I use the low-crouch prone mod. So I just turn on toggle crouch and plop my ass down next to some stalker until the fire is doused and everyone peaces out

What I find so compelling and relatable about the stalkers is that, even the guy decked out in an exoskeleton and lugging around a PKM, is just a regular person, trying to make it, most likely with loved ones back home.

I'm a little bit of a scaredycat, so nights in the Zone always made me feel anxious and jumpy. It was such a huge relief to see some fellow stalkers camped out somewhere, I would always linger around their campsites a little longer than I think most other players did. Even just one guy at a little burned-out fire in the middle of a field was a welcome sight, but running into a whole group gathered around a warm orange fire, playing guitar songs inside an abandoned house was even better. That palpable sense of relief I felt is one of my favorite gaming memories. Incredible atmosphere.

Moments like this have whole new meaning when your friendly kickback camp is assaulted and you find yourself standing knee deep in the bodies of mutants and fellow stalkers, dragging the bodies away from the fire to makeshift graves that the Zone will swallow whole within weeks, and someone pulls out a guitar to play "He Was a Good Stalker" and all you can do is sip your vodka and say a lonely prayer of thanks that you were able to save SOME of your brethren.

Players are never alone. In every game and every place, there's another walking the same path you are. Either following in your footsteps or vice versa. When you enter the Agroprom underground, you know plenty of stalkers were lost to the zone there. You know there's bloodsuckers, bandits, and anomalies. But you've got your diet sausage, vodka, and and both barrels to keep you safe

And when a someone in a group of stalker's that are close friends dies for whatever reason, they might sometimes sit down by his corpse and play on their guitar and mourn. I feel pretty bad for not being able to save whoever they're grieving even if it happened before I could even see them on my PDA.

Edit in 2022: I get it. It's Ukrainian. You can stop telling me now. In fact, *please* stop telling me now. Below the cut is the comment as originally posted. I think having the spoken language as Russian makes it more interesting. It makes you feel more like an outsider, that you can't understand their conversations. You can act like you belong by keeping your head down, but you can't take part. Even so, you and the other STALKERs share a feeling that you don't find just anywhere. The feeling of a small piece of happiness, in a big world that doesn't care about you or anyone else. And even the language and cultural barriers are dissolved by a warm fire and a tune. So stay a while and listen, even if you don't understand. Because the companionship, however tenuous, can make the difference between surviving and being destroyed by your own mind.

Technically it is a group since most of the times stalkers do tend to walk in small squads, though, might end up making a bigger ones, which is why it is possible to see a group this big travelling around, though, most of time their equipment and weaponry is randomized with what rank tehy should be and etcetra, like stalkers in the rank of Master will always have exoskeletons, veterans - SEVA and experienced - "Sunrise" suit, also known as "Zarya".

I once said stalker was one of the most immersive games out there and I stand by that statement. In any other game this shit would be a scripted event along a railroad, or the characters would be there to dumb massive story exposition on you, but here? Nah mate, just a bunch of random wandering loners who decided to sit down and shoot the shit a bit, completely optional and adds almost nothing to the story.

I agree. This feature of random conversations reminds me of the primitive predecessor in Half-Life 1, where scientists would talk to eachother randomly, however, certainly not as polished as it is in Stalker.

No game has ever come close to transmitting the ambience that STALKER does, even though you aren't , you always feel alone, and it manages to make a desolate mutated landscape into something... beautiful.

I knew a stalker from the Cordon. He was the first friend I made when I snuck into the zone. We were sent to hunt for artifacts together for various traders and we did a couple oddjobs. The money was good enough for one man to buy more ammo and get more food and meds, but for a two man operation it was barely enough to buy ourselves ammo we used. But we managed to live on that wage, we always did. Eventually one day we were ambushed by a pack of psidogs. We ran and ran, eventually I noticed that he wasn’t by my side anymore and I heard a scream behind me. There he was 15 feet in the air in an anomaly, screaming for my name. I scared the pack off and ran to him, but what could I do? I did nothing and watched as my one and only friend I ever made in the Zone was torn apart by centripetal gravity as the eggheads in Yantar called it. A chunk of him hit me pretty hard in my head and I blacked out. Somehow I woke up unscathed in the bloodied field. All that’s left of Dima were scraps of clothing and shredded pieces of his m16, and a Stone Blood. It’s been 5 years. I haven’t been outside the Zone for 5 years now. I’ve collected and sold countless artifacts, but the rubles don’t fill the void for me. The vodka helps with the pain, but it doesn’t go away. Everyone asks me why I keep the same Stone Blood on me; why do I never just leave the zone with all the money I made? I guess it’s because I like to keep Dima close to me, it don’t feel right taking a part of him out of the Zone. It’s all I have left of him. Maybe it’s the Zone’s way of keeping me in here, this Stone Blood formed from Dima's flesh and bone. Ah well, such is life in the Zone. So, a toast, to Dima, may your soul fly far away from this wretched place.

The reason I find parts like in this game so calming, is because it reminds me of when I used to go camping with a bunch of other fellow Slavs, and there was that one guy who knew how to play the guitar, and we would all have fun and relax around the campfire before going to bed.

If you understand what they're talking about, you'll actually see that their speech options are pretty limited. All those jokes, when at least one listener laughs and at least one other listener makes one of "stale joke" replies. Some kind of "dreaming of outside the zone". Oh, if I had a good roast now…mmm… Of course, also usual chatter about bandits, the military, true stories and other stuff… At least all that looks more convincing than Radiant AI in Oblivion and Skyrim, for example.

Even so they got the atmosphere just right with all this shit that you are not even all that likely to witness if you're just playing to finish the game. I think it just goes to show a game can be made far greater than it might have been if you don't just focus on what the player will be forced to see, but on what he has the option to see. Just imagine, if there is ever a STALKER 2, and they actually put serious effort into the interaction options of stalkers themselves...

This is a very late comment but I just feel the need to share what this video means for me. I, for some god-forsaken reason, play this game on ironman (one life only). This game is unfair even without all of the glitches it comes with. Around every corner, within every shadow, lies potential permanent death. Every step you take, you breathe shallowly, with eyes wide open. But when you hear the distant sound of guitar, you feel you have made it one more day to safety. That is what this video means to me.

I love it when everything goes quiet. No guitar, no jokes, no muttering. Everyone just becomes silent, listening to the Zone. No one says it, but everyone knows already that you're all the same. All Stalkers that will fight and die side by side if the Zone tries to take them that night. All you hope for is to either be able to sleep or become alerted if the Zone wants to end you. Just when everyone is relaxed, they hear some poor soul screaming far out in the dark, alone. And then everyone becomes so grateful to be with fellow Stalkers. Also, some enormous, heavy balls setting up camp in the Bloodsucker Village.

I like the concept living in apocalyptic world, dark, mystery, sometimes you alone.. and in stalker game, I like to getting close to people in camp fire,, listening to songs they play, and I feel happy when sometimes they laugh, or just talking some conversation.. for that very moment, I'm no longer alone, feels like they were there for me,, even if it's just game, feels like it's real life, like I live there.. I really like to spend free times with them in bonfire for hours , just to feel the feeling of being with them The feeling of lonely in stalker world is amazes me.. The feeling to gathering with them in camp fire is amazing too

Don't compare the two, wholly different beasts. Only things alike they have is that they're hella buggy, and that just adds to the charm.

never a campfire and a guitar were so relatable

GET OUT OF HERE, STALKER but then they all stayed

when that song around 6:55 starts, along with the blowing winds, the raven screeches.. and then at just about 7:43 mark.. that unearthly sound.. distant screaming. real, unique moment in this beautifully atmospheric game.

When you're looking for some safe place to rest but instead you find A campfire surrounded by fellow stalkers and you didnt even expect it A Little bit

I don't think I've ever seen such a populated campfire.

In a joke, the controller asks the stalker for a bottle of vodka, and the stalker thinks it is a doctor. All stalkers laugh and are not happy, as in a reaction to a guitar game.

Theres just so good levels of atmosphere in the game the time your feeling tense you come across a few stalkers by a fire and you feel like at home

In a dark night, you feel very safe near the campfire with other stalker

It's such an incredible game. Nothing's like it. Still my favorite game of all time.

I really wish S.T.A.L.K.E.R was 4 player co-op, at least. Would be fun to have downtime and just sit down with some buddies around a camp fire and relax after hours of fighting to survive against beasts, avoiding anomalies, and warring with other factions. Even better would be if S.T.A.L.K.E.R had an MMO and a bunch of players from different factions all sat down and chilled together and played songs and had some fun, like a temporary truce.

I dound the joke on reddit:Doctor, I can’t sleep. I have nightmare whenever I close my eyes. I always dream I am inside the reactor and monsters are ripping me to bits. - Eh, dear… that’s a controller is trying to affect you. I would love to see something like this but its the entire night, where they all at some point go to sleep, some stay up while playing the guitar. Morning comes and they all get up one by one, playing one last song before leaving.

the memories of this game after being introduced to it after so long escpecially with graphic mods which made the game so much more enjoyable

this is the only thing that makes me feels calm after wandering around in complete darkness and what lurks behind it

I really want a button to sit next to camp fire and press key to play guitar and there would be many musics to play. And also to say congrats on that guys music he played.

You know, it only just hit me now, but I've probably fallen asleep with this playing in the background somewhere in the range of a thousand times now over the years. Well, you know what they say; a stalker can leave the Zone, but the Zone never leaves the stalker. It's an odd feeling, being homesick for a place that doesn't exist.

This kind of stuff makes the game's immersion great this game is an underrated masterpiece.

I kept expecting the bloodsucker to come maul the whole group.

To everyone asking which mod I'm using during this video: It's Complete 2009, which is a fantastic entry-level mod. A lot of of fans would recommend AMK (Which is great), but I do think this is a better mod to start with. For both SoC *and* CoP.

How to enjoy STALKER games: 1. Bring your foods and drinks 2. Stop by at nearest campfire 3. Find a vacant area and press crouch button 4. Enjoy your snacks while listening some good musics and the conversations from fellow Stalkers.
