RV Skylight Replacement and Challenges Faced During the Process

Our clear bathroom skylight is 4 years old and the UV rays have been breaking the quality of it down. So I decided to replace it with a better quality one and choose white instead of clear this time.
In this video you will see more than just my removal and installation but challenges I had along the way and some tips that may help you should you take on this job.
Another reason I decided to change the skylight out now is that my next project will be to install Eterna Bond tape on all the seems and around all protrusions on the roof in the near future and didn't want to apply the tape around a skylight that may fail soon. Right now I have Dicor self leveling sealant on all the seems but find that it needs to be touched up every year, buy applying the Eterna Bond tape over these areas I'm hoping I can avoid this yearly task and reduce the risk of water intrusion. I will be making a Eterna Bond Tape installation video and will provide a link to it here when it comes out • Installing Eterna Bond...

Seems the inner piece was deteriorated because the original dome was clear, allowing the sun to work on that thin, flimsy piece as well. If you use a stiff plastic scraper to get the old dicor off the rubber roof, it tends to not cut or tear the rubber like the steel scraper can do very easily. Also scraping it towards the hole helps keep the rubber material from stretching and bunching up like the corner did. Nice thorough job!

I think your right on the clear dome allowing the sun to break down the tin piece inside, I'm glad we switched to white I like it much better. Great tip on using a plastic scraper and working in towards the hole, I'm going to try doing it your way next time I scrape that stuff. Thank you for the feedback and complement

Great work. Gotta have a Harbor Freight heat gun set to low. And use plastic scraper! Nice work on the screws. My cover has several cracks and is now leaking. Gotta replace it. Considering nylon washers under the screw heads to prevent cracking.

What a great video. It’s a huge help to me, as Ive purchased a brand new travel trailer with a rubber roof from Meyers RV and their service department does HORRIBLE work. I mean HORRIBLE!! I took it for warrantied repairs and it was given back to me with only one of the 8 items actually repaired. I’ve had to fix things myself. The roof has made me nervous, as I’m more familiar with a solid fiberglass roof, which is much easier to deal with. Thank you for sharing!!

yeah I had a bad experience last year when I was looking to buy an RV from Meyers RV. I found one I liked, the salesman gave me his "absolute lowest purchase price" so I told him I would think about it and let him know. I went home to search prices online of the RV I had just looked at and found one for $3000 cheaper. Here is the kicker...It was THE EXACT UNIT at Meyers RV that I had just looked at! I called the salesman back and asked him WTF was up with his "absolute lowest price " he had quoted me and why the same unit was listed so much cheaper online. He told me they do that in the business (they have a term for it that I forgot) to get people to call in on a particular unit, but can't actually sell them for that low of a price. I confronted him about it and accused them of the old "Bait and Switch" at which point he got very offended so I hung up on him. Absolute true story. Buyers Beware of Meyers. Have heard a lot of Camping World horror stories too pertaining to purchasing and service from them. Are all RV dealers crooked???

Before using butyl tape you are suppose to put it in a freezer not heat it up. Do yourself a favor. Put a second layer of lap sealant down instead of eternabond tape. Eternabond once down is good for 10 years. Your icon skylight will last 3-4 years before getting brittle so a hailstorm or branches at a campsite cracks it. Much easier to change without trying to get the tape off. Use eternabond on seams, a/c, refrigerator vent and any straight item you can expect to last 10 years or more.

And when putting your screws back in start in the center of the widest side and screw in like you would tighten lug nuts on your car. Otherwise you will most likely crack the skylight

  • @robertlawrence7293

@@thetraveltrailerguy What I mean by rotted is the plastic is cracking and that can be from long term UV/infrared (sunlight) exposure. The exposure ends up weakening the plastic which can then easily break. If you start seeing the plastic cracking in a web like pattern then that is considered rot.

  • @thetraveltrailerguy

Here's a good article on butyl tapes (do not use putty tape, it dries out). I did not use skylight glue or sealant. support.rvpartshop.com/support/solutions/articles/62000076490-what-are-butyl-tapes-and-putty-tapes-used-for-#:~:text=RV%20Do%2Dit%2Dyourselfers%20use,your%20motorhome%20or%20travel%20trailer. I use EternaBond Tape around the skylights and vents and on seams, Its pretty much sealed so no rain water will enter the RV where sealants dry out over time and you need to inspect and touch up cracks in it often.

@@aguyandhiscomputer tape is the best thing. You don't have to worry about cracks in the lap sealant, it lasts longer, can be put over good lap sealant before it goes bad, close to 8 years I've seen on reviews on this tape and still holding strong, easier to clean and comes in different widths. I will be touching up my camper sealant and then covering it with tape after seeing so many reviews.

How much less light came in with the new white one compared to the old clear one?

  • @thetraveltrailerguy

    @thetraveltrailerguy

    Жыл бұрын

Here's a quick response :) I just happened to be on my computer when your question came in. I personally don't notice a decrease in light coming in with the new skylight. The light that does come in now is more of a soft light then a in your face light. Now that we've had this skylight I do notice less heat from the sun coming in, the sunlight isn't intense and I noticed the plastic shower enclosure is cooler from the sun not hitting it directly. I'm expecting the shower area to last a lot longer since the heat of the sun is being broken up by this skylight. Bottom line I would install this skylight again over a clear one.

Great question :) I like the clear but I was concerned that if I replaced it with clear I might be facing the same situation with it discoloring again. Also with the clear we were getting a lot of heat inside the trailer near the skylight and I was thinking that with the sun being unfiltered coming into the shower area it might possibly cause the plastic shower area to fail and crack someday. Only time will tell, I hope it doesn't discolor. After I installed the white one I must say I like the look of it better inside the trailer than the clear.
