My son is on the spectrum and has similar quirks as Ryan. You look at him and he flinches uncontrollably, because he can't help it, but his mind NEVER stops working. Really cool to see similar views being so unique. Everytime I play a logical game with my son he sees something from an angle I could never imagine, it's amazing. Ryan puts this towards grappling and it is so revealing to the sport. We need such people, intellectual with an ability that others would find difficult to replicate really grows the sport.

As a Muslim I like Ryan’s thought process on free will. We believe in a combination of both. We believe that actions are based on INTENTIONS. Intentions are a very important word in Islam and they are everything. Your intentions are your free will. You are responsible for fixing them on a daily basis 24/7. The free-will of other people is beyond my control, hence they are fate from my perspective. Therefore, we live in a world where intentions clash together. Your intentions are your free-will. If it rains today, That is fate because I had no intention in making it rain. I can go outside in the rain or I can stay at home. As long as I am aware that I made that decision it’s free will. If I was sleep walking and found myself in the rain, then it’s fate because I had no intention to go outside. I am free to intend to do something. But I am not necessarily free to determine the outcome. I can perform the same action, one being free-will and the other being predetermined fate based on the intention. I can accidentally run over someone on the street with my car. That’s fate. I can also intentionally run over someone on the street with my car. That’s free will. So free-will is pretty much based on your intention and most of the time only God can see your true intentions. The day of judgement is the day when God judges our actions (intentions). The

What he's saying is similar to what a master once told me: when one's mind has grasped the essence of martial art then he may fight with no mind and win. I mean when you understand something on a fundamental level like boxing (position and simple repeated punching) then it doesn't matter if you're a slugger, swarmer, southpaw and etc. You can use anything without being too predictable

On the free will point as it relates to responsibility and society: Sam might say that we dont assign responsibility to earthquakes or bears and yet we can take action to prevent and contain the damage they cause. Similarly we can lock people up without holding them ultimately responsible for their actions. We could use a primarily consequentialist moral framework. I resonate with the beneficial consequences of believing in free will. I also have experienced the dissolution of the feeling of free will and a concomitant freeing up of mental resources that were tied up in self criticism and 'should/ought to/have to' thinking. I have at times found it liberating to conceive of 'myself' as a natural phenomenon like a whirlpool in a stream or a flame and to feel that way: as a natural event, a happening. For certain kinds of activities such a state of mind may even end up being more productive even though that was not the explicit goal. If you recognize that you have no control then you may stop trying to control things and so have more energy to do things. I havent settled on either one of those. Some seemingly important things don't seem to get done unless free will, illusory or not, is used and applied.

Less than 20 minutes in, and it's already a huge deep and think provoking podcast. Fascinating.

@Lex Fridman Hi Lex. I'm a huge fan. I'm French, and there's no one like you here. Someone who trains his mind and his body. And you play guitar too. I'm a guitar teacher, and you're a great inspiration, with your podcast, your dedication. Oh, and you're always a great guest on other's podcasts. Take care 👍

Keenan Cornelious has a DVD , for Belt Guard. He also emphasizes a strategy against a strong judo player by grabbing the belt when standing , therefore you keep their dangerous hips away whilst being extremely effective to pull guard.
