I repair neglected power equipment. This channel was started because I found a lack of good content regarding portable generator repair and wanted to document some of the things I came across to help others dealing with similar issues. These videos are detailed and long, but would rather leave the details in to help those who are learning.

Do what I do at your own risk. Generator voltages are lethal. Small engines can cause serious injury. Gasoline is explosive and moving parts can cause serious injury. Always use power equipment outside. This is not an instructional video but meant for entertainment. I am not a trained small engine professional or certified in generator repair. No information contained in this video shall create any expressed or implied warranty or guarantee of any particular result. Any injury, damage, or loss that may result is the sole responsibility of the user.

Interesting project and all credit to you James. Thanks for making. In summary labour and parts must have exceeded the cost of a new one, broken even at best. I'm just listening to your closing words. Husqvarna make 299,- NZD saws, I have two and they start and run reliably provided they get used. My Stihl also is good and reliable. Would I buy a Chinese clone, nope never!

I had a sears version of this. On the sears there was a rubber shield that prevented stuff from being thrown at you on the right side of the head. Sort of a semi-circle. I’d recommend you add something like that or you’re going to toss gravel at yourself

You can still buy the 250 watt heat lamps like go in bathrooms. And you can buy various wattages of brooder lamps, used for keeping chickens warm. They don't make light though, just heat, so no visual indication that they are on.

James, while I agree with beautification of the generator unit I do NOT agree with swapping manufacturer related info such as a Briggs & Scrappum(taradactyl, Darrel) with a generac blower housing or vice versa that just causes problems for whoever works on the engine afterwards. I know you probably have NOT thought of this or you most likely would not be doing it. Just my 2 cents.

One reason you may have had rust show up after cleaning the fuel tank is that you used gasoline for the final rinse and that won't mix with any residual water. Any trances of water sink to the bottom and -- rust. The acitone others have mentioned does mix with water and will absorb it. Ethanol will do that as well. Or you just blow a lot of air through it to dry it faster. A replacement for now hard to get incandent lamp would be brooder (heat) lamp bulbs which have not been banned. You can find these at farm stores.

A very good good cleaner that is safe to use for exteriors and interiors is Goop. Available at auto parts and box stores. Probably Harbor Freight as well. Used it for hard to clean areas and stains on office equipment for many years. Use denatured alcohol to clean glass as it does not leave a residue.

I have bought a “bad” Honda 5500 generator once and first thing I did was check the oil and once I took the cap off it gushed out fuel and oil out of the crankcase. If you leave the on/off fuel supply to on and let it sit for a long time it’ll eventually leak past the carb into your cylinder then into your crankcase overfilling it. So I drained everything out took the carb off and it was gunked up assuming from the ethanol and cleaned and sealed it all back up. Changed the spark plug and filled it all back up with fresh non ethanol fuel and oil. Took about 8 pulls then started up with a low idle and smoked like yours did for about the same amount of time and smoke cleared and idle ran smoother.

This Homelite Generator was probably for a Contractor. They were much too expensive for homeowners to keep in the 1950's. It's interesting to think about how many job sites used this gen for lighting and tools while they completed building projects.

Recently refurbishing one of these saws, I suspected the intake boot was the issue. Good job. Most Germans must be left handed, cause I cant figure out why they put the foot pad on the wrong side of the saws, for pulling the cord with your right hand.

  • @jcondon1

Check this one out. It runs on battery. All you do is attach it to the machine. The wire is just wrapped around the spark plug wire 5-7 turns and it will count the hours and show you the engine speed: a.co/d/00f7wmlq

If a measure of other frequencies in the output beside the primary. So the primary output on this generator is 60 hertz. At 25% THD it means that 25% of the power is at other frequencies like 120 hertz which is waisted power and not usable so it’s dissipated at heat. That extra heat can damage some things plugged into the generator.

Hi, related to the very last problem you addressed at 01:17:30 _ _I can suggest an idea for you to try. Get a good working modern AVR board, that is still available in good amount quantities and peel it's insulation off, until you can reverse engineer that. And after that, after you understand the circuit and the principle of operation, you can apply it for your older AVR board, re-making it from scratch to fit the specifications. Its how I will do it . Hope it helps. Also at 53:10 , I would have remade that component from aluminium or a block of plastic. Your method is good as well, but to be sure it will be no future problems, I would have re-make it. Its a very subjective idea of course. Great work nevertheless.

I don't recall the brand of tank liner I used for a gas can probably 8-10 years ago. It took a long time to cure, so I placed it in full sun which added enough safe heat to fully cure the product. It was a hot day with full sun. I still use the gas can....no leaks.
