SAAB 96 V4 1967 with original sunroof, one of 122 built.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Saab 96 model year 1967 with its V4 four stroke Ford engine is a result of an engineering coup. Today the the three cylinder two stroke 841cc engine is by many thought of as being a very charming little engine, but by the mid 1960:ies most new car buyers considered it to be completely out of date. It was low on power, required additional oil and was "smoky", especially at cold starts.
In spite of declining sales, Saab car division manager did not approve any four stroke project.
Head of powertrain engineering then started a secret development by adapting the Saab 96 for the Ford V4 "Cologne" engine that was used in the Taunus and other Fords.
In the summer of 1966, after just a little more than half a year of secret work, the new Saab 96 V4 was launched. This increased sales of the Saab 96 a lot!
In an interview with Gunnar Ljungström (head of technical development of Saab cars from 1945 to 1969) many years after his retirement, he was asked when he felt pleased or satisfied with the development of the Saab cars. He replied; "- That was when the V4 was introduced."
The car featured here has the optional sun roof and is one of 122 Saab 96 V4 made with this option. 1967 was the last model year with the low wind- and rear screens. For model year 1968 the sun roof was discontinued.
The combination of V4 and sun roof is very rare, is there any other car in existence? Please write in the comments if some one knows the existence of any other car like this. (There are a few two strokes around with the sun roof option.)

I owned the same model but right hand drive for UK use.I purchased it second hand in 1969 with 13,000 miles on speedometer, sold it 23 years later with 270,000 miles on speedometer. I thought the world of it. I spent more money on spare parts to keep it reliable than it was worth.the later 96/95's with square headlights and rubber bumpers looked ungainly, you have the best shape car.I hope your car is as lucky for you as mine was for me.Mine was Silver Sand colour (Cream) I wish I still owned it, Go Swift. Go Safe. Go SAAB.

I have one sitting in my garage, 1967 with factory sunroof and the V4 engine. I was told my car had the 2-stroke and was rebuilt during the summer, fitting the V4 and the sunroof. It is in great need of restoration!

Hi Keith. Interesting, one of very few that has survived. Some, early I think, model year 1967 cars were indeed converted from two stroke to V4. I've been told that the "floor" under the engine was then cut open in some areas manually.

In wonderful condition. My Grandfather had the next year model the 1968 DeLuxe model with the larger front and rear windscreens still the round headlamps and mesh grille his was white with chrome trims along the bottom of the doors .The Saab 96 V4 was a hoot to drive and the sound of the V4 engine was so distinctive!

My second car was a 68 v4 with a sunroof it was painted light blue. I loved that car. Unfortunately the gearbox self destructed 1973 and I sold it to a fellow who had a business rebuilding Saab transmissions for Saab USA. I must have replaced the front muffler at least three times. It was a total pain trying to line the flanges on that vee four manifold.

Hi Robert, and Merry Christmas. Was it a sunroof of the same type as in this video or something "shorter"? To my knowledge the sunroof cars were discontinued when the higher wind and rear screens came with model year -68.

I love it..!! How many SAABs had this amazing soft-top sunroof..? I imagine they would have been popular in California…perhaps especially with the 95 Kombi and the Surf Culture there…

Hi. For model year 1967, 78 two strokes and 122 V4:s were built with this type of sunroof. -67 was the last year with this and a guess is that before that, around 200 Saabs per year were built with this optional sunroof. A V4 with sunroof is in other word a very rare thing since most of those 122 cars have not survived.

I like the yellow! Never knew about the sunroof. I have a late 1973 in verona green (unrestored, though fixed often) and I love it. I'm only the 4th owner. First owner was a Swedish family that had it for over 30 years.
