I think what you're hearing is the gear lash. Put it together with the proper lube and see if its any quieter.

Thanks! I'm going to need to strip the paint / repaint, and redo the bearings on the snout first - but then I can put the gasket on, seal it up and add the oil. Hopefully the oil will seep into the gears and the snout-side of the rotor bearings and smooth it out. I spoke with the rebuild kit provider and they said that the metal will expand when its running at around 100 degrees C which will further reduc e any play and therefore noise/lash etc.

Sorry tipsee - I sold the project on im afraid....hit a roadblock....then came into a little money and the diy build just didnt make sense any more. I sold the supercharger and all the gear to a rex racer crew - no idea what they did with it.

Nice to see you progress on this build. Not sure about the tolerances for the play. Would be good to look at the healthy one or maybe email Eaton with a question. Could also be that it sounds like this only on wiggling it about. Maybe if it gets up to speed and under load, it's ok. There are a lot of supercharger guys in the states, some could know the answer. Good luck!

Domas64 thanks, I’m kind of torn. If I was patching it up to keep my old car ticking over for a couple more years I’d be dead chuffed cos it would have cost £160 and would certainly outlast most of the other components. But my build will require it to run at 17000 rpm peak to get the airflow I need which a new one will do for many many thousands of miles. But the time and effort investment in this project will dwarf the money. So I’m hesitant. I might sell it on refurbished and look at other options. I might not. I don’t know :) :( :)

@@StuffAboutStuff just came up on this video. Probably too late now but the clanking problem is the rotor bearings are worn. There are bearings in the rotor plate that wear. The same type as in the snout. SKF 6201, One per rotor.

Hi Thomas, the engine began to fail and I ended up buying a better car (still love rx8s - but moved on). Once it became a full rebuild as well, and my car budget increased it just didn’t make sense to complete. I sold all the parts on to a race hobbyist with an rx8 - not sure what happened there. Hopefully the charger has been breathing some fun into a wankel somewhere :)

Hi Albert Well the engine was basically dead and my fortunes turned for the better and the project just didn’t make sense anymore - I now have 400HP and twin turbos without grazing a knuckle :) The project was sold on to a racing enthusiast - not sure where it’s gone from there.

Hi Seth No unfortunately not; life went topsy turvy and I’ve come out of it a lot better off. I’ve sold my rx8 for something much nicer with twin turbos already fitted :D Once I was a bit more flush the rx8 charger project didn’t seem so attractive. Half of me wishes I’d finished it and if had had a driveway big enough for two cars - I would have done. But no - there will not be any more episodes - sorry :-/

@@StuffAboutStuff I can look it up and see. I'm working on a 98 Regal with the SC a customer bought and got the SC going but it rattles quite a bit. Gonna just try replacing the coupling and if that dont quite it down. Maybe try to Change the rear bearings like in your video. Did help a bit to see your video. Even if it's not the same I imagine it will make a decent guide to follow anyway. Thx
