Very nice that it's been solved. No one drives my SAAB unless the leave a big fat money deposit.

I really want a Saab 99. Triumph engines but more robust & overall, a car which has quirky yet sensible features like the wrap-around windscreen, transmission lock & safety tests which put other cars to shame back in the day. Nobody else had built cars with more care than Saab. I suspect what happened is that the valet attendant didn't know about the transmission lock on reverse gear as you have to put the car in reverse in order to take the key out

I owned several classic Saabs. My 99 EMS Turbo was stuck in reverse also. It's actually a common problem with the manual. Poor valet got trapped in a problem that could happen to anyone.

Didn't he explain the reverse lock to the valet??

it had a feature to lock the shifter in reverse and then remove the key from the ignition
