    As a precaution, I would suggest to unplug power to your trailer on every start and shutoff. The surge you get from the generator during start and shutoff can affect or damage your trailers electrical system. Plug in after start and unplug before shutoff. I’ve owned several generators, and a few of them had a warning label to unplug power. I currently have a Rockwood 30’ ultra lite and use a Predator 3500 mounted on the front of the trailer. We camp at about 9000’ and I had to modify the Predator by drilling more ventilation holes in the housing. Haven’t had any issues since then.

    Alot of inverter generators have a delay before they let power begin to flow. Usually about 5 to 10 seconds. Bc alot of them have remote start not too so that would be irrelevant if you needed to make sure it was unplugged until you started the unit. I would simply make sure any high demand electronics were off prior to starting the generator. Mine has remote start so that's what I do anyway, if you have to go to the generator to start it then yeah it isn't too difficult to unplug it first.

    When powering down that generator by draining the carb, you really should unplug the camper first. Also, when starting, the camper should be unplugged also. Get it running, then plug in.... unplug, then turn it off.'

    The rating for this generator tells me that it is great that it will operate a 15,000 watt AC unit. It is on the border doing that for its rating. Since it is borderline, operating a microwave is pushing it. During the day, I would run a Champion 3500 to operate the AC then run the microwave, water heater, and other electrical appliances at night. I did this while gold mining, for a month, in the Black Rock Desert east of Lovelock, NV. 1 mile high and in the Summer. I just bought this generator from WEN. The magnetic oil dipstick, that I bought on Amazon, was a surprise to me as it DID pick up metal filings the first time I ran the generator for 2 hours. I also replaced the oil at that time.

    An elevation of 10K is tough on gas engines. Like you, I started off with a 3k+ watt generator to run all the appliances in my RV, but now I've come to realize that we rarely camp where air conditioning is needed. So, now I'm looking into getting a light weight/easily stored 2000 watt generator for camping in cool weather.

    Good demo - I doubt you would ever run the AC and fireplace at the same time, one is for when it's hot out, the other would be when it's cold, so, (really not being sarcastic about it) you wouldn't run both at the same time; as far as the microwave, your test showed it can handle the micro and the AC at the same time, as it would if you ran the fireplace (no AC) with the micro. I like the WEN.

    I live on the west coast of Florida and I just bought this generator a week ago to use as a backup to power some essentials through hurricane season. Last summer, I was left in the dark and heat for almost 24 hours after a tropical storm came through...not a very pleasant experience...so I had a 30 amp interlock switch and jack installed on my house breaker panel. It works great. It can run lights, 2 fridges, a deep freezer, a microwave, 75in. TV, and a small portable 12000 btu AC unit in the bedroom and more....I'm a happy camper.

    Awesome! Two cautions: Don’t overload the thing much over the max peak rating. In trying to give her a good wake up run after a couple of months of sitting I way overloaded it and blew the inverter panel. Fortunately WEN covered the replacement part AND service cost at a local repair shop under the 2 year warranty! Second, just ALWAYS keep that StaBil fuel additive in the fuel you put in it. That way if you don’t get around to running it for several months it won’t gunk up the carburetor jets! I had to disassemble mine to get her running smooth again!

All of the local garden supply people told me to leave the gas full up in the mower tank for the winter months (as long as the stabilizer is in). Would that procedure be the same - just leave the gas filled up in the tank when not in use? I'm confused, and don't want to have another carb situation with this brand new generator

    The high-altitude jetting kit will lean out your generator as it will be running rich at 8K to 10K feet. With that kit the engine will run smoother and may get you a little more power. The problem you are having with the power being limited is a result of the air being very thin at that altitude. General aviation pilots come across this issue on most flights. On a standard day 15C 1013.2mB and at sea level your engine will give you the rated power, but at 8K to 10K feet, your rated power will be around 75% so expect your 3400 Watts to reduce to something around 2500 Watts. If it's a hot day, it will fall even lower. All of this is true for a correctly jetted engine for that altitude. This is why your engine is lugging for that load.

    FYI: Amps x Volts = Watts, Watts / Volts = Amps. Add the Microwave and Air Conditioners Watts together, and see if the result exceeds your generators rated wattage. Remember too, that the A/C compressor is motor driven, and as such, it takes a little more watts to get started (surge watts).

    I followed another guy or two’s basic guidelines. Ran it with no load for about an hour, drained and filled (hot fluid). Ran it for another couple hours with 50% + load, drained and filled it again. Done! I did note on both the very finest of sparkles in the oil. As one would expect. So to have that cleared out of her system and running a fresh 3rd service of oil gives me a lot of confidence she’ll run a good long life. Will probably just change the oil each spring from now on.

    These inverter generators are awesome for us RVer’s. I really like that Wen but don’t recall seeing them when I was shopping for a generator for out 5th wheel. I opted for 2 of the Harbor Freight Predator 3500’s. I’ve added easy starts to both of my AC’s and that made it a lot easier on my generators. I can actually run both of my AC’s on one predator but it’s close to maxed out and I can’t run the microwave/convection oven unless I shut down one AC. So in hot weather I run both paralleled and the rig runs like she’s hooked to 50amp in a campground. I always run ethanol free gas with stabil and Mobil One synthetic oil. I’ve also added magnetic oil dipsticks. Exercise them at least once a month and they’ll always crank right up.

    I think it’s a Thule. You can make it a 2 bike rack or 4. Just bolt the extension on. I bought it as a 4 setup. It folds up and down. And sticks out past the spare tire nicely. Highly recommend! But there are lighter ones I’m sure. This one must weight 80+ lbs.

    Do you really think the different altitude kids are necessary? From the instructions it seems like a real pain in the ass to swap the Jets out multiple times and if you’re camping at 5000 foot one day then 9000 the next and if you’re coming from sea level it seems like a nuisance.

  • @CaptMaxADV

    @CaptMaxADV

    Check out my Jet Install video. It’s really a simple process. 10 minutes tops. But no, I wouldn’t change it regularly. It’s from the factory for sea level. I will always be at 4,000 + so I changed it. I’d say yes though, if you plan to run it upwards of 9,000’ like I do it is definitely worth the little trouble to change the jet.

I walked up to the Predators on display and fiddled with all the knobs, buttons, handles, switches and so forth. My opinion is that the Predator feels about as quality as most things you come to expect from Harbor Freight. There’s a place for those tools and equipment, and I use them accordingly. The WEN generator is in a completely different league my friend. In terms of fit, finish, satisfaction of use, and just overall quality. I’m sorry if you disagree. Whether one will outlast and outperform the other...? Well, that I can’t speak to. Did you have any experience to quantify your statement? Anything we can learn from your experience?
