The ammo storage hit was when Bismarck sank the British battlecruiser HMS Hood. It literaly detonated the entire backside. The Bismarck itself was destroyed by an entire fleet just hammering salvo after salvo into it after it's rudder was disabled by a lucky torpedo hit that forced the Bismarck to drive straight into the British fleet. It went down like a mammoth hunted by an entire tribe.

The Bismarck didn't sail into the fleet. He could still turn since the engines were still operational and he was heading for Brest. Although because they had to compensate for the jammed rudder by turning off the engines on that side, and that dropped the maximum speed down to 10 knots. The British fleet lost Bismarck but then the German admiral broke radio silence and the British headed for Bismarcks location. Bismarck, most likely, wouldn't sink after the 3 torpedoes from the British CA, if he wasn't scuttled. (Bismarck was referred to as "He" and it was one of very few ships to be called that).

@@lkvideos7181 Had the rudder not been disabled Bismarck would have made it back to port since he had more armor (44% armor mass. More than any other battleship in the world to this day), better armaments (gun caliber doesn't matter all that much when you get to those calibers. An accurate, high quality. 380mm gun can do way much more damage than an inaccurate 460mm gun, like the ones on Yamato and Musashi) and was also faster than most battleships and battlecruiser in the world at the time, being able to reach speeds exceeding 30 knots. Bismarck was already badly damaged by both canon fire from HMS PoW that caused flooding in the bow and a disabled rudder limiting speed to 10 knots. Bismarck was the tankiest ship to have ever sailed and could easily duke it out with HMS KGV and HMS Rodney (if noo cruisers are present) alone if he wasn't damaged during previous encounters with planes and ships. He was better armored than both USS Iowa class and Yamato class and had also better guns than them too.

I have a personal connection to this ship, I had a Grandfather that served as an Engineer aboard him. I have enjoyed how Sabaton has helped kids and others learn about parts of history they otherwise might not ever know. As to his sinking, My grandfather recalls helping to make sure all the scuttling charges where set and passing along the last order to the oilers and other engineering crew before he had to go to the bridge to assist in efforts to keep the ship afloat. The last order was if they lost contact for any length of time or it was apparent the ship was in danger of falling in to enemy hands the charges where to be set off. After the ship rolled many men in the water reported seeing spouts of smoke flame and debris shooting out of vents, seawater intakes and other openings as the charges where ignited by the trapped crew in the engine room. This is also now confirmed by the latest deep scans of the interior of the ship. There is a predictable pattern of damage caused by a ship that experiences explosive decompression as it sinks and water tight compartments are burst by the tuns of force exerted by the shear force of the water pressure. Bismark has nun of this. The outer hull is over 90% intact with no serious damage from the heavy pounding he received. All the damage was to the superstructure with minor hull damage aside from the stern area that collapsed when it hit the ocean floor. He was Not sunk by the British. Now this in no way takes away from the heroism and ability of the Royal Navy, there ships or the brave crews that fought in the battle. However the distinction must be made to give credit to those brave men that died doing there duty even in such horrible and frightening circumstances. To paraphrase the end of the video, All those that fought regardless of what nation deserve respect for there service and sacrifices.

That said, the guns weren’t working, the last shot fired was from the third turret and most of the commanders were likely dead by the time it was scuttled and only 400 managed to get off the ship out of 2000 giving the impression that there was probably a huge amount of damage inside the ship. If the Royal Navy didn’t sink it, they certainly disabled it. Although most accounts seem to show it lower in the water and it likely would have sunk anyway if he hadn’t been scuttled, just would have taken a lot longer. Of course, I can’t imagine how hellish it must have been to have been on the ship under such conditions. To get out of that alive was one hell of an achievement.

KMS Bismarck hit the Magazine of HMS Hood (the 'bullet chamber') sinking her in minutes at the Battle of the Denmark Strait, she was then hunted down by HMS Ark Royal, HMS Rodney, HMS King George V, and associated support vessels. Sabaton do History, every single song is a war story. The band Ex Deo do the same thing with Roman history. HMS Rodney's guns where going completely through Bismarck, as she closed, the shells entered one side of the ship, went through it totally, and exited the other side before exploding, 16in guns can do that. This video was made in association with Wargaming (the makers of World of Warships and World of Tanks. )

My Grandpa worked as an Engineering specialist for the Bloom-N-Voss ship yards and helped design some of the Fire Control systems used in Bismarck and Tirpitz. He joined the ship as an Engineering Officer a week after his christening. He still had his journal on him when he was rescued. He lived till 1965, I was born in 67 so I never got to meet him and the Journal was lost or stolen before I was born. However he translated a lot and told my Dad many stories. My favorites where the more off handed ones, like the ones about Oscar the cat, or the night they saved a Swedish Fishing boat. There where others but my point is I see points in the video and it makes some of the stories flash in my mined. For me its a little haunting but I love it because its helping to keep the History alive.

I consider Sabaton the "modern Saxon", a band who also love History, most Cruzade and Middle Age. Sabaton writes about war and epic battles and horrible chapters in our history, but they do it with class and respect for the history. They are world class story tellers and often tell stories of war from different perspectives. I learned about WWII from the German perspective with the song Hearts of Iron and Ghost Division and Wehrmacht and Rise of Evil or from the Polish perspective with the songs Uprising, 40:1, and Prisoner 4859, or from the Russian perspective with songs like Stalingrad, Panzerkampf, and Attero Dominatus. I learned about Simo Haya and Lauri Allen Tourni who were Finnish hero’s and I never knew of the Winter War before I knew Sabaton. And I have only scratched the surface of their large catalog of historical events. This band has re-ignited my love of history. The songs and stories are all there for you to learn and expand your knowledge of history. Thank God for this band!

That hit you're talking about on the Bismarck is one that hit the bridge. It killed or mortally wounded just about everyone there. There was a picture of the wreck that clearly showed the shell strike. I haven't been able to find it, but it either peeled open the top of the armored bridge or cut a path through the deck outside and either went in through the thick armored door or near it. In either case, the door was open and it was the hit the took out the ship's command. On a related note, other pictures showed that the main armor belt stopped almost every hit it took, save for one or two larger caliber hits. The armor was very effective. The British also made an error by moving in close. That caused them to do direct fire which hit either the thick armor belt or, as one source I read put it, "uselessly flayed the superstructure and the crew on deck". That means the shells were not hitting in a way that would sink the Bismarck nor get into the vitals. Had they remained at a distance they could have used plunging fire. This was the preferred tactic because the shells came down at an angle. This would allow them to potentially avoid the armor belt and hit the much thinner deck armor. This would increase the chance of a shell getting into the vitals. However, plunging fire was less accurate because of the range involved, so the the British might have closed in in a hurry to sink the Bismarck. The big explosion was the previous day on the HMS Hood. It used to be believed that a shell from Bismarck hit the torpedoes on Hood. However, a more likely theory based on where shells were actually seen to hit and their results is that a shell hit a magazine for a secondary battery on the deck. This ignited the ready ammunition and this then exploded leading to a chain reaction done into the magazines inside the armor. That one went up and probably cause other magazines to explode as well. This may have happened for the same reason several British ships blew up in the Battle of Jutland in WWI. The British favored rapid fire and to facilitate that the crews broke regulation and left blast shutters open and also stored ammunition and propellant in the places it shouldn't have been. That made the lot much more vulnerable to catastrophic chain explosions.

What you are thinking about at 8:56 was actually the shell the Bismark shot at the Battlecruiser HMS Hood, the Bismark sank the Hood by hitting her Magazine where the ammo was stored, causing a massive explosion that ripped the ship in half, causing the Hood to sink in minutes, taking all but 3 of her crew with her.

One small thing: The Bismarck is not references as a "she", but exceptionally as a "he". Sabaton took care of that oddity in the lyrics. "He was made to rule the waves across the seven seas" Sabaton have a second channel: Sabaton is all about military history. Great songs, great lyrics that are well researched. You'll have fun discovering both channels The Sabaton History Channel where they put their songs into their historical context.

In actuality, it's only refered to as he only by it's crew and captain. The others, official logs, and the führer himself still referred to it as 'Die Bismarck' which is feminine. I guess the song is from a crew perspective. Judging from the video setting and lyrics.

As others have said, the Bismarck destroyed the HMS Hood when a shell penetrated and detonated its ammunition storage (the word you're looking for is "magazine", think of the ammo storage on a firearm). You can hear this alluded to in the radio broadcast at the beginning of the music video. Bismarck himself lost his radar in that engagement when the shockwave from his own guns damaged the equipment. Later, a lucky torpedo hit from one of the Swordfish aircraft damaged and jammed Bismarck's rudder so he could no longer steer. The British fleet pounded the ship, but incredibly didn't sink him - his guns were disabled and bridge destroyed, so his own crew scuttled the ship to prevent him from falling into British hands. The old trawler captain in the music video is said to be Bernhard Hauer, the last of the ~100 German sailors who survived the sinking. Notice him holding the compass given to him by the dying officer. I'm personally not sure if the man in the video is really him or an actor. But the real man himself sadly passed away shortly after the recording of this video in 2018.

If you like History and Metal Sabaton is your band, they are an amazing band! Oficial videos or live they kick ass! Almost all their songs are about war history, some points: the drummer is the housband of Floor Jansen of Nightwish, the singer Joakim collab with Babymetal in the last álbum of them the song is called Oh Majinai! It's a pirate metal song the audio is good but live is something else one of the most fun and happy song of the new álbum please react to more Sabaton and Babymetal, great reaction btw 🤘😎🤘 one great song is Sabaton Uprising live in Woodstock (Poland) 2012 the song is about the Warsaw Uprising agains the Germán army in the WWII a very epic performance for an epic song!

In its last battle (in the atlantic together with the prince eugen) it sunk after getting shot at by over 2000 grenades(not all hit). It had the moast powerfull guns: 8 × 38 cm SK C/34(L/65) (1.004 shots) 12 × 15 cm SK C/28 (L/55) (1.288 shots) 16 × Flak 10,5 cm (L/65) (6.825 shots) 16 × 3,7 cm SK C/30 (L/83) (34.100 shots) 18 × Flak 2,0 cm L/65 (44.000 shots) The big Guns were fist bult as artelerie and heavy stationair guns but than they just got built on to the Bismarck

A few other points that I didn't see mentioned yet in the other top comments: -The scenes of the band playing really were filmed on a small trawler in the North Atlantic. They said that it was very cold and miserable, but you can't really be a power metal band & not film a video because of the weather. 8D -A small compass features heavily throughout the video. The coordinates etched onto it denote the actual location of the wreckage of Bismarck, which was found in 1989. -114 members of Bismarck's crew survived and were rescued, out of more than 2,200 on the ship. The young German sailor who is pulled from the water holding the compass given to him by Bismarck's captain is meant to represent Bernhard Heuer, the last surviving member of the crew. Likewise, the old captain who takes Sabaton out on the small boat and who still has that compass is also meant to be Heuer, although the actual Bernhard sadly died in 2018 (at the age of 95). -Others have touched on this, but the action depicted in the video is very much historically accurate. From the Fairey Swordfish bi-plane which dropped the torpedo that disabled Bismarck's rudder, to its first salvo straddling the intended target (HMS Rodney), to the numerous shell and torpedo hits suffered by Bismarck afterwards, and even down to the stricken ship listing heavily to its port side. -The song and video were released as a single, and not part of an album. This was done both to celebrate Sabaton's 20th anniversary as a band, and as a "thank you" to their fans (the Bismarck was one of the most requested song subjects by their fan base).

Since you are interested in history, a small historical fact about the Bismarck: Unlike almost every other ship who are mostly called "she" the Bismarck was called "he" by its captain, he thought that such a huge beast didn't deserve to be called a "she" because it was way too powerful to be called female. So he insisted on calling the Bismarck a "he". And as other comments already mentioned, the guys of Sabaton have their own history channel where they tell a bit about the historical event that each song is about. It is called Sabaton History. For history interested persons it is quite a must look. ^^

The old man with the compass in the video was the last man still alive of the actual Bismarck crew Bernhard Leuer. He was really given that compass by the captain who had engraved the Bismarcks last coordinates into it, so people would know where she rested. Sadly Bernhard passed away shortly after making the video in his mid 90ties.

Actually Johnny Horton's "Sink The Bismarck" was the first song about the hunt for the Bismarck, then came "You must sink the Bismarck" and now "Bismarck - Sabaton" Fun fact: Bismarck was always referred to as a he, instead of a she like ships are being called as usually. Günter Lütjens was really sexist, and so he referred Bismarck as a "he". Hitler also called it a "he", because of Lütjens calling him/her a "he". I got this information from Sabaton History, war Documentaries and some books about it. Epic reaction dude, this song is still one of my faves!

Yeah i don't remember in detail as well but i watched a documentary once, where eye-whitnesses from the allied ships got to speak. And they said that after all the fighting the Bismarck just wasn't sinking. They fired multiple shots even after the Bismarck wasn't firing anymore but it just stayed there. They said they felt pity for the ship and the crew because it felt like beating someone up who is already on the ground. Then they used their torpedos to breach the hull so it would tilt and sink like in the music video.

Little correction: Bismarck was, without a doubt, the rightful pride of the German fleet... Like his sistership Tirpitz. But at that time there were bigger ships. Japanese Yamato and his sistership Musashi. And by the way, the first and second pair of ships have almost the same fate. In any case - thanks for the adequate response to the appearance of this beautiful Bismarck ship from the sea fog.

8:45 you got confused with the Hood, one of the Bismarck's shells went into the magazine of the hood and caused the ship to explode. the actual fate of the Bismarck was when the Bismarck was turning away from the torpedo bombers one of the torpedo's hit the rudder of the Bismarck which damaged it and cause the ship to go in a constant left turn. because of this damage the Bismarck was a sitting duck and thus the British navy caught up and fired hundreds of shells at the Bismarck. only 114 crew members of the Bismarck survived, the British navy would have collected more but due to them spotting a U-Boat more than 1,000 men sank with the Bismarck.

fun fact: the bismarck wasn't critically damaged enough to sink. they scuttled her as only the 3rd turret was still serviceable. Edit: they know this because she slipped under the waves. In this video it shows her capsizing. This was because the crew allowed water in through the front of the ship.
