That was more than just great, that was a supreme performance, some Brecker, some Ammons and you would be well advised also with David Leibman.

I only really hear someone vibe others this way in community bands, and it's generally when a sub comes in and shows them what a professional player is like. They react that way as a defense mechanism because their spot is threatened by someone younger, so they try to immediately dismiss anything above a few diatonic 8th notes as non-musical. I don't know you, so I'm only speaking of my experience. Imo, Miles and his bandmates would play like Ryan, both in vocabulary, proficiency and musicality.

@Sax Spy yup spot on. I’m 49 years old and I hear guys older than me criticizing younger players but when I ask them if they can do it they admit they can’t. Music evolves and so do the players. I love Jazz but the problem with Jazz is the it is stuck in the 50’s and the 60’s and the old hands love to keep it like that. These young guys are breathing new life into the genre.

The dismissive comment about what Miles once said is not about jazz or any other form of music , it’s about someone’s ego and their lack of musical dexterity and fluency. To be able to play as this gentleman did is a testimony to dedication and total absorption of purpose over a set period of time plus a dash of god given talent. Loved his playing and after putting in 6 hrs of playing today at 1.30 am he has inspired me to hit it again and risk my neighbors sending me to jail. I salute this player and know that all the great ones who have left us are smiling as I was when I heard him!

I don't know you, though, so I'm only speaking of my experience. Ryan wasn't just moving his fingers. The lines have structure and melody and hold up when slowed down.

@@SaxSpy I am sure you are right, but my level of music appreciation is way below yours. I'm just a little amateur without any proper in-depth musical schooling. But I'm glad the trained ear can distinguish all these wonderful things you are talking about. And btw, my comment was not intended in any negative sense. 🙂

As I said, I don't know you but if was meant to be positive, I'd suggest rewording it to avoid being seen as vibing. Too many years of sotw have done that ha

@@SaxSpy I think we are never going to be friends, but going through live thinking how things you say and do might possibly be misconstrued by others is very tiring. I think the other party could count to ten, reflect and wonder if something is really negative or perhaps clumsily worded (not native English speaker, cultural differences) and approach comments that are intended to contribute to a channel might in fact NOT be negative. B.t.w. I had to look up your abbreviation sotw, indicating that I am moving at a lower level in the saxophone world than you and a clear sign you overestimated my current knowledge. 😉

Nah, that's an excuse. It was a vibey comment and got called out. It's always vibey to say a musician is just moving their fingers, especially on an emotional ballad, in any language.
