    Thank you for this video. I just replaced the passenger side headlight on my 2002 Saab 9-5 Aero. The hardest thing was removing that mass airflow sensor hose. I actually had to spray W-40 on the one side to get it off.

    Fell in love with first Saab 3 years ago.. changed bulbs on it myself, and managed to get the seized fan working on it via another you tube channel. Then the cam belt slipped killing the engine 3 weeks ago. I now have a 9-5 1.9 tid aerodeck estate 07, but have a check engine light on it ... AA says linked to Turbo... so need to get that done. Love this channel very informative. Detailed instruction gives confidence and understanding.

    Jonathan, thanks for the great tips. I found that it was easier to remove the signal lights, the screw and the two 10mm bolts that hold on the headlight assembly as opposed to the battery and mass airflow sensor and hose. One of the two 10mm bolts is accessed through the smaller grill insert for each side. Each headlight assembly has one wiring plug to disconnect. This method also avoids the need to disconnect the battery and the risk of electric shock. My operation was to replace one of the small bulbs next to the Xenon bulb which would have been nearly impossible leaving the headlight assembly in place.

    Let me start of by showering you with some well deserved praise for the collection of DIY videos on the topic of Saabs. I have only had mine for about 6 months, and although it seems like a well maintained object considering it has seen salty Norwegian roads since its completion, I have already run into what seems like 'Saab problems'; flickering HID lights, a massively malfunctioning Coolant By-Pass Valve which has seen me refill the coolant tank 8 times in two days, and no option as regards to streaming my music (except a lousy adapter) are the main ones. So far your channel has been able to help me out with each and every one of the issues at hand! These bulbs sure are expensive, but I will get right on ordering a set. Do you know if I will be able to follow this guide from start to finish even if I have the 2.2 TID engine in contrast to yours? Thanks again! Also I feel it is worth mentioning that besides these annoying issues I have run into, the 9-5 (at least '02-'05) seems like a really good and reliant vehicle! Surely a buy I will not regret and a great first impression of Saab.

    As old as this videos is, it's still golden in 2023 as all your videos are. Having changed these exact bulbs, I have to comment a few things. 1. For Swedes: there's a PAIR of these (D1S) available for 349 kr at xenonhuset. I doubt you can find anything cheaper that is new. Edit: do NOT buy these. They flicker like crazy and occasionally cause the level warning light to come on. 2. First thing that drove me insane: after the change, the cut-off that is supposed to lift when you turn on the highbeams was no longer working. After a bit of looking I found that the yellow-black cable seen in the video comes loose really easy so I had accidentally pulled it out during the change. It might be a bit of a struggle to see where it goes in and to put back, but if you look on the outside of the car and shine a light there, you will see it. 2. Another thing that drove me crazy is how short the cable attached is, at least on my 2005 9-5 wagon. The cable was so hard to get out and even harder to plug back in resulting in a light that sometimes worked sometimes didn't. This was due to the cable not being inserted all the way, which I only noticed after looking closely and comparing it to the driver-side which I hadn't replaced. 3. Make sure you get the right color temperature if only changing one. This might not annoy you but it sure annoys me. The difference between 4300 and 5000 is noticeable both by the look of the car and while driving at night. I made the mistake of forgetting to factor in color temp so I now have a 4300 and a 5000 bulb😂

    Standard low beams on the 9-5 required time to warm up. However, the different bulb on the High beams require little warm up time. Which is the reason they used different bulbs and you noticed the warm up time. The light seemed noticeably better, not in terms of brightness but in terms of area. But maybe that is the camera changing the white balance. Nice video though

  • @TrionicSeven

    The high beams are just halogen bulbs which don't really care about warmup.

  • @sniperlif3

    Trionic Seven: For Saab Enthusiasts Yeah thats what I meant. I remember hearing about it, just forgot which bulbs they used. The did that, because the halogens don't require a warmup period so you can flash the high beams. Just some information I thought was interesting.

  • @TrionicSeven

    @TrionicSeven

    8 жыл бұрын

    FYI, the xenons are also used in the high beams. Look closely at the headlight and there's a shutter mechanism that opens up when you flash the high-beams. The halogens are used to give a smoother beam.

    Howdy. Nice tutorial. I have a T7 but its a 9-5 2000. Its running LED Lights ( because keep burning out my filament lights ) and these do not glow. My question : Do I need to change Headlamp sockets to install HID kit ? because the Headlamp sockets on behind are guarded by a plastic cover. Remove the cover and you will see there is a spring holder. that attaches to behind so the bulb has to be SHORT enough so the spring hinge can close behind. My LED bulbs were longer and thicker and I currently FORCE the hinge close ( its not comfortable ) - LED 's never burn out but its very dim light for headlamp

    +Trionic Seven: For Saab Enthusiasts Yep I am using LED's for both Hi and Low's and SAAB's got the same H7 size . So LED replacement are the same H7 size and are the same type. I did this more out of desperation than fancy - in the Bay Area ( San Jose , Milpitas ) , cops move around like predatory sharks looking around for "decent" looking cars to ticket ( they wont bother ticketing those that will not pay off the tickets ! ...its a big money making gimmick ) for just about any reason and I got ticketed TWICE within 3-4 hrs, same day for dirving a cock-eyed car that came from my regular H7 getting burned out. After that I changed over to LED for both - so far NONE of them burned out ( and I am running these with one of plastic caps behind , misplaced ) but these give out candlelight intensity. You esacpe tickets but - there's no light - cant see squat.

My car when it gets colder outside, let's say below 60-55 F or I guess 10 C , the suspension creaks or makes noises, or something from the suspension, not sure what it is or what component, but only when it's colder outside. During the summer no issues. I was wondering if you experienced the same issues? Any input is greatly appreciated!(subscribed:)

About two weeks ago the light bulb would work intermittently and stopped working completely about one week ago. Same here. The bulbs are in the same position as the old ones, but usually a calibration and angle check is a good idea after replacing bulbs.

    sirlukas I assume you mean D3S. Interesting, I never noticed this before. I did have a problem with one of the bulbs failing prematurely (this was replaced within warranty at no cost for me), perhaps the reason for this failure was that I had D3s bulbs instead of D1s. I still have all the old broken bulbs and boxes and I will have to check when I come home. Thanks for noticing! :)

    +Trionic Seven: For Saab Enthusiasts Finally found a good deal on Amazon and got original Osram D1S, changed them today, and what a difference! Lovely white light and so much stronger now! Took a photo of the old ones, and they look like they were there since the beginning (MY04)! Thank you for the video, made the change a doddle! What I really struggled with was changing the side lights (or as we call it on the continent, parking lights), especially the one on the MAF side, took me an hour or so just to remove the old one! Best regards, Lukasz

    Saab 2006 aero 9-5 T. Hi maybe someone have the answer? I will replace the 2 xenon bulb (one slightly flickering occasionally) If I look to my wiss software, the osram D1S 35w should be 3200+_ 450 LM , i supposed its Kelvin? But now we can get 5000K or 6000K (more blue)! Witch xenon bulb precisely can we install there? merci from Montréal

    I think you'll need OEM Philips bulbs, but I know that the 06-10 is very very sensitive with the bulbs. I honestly don't remember right now. Ask in our community forum to be sure: facebook.com/groups/733705113501723/

    Why not remove the complete lamp from the outside, only three screws per lamp and you can easily operate the exchange the bulbs on the bench without disassembly of the air inlet system. No need for realignment of the light beam.

My passenger side lamp was the faulty on and it still will not come on, aside for checking the fuse (which I have no way of telling if it’s bad) is there anything else I can do?

    I would. The xenon system is very high voltage. You also need eye proteciton (if the high-pressure bulb shatters) and gloves.

    Great video - but cars from 2006 differ somewhat. I followed your instructions to get to the bulbs (really helpful) but it turns out the newer headlamps don't use a simple clip like in your car. It's a really awkward metal spring 'claw' that grips the bulb body on 4 sides. Getting it out is tough because there's so little room to grip it. Once out, it's tricky putting back the new bulb correctly as it has to be perfectly square on the the 'claw' and you need quite a bit of even pressure. If you get it wrong then you can bend the claws - especially on the MAF side where there's less room. If it's not correctly seated, you lose tons of light inside the reflector. I'm going to have to remove the headlight to do this properly I think. SO FRUSTRATING!!

  • @kyojitsu1

    @kyojitsu1

    I'm an idiot. I should have done more research...it turns out there's a release clip that rotates to open up the 'claw'. When you do that, it's pretty easy...doh!!

    Hello, I have an 08 that the RH bulbs seems to be just flopping around, It sounds like the same set up as yours. Do you have any photos of how these lights are installed? Thanks

  • @kyojitsu1

    @kyojitsu1

    Bill C I don't but if you follow Trionic's instructions up until accessing the bulb then the only difference is the bulb holder. There are two tabs that rotate and 'clamp' the square claw set up I described above. When you rotate them anti-clockwise it releases the clamp. Sounds like your bulb isn't pushed in and seated properly. You need to then rotate the clamp tabs to lock the bulb body in place. It's a bit fiddly but transforms the light output.

    Evan Merrick That is possible in theory, but difficult in practice. You need projector housings, level sensors, new wiring harnesses, and (hardest of them all) pass inspection. In Sweden you are not allowed to do this.

    Trionic Seven: For Saab Enthusiasts Hello Jonathan, thank you for putting this video online. I recently bought a 04 9-5 Aero and find the xenon lights dramatically less powerful than the ones in my 9-3. Not living in Sweden, I normally drive the 9-3 with my headlights turned off, reason why the are still like new. The 9-5 has 160.000 km on the counter and came from Luxembourg; reason for me to believe it may have had its lights on all the time. Due to your excellent video, I am convinced that I am going to replace the bulbs as you did. Thank you for giving me the confidence needed to do this job!
