Yep, they are telling the truth, but it is also absolute waffling crap, when all you wanted to know was which direction is north from here. I listened to this vid because I was interested in Ryan Hall's opinion on the most effective martial art for self defence (expecting BJJ, and yep it was), not hear him crap on about Warren Buffet's investment strategies. Or say sentences like "should I fight this one out, should I not, should I get out of here, should I fight for 4 seconds and run for it..." I mean seriously, wtf is that waffling crap? Finally, at 3:28 he actually talks about BJJ, wresting, boxing, etc

I'm from a country where people are not allowed to have a gun without government permission, but some people have a knife in their pocket (especially ones which we called "guys from a street"). So, If I have a conflict with such guy (or guys), I prefer not wrestle, only boxing. Because: 1. This guy can use a knife. 2. You reduce your understanding of situation around you, what if he has friends somewhere around? (interviewed guy mentioned importance of understanding situation around you) Opponent friend can easily smash you. I was personally in such situation, when I was hit in my back, while I was on top of opponent. P.S. English is not my native lang, so some errors in my message are possible :)

from your name i'm guessing you are eastern european, possibly Ukrainian. In the U.S. you still need permission for many weapons. You need a license like with driving to buy a gun and another one if you want to carry it with you outside of home. You are right about the wrestling shortcoming when multiple people are there. Boxing is pretty good any time especially with knowledge of distance as many people can't judge distance well in a street fight. I'm sorry you got sucker punch when you were wrestling that guy. Did you have friends? and did you have to run or did you get knocked-out?

In my experience there are people out there who have never been in the gym done any kind of style but they are diehard warriors and they will use anything comes to hand to hurt you. If there is more space: on the street it self a muay thai fighter probably should win. But not all muay thai styled fighter fight the way the thai do. It's more kickboxing with a thai twist. Than the last point: do 2 guys say oke lets do this in fair fight no interruptions. And no coma kicking. No sometimes people have an argument and just are talking and than without an warning some guy strikes out of the blue. The thing is there are sick people on this earth who likes to fuck people up for no reason. Self defence only works when done under pressure like real sparring. Or competiton. Not by stopping an inch before hitting the nose for example. Lots off selfdefence is rubbish. If you go for real stuff, do a full contact sport.

And if you're 1v1 you can easily try and get into his clinch (assuming he's not well a wrestler/grappler) and cave his face in with knees. There's just too many different weapons at your disposal. And you can battle your opponents at a close and medium range as well as get right up in their face with the clinch.

Punch thrown by a muay thai fighter differs from a punch thrown by a boxer. It may be hard for a boxer to close the distance, but a muay thai fighter might not know how to react to accuracy and speed of punches when the distance is closed.

@@Liudas- But the same could be said about the boxer. How will he react to an insane leg kick that might crack his leg? How will he react to getting headkicked? A Boxer might be a master at pure punching but a Thai Boxer/Kickboxer will have so many more weapons to work with and be able to keep the distance which the boxer cannot. The boxer's only chance is to hope he catches the kickboxer coming in. But a smart kickboxer/thai boxer will keep the distance.

yeah 9/10 any confrontation that leads to fights will generally be at a bar or club. Kicks are also a very good way of fending an attacker, a good leg kick or even a front kick generally will make them think twice, and isnt as dangerous as potentially knocking them out and their head landing on the concrete

4:05 Jiu jitsu at high level involves wrestling. Yes. And Jiu jitsu at the street level needs Judo. People who practice Jiu Jitsu are used to a class environment. Big guys, tall and heavy, while untrained are hard to get to the ground. Judo is extremally good at explosively putting someone down. In a street fight, that in itself could end the assault. Getting smacked on the asphalt is going to hurt. Potentially life threating too.

He is totally correct regarding scenarios and determining the situation. But if you have to fight on the street, boxing and being a quick runner is very effective.
