Rusty Knife Found in a Old Boat - Any Thoughts

Someone gave me an old, rusty, somewhat broken knife to work with. I think it might be hand forged. It's a through-tang. Should be an interesting project. Any thoughts?

That’s an interesting one for sure! The ends might be aluminum.

❤I’m not an expert but I especially like old knives from the 1700s & 1800s - & I think that you have one. I’ve seen several on eBay and in museums - and I have a couple in my collection. Pewter was frequently used for bolsters and inlays back in the late 1700s. And brass rivets were commonly used back then. That blade - a short trailing point is very rare. It is a good example of an old trade knife except it probably was not made in a factory. It could have been made by a blacksmith but I’d guess it was made from another piece of steel like a saw blade. Skinning knives and some butcher knives also had trailing point blades but they were 8 to 12 inches long. I’d try to contact some old knife experts before changing anything more. Best wishes.

Wow! Thank you for that information. I'll certainly do some research along that line. I would hate to deface something of that historical significance. Much appreciated. Have a great weekend.

I think I'd keep that just like it is. Maybe put it next to an old reel. Cool knife 😊

That's a good idea. I've been a little all over the place with what I want to do. Might be best to let it be and avoid getting in over my head. 😂

Awesome find, need to do some serious research on that one. Maybe antique Hubertes or some German brand

It’s certainly not mine if it was actually in the boat, we all know where mine end up when I’m in a boat.😂🤣 I just went on kijiji in Ontario, some guy has a set of Grohmann knives for sale for 350 bucks. It broke my heart because one of them is the same as the one I lost, my Bird And Trout Knife.😢 I really couldn’t tell you much about that knife, but I really like it, looks like a great East Coast carry. What are your plans for it? My wife already bought S’mores,I guess that means we’re having a pool party.😂

😁😂🤣 Do you drink wine? Did you ever think to save the corks and then attach them to each thing you carry while kayaking? Aren't I full of Handy ideas? 😁 Sounds like a pretty decent deal, depending how many are in the set. How's the credit card balance lol? I think I will chop the peened end of the tang and pull it apart. Clean up the tang and then see what I can find to make new bolsters. I don't exactly have the tools to shape brass (unless i want to do a lot of hand-sanding). Enjoy the S'mores.
