@Bobby Brady Yes the engine is the same as in F18 superhornet ...GE414...but I believe that most VITAL parts, which isn't Swedish, comes from UK based companies... Well most modern fighters are joint project. Here you see how much UK parts there is in F35. ukdefencejournal.org.uk/how-much-of-the-f-35-is-british-built/ You should also know that USA buys a lot of military equipment from Sweden..like the SAAB Sea Giraffe AMB radar on the latest US LCS warships. saabgroup.com/media/stories/stories-listing/2019-04/sea-giraffe-amb-a-us-success-story/ So this goes both ways even though I think Sweden and USA has the same standard of permissions when it comes to selling military equipment.

@Bobby Brady Well do anybody outside SAAB knows what exactly is inside the Gripen E? We know where the large parts are coming from. I said that the engine comes from USA = Boeing GE 414. ASEA radar and IRST joint project with Leonardo. Air frame, avionics and EW suite 100% SAAB...other parts???

@@JorgenPersson-jo4sc The engine is a modified GE414 to be more suitable for a single engine jet. So essentially made extra reliable. As for US buying non US military equipment or not depends on your point of view. Most equipment they buy are from us companies. However in many cases it is either a foreign company that has a US "sales office" registered as a US company or one of the large us military suppliers that use foreign companies as subcontractors. We live in a very integrated world, so any complex product usually has parts from many different countries. How you package and rebrand things is a business with lots of creativity. As for the Gripen fighter it can replace most parts with a similar part from another vendor as one of its strengths. Replacing the engine would be very hard unless the replacement was almost identical in size.

In Belgium we made the mistake to pay through the nose for that stealthy F35 first strike plane we need as little as Finland or Canada. Go for Gripen.

I'd love to see this in the RCAF. Great for Southern Canada with some F-15's or Super Hornets for the vast northern territory we must protect. The Saab would be built by IMP in Halifax with technical input from Montreal, perfect since Volvo Cars were once assembled in Halifax Nova Scotia Canada. We would celebrate this return the way we celebrated the return of Ikea to Halifax.

Sweden- we may be a tiny little nation between NATO. and Russia but we sure as hell can produce fighters, Draken, Viggen and Gripen. Under water a Swedish “Gotland Class” submarine actually managed to pass the task force and sneak up on the carrier “USS Ronald Reagan” and simulate a “kill” - yeah we’re annoying as hell

Not exactly closed completely. You can get there if you get exceptions and have documented negative PCR test or if you live up north and use the land passage etc. So the "closed" mostly relates to commercial flights and the large ferries that are still stranded.

The first flight with the Swedish Gripen E (designated 6002) has completed its debut flight as announced on 3rd December. The aircraft displayed a new camouflage pattern designed with three shades of grey, inspired by the Swedish Armed Forces M90 camouflage uniform. Ser ut som det nya kamoglaget ja.

I was hoping that this would be appearing at the London Ontario airshow in September but it doesn't look like it will. The F35 Demo is scheduled, and the F/A18E & F always seem to be there, but not this. That is too bad.

@@R.Hogarth It's a miracle in itself that Saab got SwAF to fly one to Finland for the airshow (this one is an early production fighter afaik). Heard they were conducting accelerated testing to integrate weapons and other systems. Who knows? Maybe they will considering Canada is another potential major customer to buy Gripen

With only two bases to operate out of the F35 is a long way from Alert and the Arctic borders. Canada is vast and To patrol our northern borders you must first fly 1000s of KM from your base to do an intercept. The cost to tanker and fly patrols compared to aircraft based in the north already is huge. Gripen is STOL f35 and F18 are not. Canada could have aircraft within minutes of an intercept not hours. There are no bases north of 60 in the arctic the Gripen can't use while there are NONE the F35 can use...Inuvik Alert, Resolute, etc all have c130's operating there already and the Gripen needs less than they do.

I hope the Canadians select this fighter. (Oh what am I thinking? Trudeau isn't going to buy any fighters. He'll spend the money on greenpeace or something)

Where is the IRST? I looked up on SAAB’s website and saw the Gripen E stationed at Malmen Air Force Base as well, no IRST. Are they still testing the IRST? I thought this was all ready. They’ve been advertising it as if it were a completely validated and tested system. Something odd is going on here.

Typical Saab PR. Much in common with Boeing. They’ll likely get it in 5 years where they’ll be unable to retrofit it to models sent to Brazil and hike the price by 40%, then call it the “Gripen Utmost Generation” or something similarly silly.

@@joonakarppinen1757 Not really comparable aircrafts to Gripen IMHO. Big, expensive to buy and operate compared to Gripen. So, If Finland sticks with currently communicated budget and Finnish air force requirement for no of aircrafts I can't see that Rafale or F-35A is a viable option. Gripen is not best att everything, but you get a lot of bang for your buck.

That's no disadvantage. Very few modern fighters use thrust vectoring as it is seen as just unnecessary and expensive complication that has no practical value.

@@traonvouez To improve turn rates over what Gripen has you must remove the pilot. Without pilot there would be a completely different set of rules and you also get lots of new technical and political and legal problems. Likely to take decades before we get there. My guess is that we first see manned jets together with drones (mules) as next generation.

Menar du på fullt allvar att en Canard-delta med en liten hornet-motor får runt nosen snabbare än ett plan med två dubbelt så starka motorer med vektoriserad dragkraft? Jag har i all uppriktighet lite svårt att tro det. Kanske i flyguppvisningar, men nog fan inte lastad med jaktrobotar. Googlar man runt lite verkar de flesta källor landa på runt 30 graders omedelbar svänghastighet och 20 graders konstant. Står inte heller hur de är lastade.

@@hk-4738 Det är skillnad på att svänga och vrida. Plan med vektor motorer tappar ju all fart och blir en enkel måltavla. Sen kan man ju fråga sig vad som gör F35 till ett gen 5 plan med en uråldrig stealth teknik från 70talet som inte går att uppdatera för att lura modern radartekning utan en total nykonstruktion. F35 kommer nog inte ens att se gripen E förren det är för sent.

Experts laughed when Saab joined rally with their 2 stroke 3 cyl 42 HP front wheel drive car too until they got left as dead on the track. Some people think about balance and small details instead of just amazing specs on a paper.

Ugly, compared to what? To me it looks like a Formula 1 Ferrari with wings. Very well balanced lines and symmetry. Only the Su-27 is prettier than the Gripen. The Eurofighter and the F-35 are the real turkeys if you ask me.

Gripen E: Now with more powerful engine, more fuel or more weapons. But not more fuel AND weapons. Still less powerful, less range and less capable than an F-16C, but twice as expensive. You have to hand it to the SAAB PR people, that's a hell of a value proposition. Welcome to 1987...

Nope. Gripen E has 40% more fuel internally than C. E also has two more pylon stations for ordnance, so it carries both more fuel AND weapons. F-16 Block 70 most recent price was 64 million $ per plane and I quite doubt Gripen E is going at 128 million - even the most espensive current new fighter F-35 is currently going at 78 million per plane on the lot 14.

@@Timodon1 Combat radius means you can go there and get back. If you can find any semi-straight road you have an airfield suitable for Gripen. So you can attack tragets much further out than the Combat radius.
