Excellent work Graham! I’m so pleased to have selected you to look after the engine rebuild of my 1971 P6 V8 (GAN 340J). Really looking forward to the next video.

Awesome stuff Graham. Brings back great memory's of rebuilding my dads SD1 engine (camshaft and chain went) in the street in heavy rain in a freezing cold mid December with umbrella's and tarpaulins rigged over the car. A head bolt broke off in the block which complicated matters somewhat.

Very informative; I'm venturing into my first V8 Defender so it's good to have a simple guide. I've passed the link onto my buddies.Thanks very much

Nice work mate. I have done some diy rebuild from scrapyard 4.6 engines for my Westfield with great success. Simple easy engine to work on without the need for specialist tools. 225bhp v8 GEMS EFI for circa £1k. Bargain.

Thanks so much for these videos. What sealant do you recommend for the mating surface between the rear bearing cap and block (black RTV, hylomar blue)? Do you recommend any sealant on the timing cover gasket? Thanks again
@PenguinMotors

i use a thin smere of black RTV. In theory timing cover gasket doesnt need sealant, but these engines were not exactly oil tight when new, and time hasnt done the mating serfaces any favours so again i use a thin smere of RTV on the gasket.

beautiful ! i rebuilt my last rover [k] engine in 2003, that's 20yrs ago, frightening... is that a special rear seal, or do you machine to suit a later standard seal keep up the excellent work

its just a standard seal from a late engine

Hiya bud hope you can help with a question iv got, is there a after market piston like the hepalite that gets used in alot of the Ford engine's and if so is there a better brand to go with and who would you recommend for a full lightening and balancing of the hole bottom end?
@PenguinMotors
Жыл бұрын
you dont say which engine type your talking about, but pretty much all the replacement type pistons are equal whether your talking hepolite/ae/mahle/ks. whilst conrods and cranks can be lightened, 99.99% of so called lightened engines only have the flywheel lightened.

There looks to be a lot of meat between cylinder walls. How big the bores could be cut safely?
@PenguinMotors
Жыл бұрын
Rovers V8's have thin wall liners, to go any bigger on the bores you need to bore the block to take bigger liners, but in theory you can go as big as 96mm, the 3.5 starts out at 88.9mm

Good evening. I have a landrover discovery 2. With a v8 3.9 litre engine. I would like to upgrade the timing chain to duplex chain and sprockets. Will this fit on the standard camshaft. As I can't find the items in south africa.

It will as long as your engine has a distributor

Years ago I had a mk2 escort rally car, the engine was a 2.1 pinto built by Mally @ Blackpool Road & rally centre. It wasn't a high spec engine, it ran 48 dcoe 's & made 145 @ the back wheels. Have you encountered any of these engines? What did u think of them if you did? I was very young (21, I'm now 55) but I wish I had it now. What sort of price would you expect to pay for a good spec rally engine?

cant say i have heard of Mally. these days a good spec engine would be around 7k

a fairly high end rally pinto is around 190 bhp, its hard to get any pinto much over 200 bhp unless you make them a fair bit bigger. We do plenty of servicing and repairs on diesels but i don't tend to recondition them.
