(1 Jun 1994) The United Nations suspended its operations in Rwanda on Tuesday
(31/5) after a Senegalese army captain was killed in the capital,
Kigali.
Around Kigali the number of civilian refugees
trying to flee the conflict is increasing. The route southwest of
Kigali to the interim government's refuge in Gitarama and Kabgayi
is choked with Hutus fleeing the two-pronged rebel advance from
the North and South. Some are heading on to neighbouring Burundi
and the Charity Oxfam warned the U.N. on Monday that Burundi could
follow the same bloody path as Rwanda if something is not done
about the hundreds of thousands of refugees ready to stream across
its border.
