receive cover from the German airforce. They even show what is historicly belived to have been the true kill shot that sealed the Bismarcks fate at 5:10. That torpedo hit destroyed the rodder on the ship causing it to sail in 1 big circle and for the next 5h British ships shelled it nonestop but it still wouldent sink. Even with British destroyers sending torpedos at it its historicly believed that the Admiral on the Bismarck desided to scuttle the ship himself by ordering various latches and doors along the hull to be opened. Its belived this becouse of how the ship reportedly sank, it for the most part sank straight down and not the typical way where 1 end of the ship raises out of the water or the ship totally flips over. The ship eventually did flip over while almost completely underwater we know this becouse the 4 main turrets are not attatched to the ship itself so at some point underwater it flipped over and the turrets came lose and the ship flipped back again before settling itself on the sea floor. They even show what is likly to be 1 of the turrets coming lose at 7:45

The Bismarck was apart of the 2 Bismarck class Battleships and the flag ship of the German Navy (Kriegsmarine). The Bismarck was launched on February 14th 1939 and was tasked with sinking merchant ships from the U.S with other German vessels such as Prinz Eugen, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. in 1941 the Bismarck left Norway by hiding in the Norwegian fjords, a Norwegian reconnaissance plane spotted the Bismarck and let the British admiralty know of the ships existence. The Bismarck left port along with the Prinz Eugen and was planned to go through the Denmark Straight however the Danish resistance notified the British navy and had 2 light cruisers shadow the Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, the British now knowing Bismarcks existence and now knows where they're going decided to intercept the 2 German ships with HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales. The Battle of the Denmark Straight lasted around 10 minutes with the royal navy taking a devastating loss, one of Bismarck's 380mm shells hit the ammunition magazine inside HMS Hood which caused a massive explosion leaving the ship to split in 2 and sink rapidly. After Sinking HMS Hood both German ships focused on HMS Prince of Wales and she started to sale in the same spot as Hood was but managed to slip away thanks to a smoke screen but not without taking heavy damage from both ships. After the sinking of HMS Hood and word got out to the British public Winston Churchill ordered every ship available to sink the Bismarck at all costs, the Royal Navy called many different ships from around the world to help sink the Bismarck, one of these was Force H which had HMS Renown, HMS Resolution, HMS Eagle and HMS Ark Royal. HMS Ark Royal was tasked to launch Swordfish Torpedo bombers to sink the German ships but after many failed attempts and almost sinking some of their own ships they managed to find the Bismarck and drop their torpedoes but most missed except 1 which damaged the rudder while the Bismarck was doing evasive manoeuvres to avoid the torpedoes which has now caused the Bismarck to go in circles and go in a spiritic path. Once the Germans realized they can't fix the rudder they radioed Berlin and said "Ship Disabled we will fight till the last shell long live the Fuhrer". Once the Royal navy caught up with the Bismarck they fired everything they had, even a Polish ship was involved in the Battle and ignored orders to stay in formation and got so close to the Bismarck they flashed the Bismarck with a message saying "I am a Pol" and started firing everything including the machine guns. After a good solid 20 minutes of shelling the Bismarck all the German ships guns were destroyed and the crew was jumping into the water, once the British navy started to run low on ammo and fuel they decided to torpedo the Bismarck and pick up any survivors before heading home. HMS Dorsetshire launched torpedoes into the Bismarck (which didn't do anything) and the Bismarck slipped under the waves thanks to the German crew scuttling him to prevent capture. out of 2,221 men who served on the Bismarck only 114 and 1 cat survived the sinking of the Bismarck. But you can also go to the Sabaton History Channel that talks about the Bismarck in much greater detail than me.

A great song and an epic video. I have been told, but not been able to get it confirmed. The german sailor being picked up from the water is the last survivor of Bismarck. He died the year before they released this video. And the skipper on the boat Sabaton is playing on is his grandson. :) I recommend you to listen to another Swedish band. Orbit Culture. There is many bands they sound like but I think that if Metalica would have started now as a band.. this might be what they would sound like. They are releasing a new EP in a few days but I recomend you to listen first to saw and work your way from that one. If you just want to hear one song.. then I would recommend “the shadowing” live studio version. You guys will love it! I guarantee. ❤️ from 🇸🇪

There's so much history in this song... Especially the first part of the video, where the battleship 'Hood' is downed (not fully historically correct, it was hit by another german ship after orders from bismarck), and then the torpedos from the planes hitting the rudder of the Bismarck making it a sitting duck. Also really good to see the acknowledgment of all soldiers who lost their lives, who are just following orders, regardless of origin. And of course... ridiculously good music :)

Bismarck was definitely at fault. It was attacked in retaliation for sinking HMS Hood. The Captain gave the order to scuttle rather than let it fall into British hands, but it is said (by experts) that it would eventually have sunk.

To this day, there is a not irrelevant amount of debate as to the cause of Bismarck's sinking. We know her crews scuttled her, and I will call Bismarck her till the end even though her captain called her male, but did the Brits actually do enough damage to actually cause it and the germans just sped it up? Or was she functionally fine, other than being unable to not go in circles which was potentially fixable if she wasn't in the middle of an active battlefield.

The swordfish pilot who seemed disappointed that his torpedo missed, turned out - he had hit the rudder crippling the Bismarck - noticing this, the Navy went after it, sinking it a Norwegian Fjord - there is also some evidence to suggest it was scuttled as well.
