S1 - Ep 384 - Hermanus - Rewarded with the Amazing Sight of Whales!

Our trip to Hermanus in the Western Cape of South Africa was a captivating adventure despite the chilly, rainy weather. The journey there was a scenic delight. We decided to take a drive through the picturesque Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, offering breathtaking vistas at every turn. Upon reaching the town, we embarked on a thrilling drive up the scenic route to witness Hermanus from the hilltop, revealing a truly magnificent panoramic view. Eager to witness the majestic marine life, we explored the town and were rewarded with the amazing sight of whales. Satisfying our appetites with a delicious breakfast, we later embarked on a leisurely drive to explore various points of interest in this charming coastal town. Hermanus left us enchanted with its natural beauty and coastal charm, making it a memorable and delightful experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #hermanus

    Thank you for visiting beautiful Hermanus with us. Any wildlife always make any visit so much more special and we were very lucky to see whales, dassies and a seal in a short space of time. We saw some baboons on our way out of town too, but I was too late to catch them on film. 🐳🐒 We thought the vegetation on the road up to the hilltop overlooking the town was absolutely gorgeous. 🚙🌳 I'm glad you're catching up on older videos too! 😁

    Just wanted to say thank you so much for this video of Hermanus 🐳 I recently emailed you asking about a Hermanus video, to which you replied, and now here is the video 😃 Thank you! It's definitely the best Hermanus video I have seen, as it gives the most comprehensive overview of the town. I LOVE that the town is so focused on the whales and marine and nature conservation 🐳🌊🌻I live in KZN and have never been to Hermanus but if I ever want to semi-grate, Hermanus is my place for sure 🐳🏡😊

And of course the fact that wildlife can be spotted and that the vegetation and views are spectacular, doesn't hurt one bit. 😍🐳🌳

Popped into a little curio shop there, while I was browsing the owner, an elderly lady asked me i minded looking after her shop for 20 mins while she went home to fetch something she'd forgotten so it was actually a " working holiday". 😂. Very familiar to me. We had a holiday home here for years and spent every weekend there. But that was way back. The place has become so much more developed since then. Hemel-en-aarde is so lovely in spite of the weather. I used to go up Rotary way a lot, fantastic view from the top. And really marvellous walks. Love the rainbow on entering town centre. Yes, had many an opskop there at Marine hotel. And that Cliff walk was one of my favourite walks. Nice to see you enjoying breakfast. Honestly, its the best meal to eat out. Though I usually have breakfast at around midday. I always eat the best things first before my appetite runs out. Ah the old harbour, there used to be a lot of boats pulled up there, I suppose they no longer fish as Walkerbay is very fished out. Glad to hear that foreign tourists still come out, there is such bad rap about SA overseas. Aaah! At last I heard an organ being played! Thank you! Ek waardeer dit! Aha! Ouma se ronde kerk!!! Ohmy hat!!!! My Ouma and Oupa lived in Hermanus for a long time and I used to go with Ouma to this very church!! Dominee? Yes, Dominee Alheit.. (Tannies met skerp oe en snaakse hoedens en vreemde reuke...)Yes, the stuff all around the church wasnt there before, it has been modernised. That synagogue was still a synagogue in my day.I used to go swim in Ficks pool. So lovely to see all the little creatures living there. Glad you saw some whales, and a seal too.

    Breakfast came at just the right time on that chilly and rainy Monday. 🍳🥓 If too early, I struggle. We have several friends abroad and I can't believe when they tell us they heard this and that and ask if it's true. And then it's the furthest thing from the truth imaginable. SA is not perfect, we all know that, but then the countries they reside in, aren't either. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It was awesome to see so many people enjoying the incredible local beauty and wildlife. 🇿🇦😍🐳 The Dutch Reformed Church was very unusual for us in design, but also very cool to see! 🚙💒

Hemel and arede Valley s bends and 20 wine estates views of Humanus stunning the town had a relaxing atmosphere I love going to the seaside in the cold weather. Nice to see you had a good breakfast my mouth was watering lol and watching the bird making it nest .loved the ww1 ww2 monument plus anti shipping artillery? Walker Bay unbeatable you can see 4 kinds of whales where else in the world can you see this !!!!!! .Nice stalls real holiday vibe the whale house was really interesting loved the sub .the lovely Stone church with the organ playing unbelievable great bit of luck 👍. The huge DRF church was very unusual style but stunning none the less. As always I love seeing the voortrekker monument with the tracks. The history sign board was very informative. Also at one point there was a sign with old Leaper colony intriguing 🤔 Fick pool was great especially the daarsie and the seal. The cliff path must be great if you are fit enough .and the charter boats must be amazing. Then only in South Africa a sign to tell you about the baboon troops locations witch I guess come in handy if you wanted a picnic at one of the view points lol Sonias history of the town really set the scene for me. Checking out the whales was super exciting, we just love those gentle giants! 🐳🤩 Those two anti-aircraft guns and the monuments were in great shape, which was good to see. We haven't seen hailstones in quite a while, I chuckled at you calling them English size! 🤣 I always enjoy the wildlife so much and the dassies and seal basking in the sun at Fick's Pool were very cool. They made use of the sun that stuck its head out every so often. ☀️🦡 I think we saw some baboons from the Vogelberg troop as we exited the town limits, but I was too late with my camera and didn't catch them on film. 🐒 Thanks for joining us in Hermanus! 🚙👌🏻

    Hi you two! Thank you for this fascinating trip to the Riviera of the Cape. I had a whale of a time! The views along the coastal road and from the hilltop were stunning. Even the clouds added to the beauty (to be expected at Hemel en Aarde?). I knew that Hermanus is a sought after holiday destination, but you opened up so many interesting things, from history and of late, which I never would have imagined. Whales, a seal and a dassie -- all on one walk! The synagogue surprised me and made me wonder about the Jewish part of Hermanus's history. The old RC church building is impressive. You were really blessed to have the organ playing when you went inside -- beautiful! The DRC is a work of art. I'm still hungry after watching your BIG breakfast. It's just up the road from you, so you might find some extra info useful one day, here. First Grotto Beach has a grotto - some caves near the beach, some with spring and pools. (This might even be the spring Hermanus Pieters went to). Directly adjacent is Piet Se Bos, full of mature coastal Milkwood trees, and a nice short walk. On the beach itself, there's a nice restaurant, and the beach is huge. There's a swimming beach in front of the restaurant etc, and then a lagoon (a big one, but you have to walk to see it). And then beyond there you can walk probably something like 15km on wild beaches before you get to the next bit of civilization. Then the little koppie right in the middle of town has a cave in in which they apparently found extremely early human remains, once. It's a matter of luck if it's nice or not, though. (As with the Grottos). Sometimes it's littered and smells of urine. (Similarly, the Grottos.) If you look at the rocks of the mountains round there, you can see how the strata are buckled. I don't think these are the "folds" that make the mountains of your area the Cape Fold Mountains, but it's quite incredible to think that the layers of sediment would've been all flat and horizontal initially, and now they've been bent and buckled by movement over geological time, due to things like faults. (There were some nice videos on Cape geology on KZread at one stage. Might be worth looking up. From what I remember, those mountains were once 10km high - i.e. much higher than Everest. Then over unimaginably long periods of time, they've been eroded down into the sediments that stretch something like 200 km South below the Cape. (Most of our ocean plunges pretty much straight down into deep troughs, but off the Cape there are banks of shallower waters over the remains of the huge mountains of old.) For American geology (it's Earth geology, so still interesting from an SA point of view) I can recommend the KZread channel of a professor who has a great knack for making his subject understandable and interesting to ordinary folk like ourselves, for whenever your geological curiosity gets the better of you. His name is *Shawn Willsey* , and here's a recent video of series he's thinking of starting on "Random Road Cuts" - which he walks through, "reading the rocks". It's fascinating to discover what stories there are hidden in plain sight, right before our eyes, to discover. kzread.info/dash/bejne/i5emxZqOZaq8mrQ.html Great video as usual. Nice whale sightings. One more tip for some future visit there: The cliff walk is lovely. They have security there, to keep it safe, too. Hermanus has done a pretty good job of not loving nature to death (at least as you get further from town). The coastal bush is in pretty good shape, and is being saved from the next person wanting to plonk his lump of concrete and glass right on the cliff top or edge of the sand. It's interesting to see how the wind "prunes" the trees. Also if you're getting too much wind exposure, as soon as you get in the bush, it's all peaceful. The canopy smooths the airflow, and all the leaves and spaces baffle it. It's quiet enough that you can hear all the little birds in there on a quite windy day. Amazing place.

    Thanks again for your great videos. For once I know more than you showed. Unfortunately you walked right passed the Herman’s Spring (at the refurbished deck). A visit to the ‘Train Station’ would have been a point of interest as there are no trains to Hermaus (it’s now a Info office). The story is that the trains would cause too much disturbance for the Observatory (which is open to the public on Wednesdays). Keep up the great videos!

    Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed this one too! 🚙🤩 I appreciate the extra info. I wish the spring was marked somehow, I had no idea! Another viewer told me some time ago about the station, but it completely slipped my mind while we were in town. We'll have to go and check it out sometime. 🚉

    Very interesting to learn about the history of Hermanus! We'd like to go there in Nov to try and see some whales, but I guess by then we'd need to take a boat for that.

  • @DustBugsTravel

    @DustBugsTravel

    You should try and go as early in November as possible for you, since it's the tail-end of the whale season around that time. Pun intended! 😁🐳 You should still be able to see them from the shore if they're still around, but you'll get much closer by boat.

  • @kosherchessandphotography4139

    You may have more info than I've fished out online, but it seems if they're doing boat trips all year round, with the prices from Dec to May being half of what they charge during the rest of the year. Wonder if that is because one doesn't have a whale of a chance to see one of these sea giants after Nov.@@DustBugsTravel

I bet you had a fantastic time. 🤩💒🏛️ I'm not keen on long walks since my wife, Sonia, has very serious knee issues and isn't able to join me on such outings. We're happy exploring by car and I get out at the odd place of interest. That suits our current circumstances and we actually get to see and discover quite a bit our way. 🚙👌🏻

    The R44 becomes the R43 en route to Hermanus. The turnoff to the hilltop is after the turnoff to Hemel-en-Aarde. It is the next main road which turns off to the left and is called Rotary Way. I hope this makes sense. 😁🛣️
