S04E15 Bonnechere Provincial Park Review

This is our 3rd video in our two week, four park trip to eastern Ontario. In this video we visit Bonnechere Provincial Park near the southeast tip of Algonquin Park. This park really impressed us and we are sure to return in the future.
We had good friends and great weather on this camping trip. We hiked the McNaughton Trail, biked through the park and paddled on Round Lake and the Bonnechere River. We also went to the town of Killaloe which is famous for being the birthplace of Canda's Pastry; Beavertails. We tasted some amazing beavertails while there.
Our last stop on this 4 park tour will be Lake St. Peter Provincial Park in two weeks. Stay tuned....

Cool fact about Bonnechere....The Davenport Centre is named after Mr and Mrs Davenport who used to be the park hostesses who stayed at the campground all summer long on site #88, hence the 2 green rings on that site post. Mr Davenport also designed the fire pit that is now in all Ontario provincial parks!

The husband of one of our viewers is a Davenport. His grandparents were the camp hosts. When she found out we were going to Bonnechere she told us the story of the naming of the Davenport Centre after them. We love hearing about the background of places we go. People really have attachments to the parks.

Had been going to Bonnechere since I was 2 years old. Lots of memories throughout my childhood and into my adult years. Kinda gave up trying to get in there through covid because how popular camping became. Canoe tip.....it's a full day trip but canoe the river back up stream under hwy 58 up to the rapids. We had a big group and would take water toys and have water fights while canoeing up and stop at the rapids for lunch and then g head back for a family bbq

Yup, definitely a 2, maybe a 1.5. That's why we go back AT LEAST once a year... Other suggestions for day trips - Barry's Bay is fun to poke around, Grumblin' Grannies for all kinds of knick knacks (check out the discount GG's Annex just south of town for great deals), and a well-stocked Metro for groceries. Also Charlie D's for poutine (16 varieties!) at the edge of town. For beer lovers, Killaloe LCBO claims the coldest beer fridge in Ontario - I concur! Try it on a hot August day. Round Lake Station Food Market in Round Lake Station smokes their own bacon (buy a few pounds) has basic groceries and is a well-stocked LCBO outlet.

This is definitely one of our all-time favourite parks. When the kids were young you could let them go on their bikes and not worry due to the smaller size of the park. If you are lucky enough to get a riverside campsite the experience is ten-fold. Just outside the park, take Turners Camp road into back door entrance into Algonquin and Basin Lake Depot where there are more hikes and history. I agree on the rating of 2! Shhhhhh!

We've had those snorkels for a few years now. They're really nice as you can breath through your nose and mouth like normal rather than just through your mouth like a traditional mask and snorkel. Also when you go completely under water and come out you don't have to blow out the snorkel, you just start breathing normally again.

When it comes to black flies, dear flies and mosquitoes, we try to avoid them by staying as far south as possible for June and July. We save the near north and northern parks for August and September. I don't know specifically about bugs at Bonnechere but your best bet is August or September.

I know..wood being well...fallen trees(wood) some burnes better than others, in a few of the parks we've visited some of the parks wood was damp, did not burn very well. So do the Coles recommend parks wood or help the community with the purchase of wood by private sellers outside the park? If yes..what have been the experiences with this route? Cheers, love the videos.

We don't recommend the provincial park wood. We hear all the time how wet it is and the few times we had to buy park wood we experienced how wet it is. We almost always bring skids made of hardwood with us to burn. When we did our 7 park, 3 week trip we didn't bring skidwood for 3 weeks worth of fires so we had to buy wood along the way. We always tried to get it from a local seller near the parks and it was always good burning wood. When we bought a bundle of park wood, we mixed it with the little private wood we had left, to try to get the park wood burning.

@Camping with the Coles Thank you for the quick response! Although we have purchased the parks wood for additional support for the park and ecosystem. We more often attempt to buy local as well. Sometimes, from both parties. We are looking forward to this year's camping season. Perhaps we'll meet yous out there! Happy and safe travels. The Atkinsons.

What kind of mask/snorkel is that? Do you like it and was it easy ro learn to use? I want to try snorkelling.

We've had the full face snorkel for a few years. I forget where we got it but here is a similar one amzn.to/3FOF1Mk . They are very easy to use as you just breath normally with your nose and mouth rather than just your mouth with a traditional mask and snorkel. They're pretty inexpensive. You should give it a try!

@@CampingwiththeColes In your opinion, would a beard interfere with the mask to face seal and cause the mask to leak?

@@johnogee yeah, the beard definitely prevents a good seal. Back in the days that I used to scuba dive I would always go clean shaven to get a good seal with the mask. But just messing around at the beach when camping it's not a big deal that I have to empty it frequently.
