S1 - Ep 485 - Volmoed, De Hoop, Western Cape!

After enjoying a delicious jaffle breakfast at the Petroport just outside Mossel Bay, we hit the road to Volmoed and De Hoop, purely based on what we saw on the Google satellite view while planning our route. Many of our viewers recommended stopping at Eight Bells Mountain Inn, which we did, and it was truly worth it. What a beautiful place with so much history. As we came over the hill and saw the stunning sandstone church at Volmoed, we were in awe of its beauty, even more so after walking through the building. Upon arriving in De Hoop, we were saddened to see that the beautiful church building was no longer in use, but pleased to find it still in good condition. Although we couldn't get inside, we were happy to have seen it. The decision to explore these places was a good one, and we will never forget them. #DustBugs #dustbugstravel #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape

Spectacular drone footage. You've become quite the pilot Curtis! Most impressive. The Karoo has and will always hold a certain intrigue - it has a very unique beauty to it. It is indeed so sad to see how run-down the grounds of the beautiful De Hoop sandstone church are. We can only have faith that the property will be purchased soon and restored to it's former beauty whether as a church or residence, or even as a lodge/inn or function venue. The awesome Eight Bells Mountain Inn, where I've had the pleasure of spending a few night's in the past, is indeed steeped in history and offers a memorable experience in a superb setting. Thanks for the journey.

Wonderful to see the donkey and horse interact with you! The roads you took look really quiet and peaceful and I love those blue skies with the patches of white clouds making it look like a painting! Sad indeed to see that that historic church building is no longer in use! It reminds me of what my grade 1 teacher used to tell us: "Van nuuskierigheid is die tronk vol en die kerk leeg," although that's probably not the reason this church closed down😉

Great trip this one. I love it when you stop and listen to the silence. That brings back great memories of when we did long road trips from the Transvaal to the Eastern Cape as children at Christmas. No aircon in car, leather seats, canvas water bottle hanging off front bumper. How we kids moaned.

Lovely to see you again. Often been past 8Bells but never been inside. What an interesting place. The projector made me smile. My dad had just such one of those. He was a teacher and you could get pretty good fillums 😂😂 from the education department. Every fortnight we had movie night. Us kids would get so excited. Donald Duck, Goofy, Jiminy Cricket, Laurel and Hardy, and really good movies about other countries like Thailand (Siam in those days) Namibia, Kruger national Park, wildlife, cowboys and Indians and many many more. And then the film would break, and Dad would get out the splicing machine. That oak tree is impressive! The stone church is beautiful, those old wooden pews... my back aches just looking! Its enon rock that makes the mountains red. You should really visit Red stone Hills. 100%Afrikaans, could be another Volkstaat 😅 so interesting to find Hoopvolstasie, i had a sneaky suspicion there would be a station somewhere down the line.

Hi guys two villages with hope in their names but as you said not much in one but never say never!!! Loved the banter at the garage stop are brefels in English brevels ? Eight bells was stunning with lots of history Royal Air force and the Royal Navy .unfortunately the bar was closed so you couldn't get Eight sheets to the wind ( drunk ) lol😂 love the billiards room. ( when I was in Netherlands we saw a bar with the sign billiards and said let's have a look how shocked we were to see a table about the size of a pool table with no holes the game is played with 3 balls the object of the game is to make double hits on the ball) .the stunning red roof stone church and the parsonage in the middle of nowhere you took the words right out of my mouth. As the drone showed interesting about the parsonage having 16 kids wow Loved the name of the town full of hope pop 239 100 % Afrikaans. La plume country was a surprise beautiful grounds and a bandstand plus wildlife trail .Dehoop was sad with closed church but still in good nick .the station board Hoopvol sums it up brilliant video thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one

You hit the nail on the head. The names of the two tiny towns and the station are all tied in nicely and, as they say, where there is hope, there is life! We found such unexpected joy in visiting these two places and I'm so glad we decided to visit them. 🚙💒 We had jaffles for breakfast, which are two slices of bread with some kind of filling toasted in a jaffle iron, which is made up of two heavy-duty round steel parts, heated over a flame or on a stovetop. I'm not sure if that's what you were referring to. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Thanks for coming along, as always!

What you are doing now my late husband and I did in the late 1960's. Eight bells has been in existence since 1960 s - so you are not discovering anything new.

Wow, what visionaries and pioneers you must've been back in the day! 🤩 Such a pity you belittle others' experiences, which is not our vibe at all. We share our own experiences and, just so you know, we've travelled extensively too and whether we've seen something 100 times or we're seeing it for the first time, it's new and exciting to us. Somehow I don't think our channel is the right one for you.

Go back to 1960 and keep quiet, please. We enjoy and love the experience. It is a pity I cannot swear here. Thanks a million guys for sharing with us. Some people just cannot enjoy the things others do, just ignore them. We love it to bits.
