Ryobi Generator Won't Start - Fixed

I pick this Ryobi RY905500 generator from a Craigslist Ad. It was about half the price it should have been and advertised as working. Got a call when almost there that the recoil rope broke and it would not start. The seller apologized and tried calling me off. I ended up buying it as is. He said it started a week ago. Let’s see if it works.

*100% best **Generater.Systems** I have used. A test for hurricane prep here in Louisiana: three AC units, 5000, 5000 & 8000, 3 fridges, 2 device power setups, 4 flat screens....AND I had 40% of the power meter to spare.*

This generator is definitely the most temperamental carb I have ever owned! 1 always use no E gas in this generator. 2 Run it regularly. 3 it has no fuel shutoff so maybe run it totally dry until it is needed again the next time and fill it with no E gas. Lastly, maybe pull the bottom bowl holder and fuel supplier off first, clean it, and see if it will start without a full carb disassemble. Great video!!

James, I know this vid has been around for awhile but just watched it for the first time. The ryobi hasn't been used in a couple of years but here we go again. Tropical storm/hurricane Ian is around the corner and out came the generator only to find out she wouldnt start. checked spark, fuel flow,etc.,etc. and then got frustrated, came in the house and looked for help. Your great video gave me the courage to tear down the carb. I've never been comfortable with carb work but you made it look do-able. Half an hour of work and BAM....she runs like a champ. Thanks so much. That calm demeanor and the straight forward approach to the job was just what i needed.

Ethanol gasoline (separation) caused the carburetor problem. USE NON-ETHANOL GASOLINE. I always empty the fuel tank, drain the carburetor, then run the generator until all the vapors are burned in the combustion cycle. Clean the spark plug and air filter and store the generator until it is needed again. Great video.

Ryobi got it home wouldn’t start seen your videos and took apart the carburetor. I’m very inclined and I just want to learn about everything I got my MBA, most people think people that go to school can’t work with their hands you know. I would also advise people to check the inside of the fuel tank. If the carb looks like this, there is a good chance that the inside of the fuel tank looks the same. If the tank is corroded/rusty, cleaning the carb will only be a very short-term solution. Cleaning the tank can be a chore, so make sure you are well ahead of this before the weather event etc comes if at all possible.

⚠️Here are the safety rules of using portable generators It is important to follow all generator safety rules whenever we use portable generators: Everyone must see this. This is just a reminder for everyone’s safety. 1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards. 2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. kzread.info/dash/bejne/e2WetpV6fqi0pqw.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators Hope this helps. Please make sure you follow all the generator safety tips. Remember it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Suggest adding a cheap fuel filter between the gas tank and the carb. You can order them from a marine store for water craft in like a 5 pack. Then any sediment and garbage in the tank won't clog the carb.

You have to wonder ... All that scale material, is that waste from fuel additives or even stuff they added after. How does it all get in the carb and where does it come from. Could it be something intrinsic to the area where you are located maybe ? I don't see anything like that here at my location (North Carolina US). We have different issues mainly revolving around humidity but that sludge looking scale is odd. Another thing, all that goop they sell at auto parts stores really doesn't do much if anything at all I find, its just better to use good clean gas with no ethanol if you can. Tyler Anderson Ryobi parts are available from Ryobi. Very few other companies care them. Will send you a link to the Ryobi parts site shortly. I also have another Ryobi video on the same model that had a broken fan as well as a million other things, link at the end of this comment. Unfortunately I think I lost the footage of the actual fan replacement. Had to remove the flywheel nut. In the case of this generator I think the engine was running too fast which caused the failure. You should make sure you are running at 3600 rpm. kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYibq8-KfsfAYbw.html

If you have the exact same generator RY9055000 090930295 then the part number is D264601. Just google that and you will see some options. Will post a link to the parts manual shortly. The official Ryobi site is: ryobipower.ordertree.com/

What did you pay for this used generator. I'm looking to buy one for 350.00 from someone who no longer needs it they said they only used it for 2 hours sometimes it's hard to believe.

I think I paid around $200. But these normally sell in the $300-$400 range used in good condition.
