Saab Gripen The Smart Fighter | Best of Aviation Series

KZread description:
The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a Mach 2 single engine light multirole fighter which implements fly-by-wire controls and makes use of a relaxed stability design for improved maneuverability. Notable features include a delta wing with forward canards, and side air intakes. Manufactured by Saab, a Swedish aerospace company, the Gripen was designed to replace the Draken and Viggen, both successful previous Saab designs. The Gripen is designed to be easy to maintain, and have quick turnaround times between missions.

What a super proficient, deadly efficient platform. This fighter made a lot of people sit up and take heed after it's most recent Red Flag display. The Swedes would have been well aware of its potential, and actually capabilities, the allied military air-forces definitely are now. Apparently, only the Raptor out-performed the Gripens kill rate. This is a huge testimony to Swedish aeronautical expertise. Anyways, you have once more provided your audience with a very fine report and evaluation, so nothing new there! Stay safe, and good luck if you do decide to do a video on the SR 71.

  • @KernowekTim

@@Beliserius1 I wouldn't be privy to the RoE, anymore than you. But I rest assured that whatever the RoE were, none of the pilots, aircrew, or administrators were taking any part of the exercise lightly, and were trying their upmost to either evade, deceive, or kill. The respective allied nations that take part in all such exercises are friends; until they 'mount up' and perform, then it would be kill or be killed. So for me, and probably some others, Red Flag is an exercise of great strategic importance, no matter the context. Stay safe man.

@@KernowekTim RoE is absolutely important as it is determined by the purpose of the exercise. More often than not, one side has tremendous advantage with regards to RoE than the other. The purpose of Red Flag is not to evaluate each other's aircraft.

@@Beliserius1 Mate, I realise that, however, if the respective aircraft involved are not of the highest calibre, flown by top quality pilots, then the exercise would be pointless, so yeh, the aircraft are evaluated on their respective performances. The fact that the Gripen came in second only to the Raptor as an aggressor (most kills/minimum loss ratio), makes the Gripen an exceptionally fine fighting air-craft. The Gripen was taking part solely as a seek, intercept, kill and get home safe aggressor, Not a duck/dive/evade 'target' vehicle. Enjoy your day fella! Take care now.

What constitutes a successful fighter aircraft? It should cheap enough to buy so that an airforce can afford many. The operating costs should be low so that you can afford to have your pilots train frequently. When those two criteria are met, you will have an airforce with many aircraft flown by well-trained pilots. That’s a hell of an advantage.

Drew Peacock Intersting observation. I know very little about missiles so I can’t really comment. However, the Swedish defence strategy was very much ti get enough aircraft in the air when a Soviet invasion fleet was on its way, each with an missile capable of destroying naval vessels. The whole AJ-37 Viggen program was based on that assumption. The Swedish Air Force had about 400 Viggen, and if only 100 of them would have managed to fire a missile with half of them finding a target, that invasion attempt would have failed. No navy can withstand losses of tens of major warships. I think the Falklands war pretty much proved that.

Adam Marcinkowski You have a valid point. Supremacy of numbers is an issue. However, you make a really big bet that the F16 and 35 are good enough aircraft. Nobody knows (of course that goes for the Gripen too). Let’s go back to WW2 for a comparison. What if the UK had stayed with the Hurricane as a fighter and rejected the Spitfire. They could have reasoned that they shouldn’t have split resources on two models? Also, what are US guarantees worth in a post-Trump world? Do you really think that the US would hand you F16s if there is a global conflict and the US needs the F16s themselves? With the Gripen, Poland would buy from a neighbour and most likely would be able to cut a deal with the Swedes that would require production to be set up in Poland. That actually would be great for both countries!

To be truly effective, a combat aircraft must be affordable, reliable, combat effective and have the capacity to evolve over time as needs change. The Gripen appears to have all of those qualities. The Gripen's design concept allows an airforce to purchase more of an airframe it can afford to train pilots to fly effectively. Given that the Gripen is an excellent fighter/attack/recon platform this means its user can bring more combat effective planes to the fight than you could with a more expensive, less reliable aircraft. As a Canadian I hope our government shows rare common sense and selects the Gripen as its next fighter jet.

IMO, the Gripen is indeed one of the most underrated jet fighters extant. Especially the upcoming E/F variant can which has essentially 5gen electronics in a 4+gen airframe. New FBW FCS, AESA, F-35 style widescreen cockpit display, new engine & high T/W ratio (1.04:1), & what I consider to be the best datalink/avionics/EW, & all around SA capability in the world other than F-35. Of course we still have Gripen as the all time champ of low maintenance, low operating cost, plus STOL which allows the versatility needed to fly out of compromised airstrips &/or from existing roads. Gripen is also a badass kinematic performer.I have seen demos in which this lil monsta gets around some very....VERY tight corners with minimum 'squat' (bearing in mind that 'squatting the jet' can be extremely useful when coupled with extreme acceleration power. The perfect example of this is the F-35 which can literally hang motionless in midair for a second or two & then rocket away with mind numbing acceleration); the Gripen is the only jet I've seen which can make tight 9G corners as if attached to a curving rail. All in all I kinda trip a bit on why this jet is so underappreciated. I suppose it could simply be subconscious bias against the small fighter vs the big jets like F-15, Raptor, Flankers, Typhoon etc. A mistake in my opinion; if you can pack the same or similar punch in a smaller jet, the smaller one becomes quite attractive. *I would add that the Gripen appears to have a superior minimum radius turn, close to the F-35 which I've clocked in one demo at 17 seconds (I wonder if this was a slipup of sorts; I suspect that public performance demos intentionally hold a few things back). If you wind up in a rate fight, that is GONNA get you a win if you hold to the proper rate airspeed & manage energy well.

@@Kman31ca That is right but they are talking about the Gripen C. There is a problem that al pilots have in form of bleeding speed in turns and the capacity to accelerate. Gripen C has the engine far back and canards. By having the engine very far back it has less drag than any other plane I know of. It therefore looses less speed flyes faster and so on with a relative weak engine. The problrem with the Gripen C is if it has lost its speed due to intense manovering it takes more time to regain speed. An example of that was at read flag, where in a a fight the Gripens did a quick job of defeating large parts of the blue team but did not get the raptor because it turned and accelerated away. So one can say that Gripen C is underpowered but a slow bleder. This can not be said about the Gripen E it has a stronger engine and an even lover drag. Thus that problem will be history. Note that Gripen C and Rafale are the only planes that has won against raptors at Red flag. The French does only have one victory. The Raptor is without question the best fighter in the world at the moment. When Jas E goes to Red flag we will se what system is the best. My guess is that there will be a tie, mostly because the more modern elektronics in the Jas E and the even lower RCS in the Jas E compared to the Jas C. There is much to prove for the Jas E. A gues from me is that it is 10% faster and can fly 15% higher than stated. The Swedes has a tradition to undersel the capacity of the planes not to give the Russians exact information.

The Gripen reminds me of the Northrop F-20 Tigershark back in the 80s. It was a light fighter, designed to be small and deadly. Northrop said the F-20 would have a low price tag, operate from short runways, and outfight the Soviet Union’s best. The Gripen is a superb platform in the air for any Air Force today.

The only complaint could be a lack of range and combat radius and lack of weapons load but many nations don't need these attributes. Those nations that need these attributes don't need an entire fleet of such aircraft and need a good light multi-role fighter too. The Grippen is one of if not the best light multi-role fighters. Thanks- a great job on this. I was always a fan of the F-35 for Canada, but this is my new pick. A lot has to do with cost - especially operational cost per hour. I can't recall the exact figures, but it's probably around 20% of the hourly cost of the F-35. I can just see Canada buying the F-35 and then sitting them due to high cost per flight hour. I read below about super-cruise capability - which I do not believe the F-35 has. Given the on-going issues with the F-35, - including reduced airframe life estimates, helmet issues, parts availability - to name but a few - the Gripen's lower cost(s) and flexible loadouts make it a pretty enticing aircraft. My understanding is that Saab has extended an offer to build them in Canada as well. I have read that they perform well in Arctic conditions - we have lots of that. Anyway, Canada will eventually make a choice (and then have the next change in government cancel the contract - but I digress). Great aircraft.

Great video. Gripen certainly is under rated. It's the only aircraft that could survive a nuclear due to its short field capability. Also the electronics have put it past the best 4th gen fighters and up there with the 5th gen.

Since I first learned about this aircraft in the early 2000s I've been amazed by how underrated it's been. It's classified as the first 4.5Gen aircraft for a very good reason and has proved it in Red Flag operations. Sweden failed to compete with the propaganda surrounding the other 4.5 aircraft like the Typhoon, Rafael and Super Hornet.

Made parts for this once upon a time. Really modest stuff like fittings for the fuel valves. When this came out I had few reservations. Typhoons and Rafael had twin engines. This was something different. The radar was the only sticking point I had, and they've fixed it. If it weren't for the Hornet already being in service with Canada, I'd suggest they buy the Gripen. The STOL capability is something to consider over its rivals.

truth about the Hornets in Canada is that they were put into service in the early 1980s. Another truth is that spare parts are starting to dry up. We need a new fighter plane. We can buy 65 F-35s, and fly them every once in a while (@$30,000/flight hour) or we can buy 88 Gripen Es and fly them all the time (@$7,200/flight hour). Take your pick. AllFlight hour costs are in US$.

Beautiful plane! Unfortunately, in Croatia, an unnecessary and unjustified comparison with the Rafale and the F-16 Block 70, the public got the impression of weaker aircraft. Although the Swedish offer for 12 gripen is the best ..... for Croatian needs ... I think the problem is in the upgrade. C / D version is offered, not E / F.

I'm a fan of this plane for many reasons and I would love to see Canada purchase it to replace the CF-18s. It's extremely capable and as mentioned here several times, the price is right. Two huge issues, for the Canadian replacement program anyway, are that it's range is limited and it has one engine. We have a huge artic region with very little infrastructure so the fightrts have to fly a ways to get to our northern border with Russia. Likewise, the airforce has never been comfortable flying single engine fighters in the far north for the same reasons mentioned before. BUT the F-35 is also a single engine. I have a feeling the super hornet will be chosen but what do I know.

@@Tapio86 Probably using the technique the Serbians used to bring down that F117A Nighthawk (although the USAF were dumb enough to use the same flight path twice).... Targeting by triangulation must have been used. The Grippens have the most advanced multi faceted communication system. It wouldn't be difficult for a squadron to pick out loads of stealth type aircraft, each aircraft building up a complete radar image and in effect, bit torrenting the information with each other.
