EternaBond Tape 2 Year Review - How Is It Holding Up?

2 years ago I decided I was tired of patching the failing roof seam areas with Dicor Sealant and worrying about possible roof water leaks happening. I decided enough is enough and installed EternaBond Tape over all the sealant seams. Here's my walk around video review of how its holding up.

I put the tape on my roof a couple years ago when I saw your video and it's still standing up great. One idea I did this year that you should concider is cover your awning at the base with Gorilla Waterproof Patch Tape (Black). It comes in 10 ft. lengths and is 4 inches wide. Use 4 rolls so it covers about 7 inches out from the mount. The tape is a flat black so it will give the rolled up exposed part a uniform look. It is also UV rated so it will protect it.

I've been considering this method. I have concerns, in multiple video updates I've seen creases, voids and bubbles show where the roof was taped. Many posters say it's just the roofing coming up because it was not glued well to the decking. I find it interesting and odd that the roof is ONLY doing this where the tape was recently applied and not anywhere else on the roof the take isn't and have a theory that while the tape may definitely be adhered to the roof it is expanding \contracting and pulling the roofing membrane up. This is a concern for me. Thanks for taking the time to post the videos 🙏

Thanks for watching and your question Jonathon. I'm not exactly sure why this roof was coming up in the taped areas, I do know the tape sticks very well and is very hard to remove once applied. Personally I feel the roofing material was not glued down properly, the reason I know this is when I replaced the bathroom skylight before the tape was applied the roof material would easily peel up, I could see glue but it was not holding. The trailer is a 2017 Rockwood Mini - Lite 2504S - I have seen lots of Rockwood trailers have this bubbling problem without any tape applied. What year is your trailer? www.youtube.com/@thetraveltrailerguy/videos

I have a 2021 KZ sportsman 231bhkle with tufflex PVC roof and lap sealant in what appears to be pretty good shape. I've been watching a lot of RV roof videos to understand how the roof goes on and how it's protected to be more diligent for my inspection when looking at it. At this point I have a pretty good understanding of where water may get in and what to look for. I do have a concern on my trailer, I'm not sure if you've seen this before but the rear and side roof gutter trims I assume have a butyl tape behind them and maybe a small bead of sealant at the roof membrane to top of trim joint with exposed trim screws the length of these pieces. I see this as a potential spot for water access. Is my concern valid and\or is there a solution to cover the screw heads or other solution to attempt to keep water out?

Hello Jonathan, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner with a answer. The Rockwood trailer you see in the video is a 2017 Rockwood Mini Lite 2504S. We ran into a deal where a friend was selling their 2020 Lance 2375 and we could not pass up this opportunity so we bought it and sold the Rockwood. It sounds like our Lance Roof is like yours being a PVC roof, I must say I like the PVC roof a lot better than the other roof we had. It seems stronger and is much easier to keep clean. It does take a special sealant made for PVC roofs and I must say the sealant is so much better than Dicor, its flexible, appears to not break down over time like Dicor . I really Like it. Here's the sealant - Vertical Surfaces: amzn.to/3V4zVCF (I used this sealant on the solar panel brackets, this video is not out yet) Self Leveling: amzn.to/3UPX1f9 As for the gutter roof trim sounds like we have the same set up. Ours has butyl tape between the roof material and the trim, so much that a little bit of it is squeezing out a bit but it sure looks like a good seal. But I'm thinking about removing the stuff that is squeezing out and applying this amzn.to/3V4zVCF along the edge. I also have the screws holding the trim down exposed like you but I'm not to worried about water getting in since the Butyl tape is sealing the screws very well. I have installed tape around the roof vents as you can see in these videos and its working out good for me. Watch the videos and you will see how well the sealant sealed around these vents. I was amazed. kzread.info/dash/bejne/pqaWtbN8ldDccdY.htmlsi=bAtzkQxuVM2aBHYg kzread.info/dash/bejne/f62gk8aveK6dn84.htmlsi=JAjXqKob2tM9HYwQ kzread.info/dash/bejne/hJahssd7YZzFctY.htmlsi=uWpxswTShLr32xQa

Thanks for the shoutout. If I didn’t do the RV armor I definitely would have did the tape. My plan was to do this initially and then add the rv armor. They begged me not to do the tape if I planned on their service because they would have to clean all the tape off first

Great question Mark. This was one of my concerns when I was thinking of doing this project but once I was how well the tape bonded to the roof I stopped worrying. Very little water pools up behind the tape, in fact you can hardly see a small puddle behind it. I keep an eye on it and have checked the tape adhesion often and it is stuck down good. No worries. www.youtube.com/@thetraveltrailerguy/videos

One thing to consider, if something breaks on the roof, like my bathroom skylight did, have you tried to remove the eterna bond. When i did my seams and edges, a few pieces didn't adhere exactly the way I would have liked, but I tried to lift it and I felt like I was going to tear my roof.

Hello Robert. Check out this segment in the video where I talk about replacing the skylight and what I would do - kzread.info/dash/bejne/pWuhzNd8l6_Am6g.htmlsi=QJnPnR4QKhM6dCPt&t=293 If you feel water may get in there you can either put Dicor on the edge of concern in that area or place another piece of tape over that area. The most important things to do applying the tape is to make sure the surfaces are really clean and you roll it really good after installing the tape.

Do you think perhaps the Eternabond tape expands and contracts differently to temperature than the roof material itself does, which may be causing it to wrinkle and pull up / separate from the roof base itself? I can't imagine the roof would have wrinkled like that on its own. I'd like to do this on my roof as well but that concerns me some.

Great question John and I appreciate you being the first person to ever bring up this question. I hope my reply below is helpful to you and the videos I also shared help answer your question and help you with your decision. I was thinking the same thing but personally I feel the roofing material was not glued down properly at the factory. I have done lots of other work on this roof installing solar panels and when I drilled holes I noticed the roofing would pretty much lift up easily because of not being glued very good. You may have noticed more bubbling around the skylight, that's because when I replaced the skylight before installing the tape while doing so the roofing material was not glued down properly at all and when I was removing the skylight the roofing material was lifting up. I have watched many other videos of others that have installed the tape like I did and their reviews a few years later on different trailers and theirs did not or did a little wrinkle like mine. I have also seen people in FB groups post pictures of their roofs wrinkling and coming up without the tape in the same areas. I think its a glue problem at the factory? What model trailer do you have? Mine is (was) a 2017 Rockwood 2504S. Note: I just bought a 2020 Lance 2375 Travel Trailer and I have replaced some vents and the roofing material is glued down rock solid. Here's a couple videos of others that have done reviews on their tape install after a few years of being applied - kzread.info/dash/bejne/eI6urrCoorWnndI.htmlsi=Sf7o74j_0TOhoPrY kzread.info/dash/bejne/qmdru9h7gMK0f5s.htmlsi=FqjZy-GiF8YfjBJr kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKtl16hxYpeff6w.htmlsi=3rTOAx4onz7z95BJ www.hbfuller.com/-/media/files/resource-library/tds/structural-marine-bonding/bus/eternabond-10-aug/eternabond-eternabond-roofseal-tds_en.pdf
