S1 - Ep 257 - Gordon’s Bay - A Beautiful Harbour Town in False Bay!

We always love spending time in Gordon’s Bay because as you travel through the village along Beach Road, this beautiful harbour town located on False Bay just oozes the holiday vibe. When you are in Gordon’s Bay you must visit the harbour and enjoy the wonderful food served at the Thirsty Oyster. Not to mention the views of False Bay from the mountainside which are absolutely breathtaking. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take you up to the viewpoint at Steenbras Dam because of flood damage to the road but we could show you some other views. Thank you for visiting Gordon's Bay with us! #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #capetown #westerncape #gordonsbay #tablemountain

What a pity! Steenbras is amazing. We used to visit there on one of our regular excursions. Bikini Beach was our second date together. Our first swim together. So you guys didnt take a dip then? Not even a paddle? Well, a few years ago my brother went swimming there with his family and they all came down with a horrible tummy bug. Turns out they were pumping raw sewage into the sea there. It did get stopped, though. Just wonder if anyone else had that experience. Yes, its so true, views, .and a lot of other things, get more attractive when he tummy is full. Dis lekker by die see, ne! Harbour island is a new one on me. And so beautiful. Love the art at the hotel, put me in a mind to listen to some really cruizey jazz. So here goes!

The viewpoint at Steenbras Dam was where Sonia and I enjoyed many sunsets together soon after we met, so it's a special place for us too and we so wanted it to be our first stop. But I'm already so fearful of falling rocks, so better safe than sorry! 😨 No paddle or splash for us at Bikini Beach this time around, I wouldn't have found parking if I tried! 👙 I've heard of raw sewage spillages into the ocean at various places. Sewage gets pumped into the ocean at many places, but only once it's been treated, so this may have been a spillage, but I'm not sure. 😨 I'm happy that we included two special places for you in our video. The hotel is another special spot for us because we hung out with Sonia's mom often there for lunches, so we will always have fond memories of time spent there. The artwork is a fairly recent addition and there were some pretty pieces there. I thought you might enjoy them too! 🖼️ It was a pleasure taking you to Gordon's Bay today! 🚗🏖️

There is a pub/restaurant in GB (I think it as called Talla's) that is one of only three establishments in the whole country still licensed to serve perlemoen (abalone). You haven't lived until you have tasted perlemoen. It even beats crayfish (rock lobster), although marginally.🥂🥂

I'm familiar with both, but not together! Having grown up in the Free State, I'm not really a seafood person, but have tried abalone before. I guess it's an acquired taste. Very interesting that Talla's is one of only three such restaurants in the country, I didn't know that! We've been to Talla's many times over the years and even took friends from the US there one time. They loved it too! 😁👌🏻

The wind can get quite blustery, but we hardly notice it anymore! 💨 We enjoy Bikini Beach, but as you say, parking is in short supply and especially so on the day we visited. It is a lovely beach though! 🌊 I found your comment about it being one of the safest quite interesting and looked online a little. It's awesome that Clifton, Camps Bay and Llandudno are also on the list, as is Muizenberg and Fish Hoek. Very cool! 🏊🏼‍♀️😎

@@DustBugsTravel I was just giving an opinion on the beach being safe. You don't really have any waves at GB. And you can walk a long way in. Also, except for the crabs that like your toes, you don't get anything dangerous from the sea. I think it is protected by those rocks further out. Or maybe a reef there. But not sure.

Gordon's Bay...constrasts a plenty, one of the windiest places in Cape Town and yet on a day such as today one of the calmest. Gordon's Bay Harbour is and hopefully will always be a great place to visit, Harbour Island too, the hotel an improvement, my old frequented place 😀 now adorned with fabulous art, the road scene with the dark clouds caught my eye. Has "Berties Mooring" gone ? Another firm favorite. Do you know the backstory of the S class Merc on the roof of the bookstore in GBAY? I would be interested to know? One day we might see a Kwid adorning a roof out that way too 🤣😄

  • @DustBugsTravel

We were so lucky to have just picked the perfect windless day! The locals love to say that the wind was born in Gordon's Bay! I again feel that no matter where you go on the coast, you're going to have a fair amount of wind. I for one am happy to pay that price for living on the coast! 🌊 The Krystal Beach has always been a favourite of ours, especially when we still took Sonia's mom for lunches, she loved it there so much! One Christmas lunch too in 2004, one day before the worst tsunami in recorded history. 😰 Bertie's Moorings is still going strong! The difficulty with filming so close to home was that we found folks we knew everywhere and they included clients, so I opted not to film. That oak barrel bar is really something else! The Merc rests on a building owned by an Austrian gentleman. He drove the car until he retired it and sought and obtained permission to place the shell and tyres on top of the building. Quite a cool story! 🚗 I've already identified the perfect spot for the Kwid on Beach Road in Strand! 🤣

@@DustBugsTravel You are incredibly fortunate to be able to live where you do...the other day we scoured the coastline from Pringle Bay to Strand for a swim and ended up at the Strand, it never disappoints. From what you've showcased over the past 3 episodes there's really no need for tourists and visitors to go anywhere else. I was going to suggest that you showcase the towns / villages of Kleinmond, Betty's Bay, Pringle Bay and Rooi Els more in depth as I see these places booming between now and the next 10 years. Interesting backstory re the Merc, thank-you. There are parts, close to the harbor in GBAY that are fortunately protected from the wind. The Strand does offer many options for the placement of Kwids on roofs. Can you imagine one right at the top of Hibernian Towers...a nice deep red one to constrast against the white facade.🤣🙂

  • @DustBugsTravel

    @DustBugsTravel

    Жыл бұрын

🤣 You won't have any arguments from me about the Kwiddie having to be a red one, my favourite colour! Sonia also suggested Hibernian Towers, but I said that's too high! I have a lower location in mind, you'll most certainly be on the guest list for the unveiling! 🥳🚗 I hear you loud and clear about the area from Kleinmond to Rooi-Els. The natural beauty on this stretch of coastline is still fairly untouched and I hope it can remain that way and that any influx of new residents respect nature as much as the folks who currently live there! I have all but finalised planning our routes for the rest of 2023, but perhaps we'll return to those seaside villages for an in-depth look one weekend when I'm not working, editing or sleeping. 😁 I'm so glad to hear that Strand came out on tops as your beach of choice. You can only have a good time here! 😍🏖️

The trees right on the beach sand at the beginning was also something one does not see often. The town is bigger than I thought, and quite interesting with a painted rhino down on the street, and a Merc up on the roof! It is also quite busy it seems. Sonia was lucky to find a parking space (she did, didn't she?) I missed the name of the place with with the many works of art. It is very beautiful. No cuppas there? I regret selling my house there.. The only reason I left is because of the wind there. You should check the property portals like Property 24 and Private Property and contact the relevant agents if you see a property you think may suit your requirements. That way, you can start getting a feeling for the different areas in the village. 🙂🏡

What does the S sign mean on the road ? We don’t have it in Morocco

You might be referring to the S with a line through. That sign indicates that motorists aren't allowed to stop in that area. 🚙🚫

Just a little moan, I'm not very fond of the modern architecture, slabs of concrete and glass with flat roofs. That beautiful old house you passed on the way to bikini beach with the green 💚 pitched roof and my kinda stoeps is so much nicer. It has character and mystery. Otherwise a super video of GB. Baie Dankie.

I understand completely! I like including variety on our channel and the ratio of modern to traditional buildings is far in favour of the latter. 😁 There are some stunning properties on the mountainside and they contribute to what Gordon's Bay is today, so I opted to include them. They have views to die for and I'm all about views! 🌅 Glad you enjoyed the rest of the village and its beauty! 🚗🏖️

We beg to differ. 🤷‍♂️ If the weather is great, it is fantastic to be outside and take in all the incredible beauty. If the weather is not so great, there are countless other things to busy oneself with until the weather improves. We absolutely love living in the Helderberg area of the Western Cape, wind or no wind! 🚙🌊⛰️

Safety is unfortunately a relative term in this beautiful country of ours and no-one can tell you for sure that any place is 100% safe. 🇿🇦🤷🏻‍♂️ For the most part, Gordon's Bay is considered a safe place though and many folks live, work and play very happily in this gorgeous part of the world.

gordonsbay.travel says that 'Gordon's Bay was named after Colonel Robert Jacob Gordon, Commander of the VOC garrison during the first British occupation of the Cape in 1795.' ⚓

Yup, it certainly does! 😁 Rendering just takes a little long though. I'm totally happy with the quality of 1080p on mobile devices.

Not everyone would agree with you that they're cheap. Property prices have gone up quite a bit over the past year or two. 🏡

@@DustBugsTravel yes. But at least you can get a townhouse for 600k there. I looked on property 24 a few days ago.
