Rusty Broken Oldtimer Scooter Restoration - A Time-Tested Beauty!
In this video, I restore a broken and rusty vintage scooter from 1969.
More about the restoration:
I decided to restore this scooter because I liked the retro design and knew from the beginning that this would be a very challenging project. I love projects like this. It was very rusty and broken, especially the wheels were full of holes caused by rust. The restoration process took about a month. Month in which I worked on it every day for a good few hours.
The restoration process went smoothly, but I had trouble finding new parts, especially the 100mm spokes. Very few people make spokes that small, but in the end, I managed with the help of a very nice guy who owns a bike repair shop. On this occasion, I also want to thank him in case he ever sees this video. The wheels were damaged by rust and time, and I think I spent about half the restoration time rebuilding them.
Printing the handlebar grips was excellent but challenging, but the 3D design was bought off the internet for only $2.46 and modified a bit by me to fit on this scooter. One day, I decided to leave the shop early and paused the print. This caused that ugly line you may have seen in the video, so I made another one. It was hard because I had almost finished the project and had to wait another 7 hours; that's how long it took to print one handle, but the wait was worth it.
I also chose to paint the scooter as it was in the past. Someone over the original color applied the green paint. I couldn't leave it green because I would be violating the primary definition of restoration. I'm delighted. I even found an original sticker with the company's name that produced it.
More about the scooter and the company:
I bought it off an antique site for $39.68, thinking it would make a great restoration video and deserved another chance.
The scooter was manufactured in the People's Republic of Poland (PRL) by the ROMET company. They closed the factory a few years ago, but the brand has recently returned to the market. In 1949, the largest Polish bicycle factory, "Romet," was founded in Bydgoszcz.
To my surprise, tires, and tubes were produced by the Dunlop company. This means that Dunlop, a Western company, somehow managed to do business with a country under Moscow's influence, being a satellite state of the Soviet Union. Usually, this was rare in Central and Eastern European countries. I love how this oldtimer scooter turned out, and I'm glad I could save it from falling apart. and I hope you will enjoy this video, too!
Now it's perfectly functional and can be used again!

Hey - if you use a new pair of gloves, and apply the metal putty with your finger, you can fill the holes and not leave all that extra stuff that has to be sanded off.

Antique and vintage are love❤! Keep it up!
When putting the grips on the handlebars . . . a small amount of liquid soap helps get them on and when it dries, it acts like glue to keep them in place

You should consider removing the tires from the rims and installing a rim band (thin strip of rubber that goes around the inside of the rim) so that the spokes won't puncture the tube. That's why all spoke rims, including these, have that band.

Hi! ✌ What a marvelous beauty you've re-created! I can't get enough at looking at the finished scooter. I love the close-ups you give us at the end; they show how perfect you made everything that was almost destroyed. I remember this scooter's time and the popularity of them among the young boys. I know there were millions of memories created with these. And I loved that you went with the original colors. What a knock out compared the that green. 😩 Thank you, thank you, for giving us insight into this beautiful piece of the past. Blessings, and take care. 💟

Thank you so much Kyletta. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! Have a great week!
This was great! I like the way you structure your videos, with some disassembly, then restoration of those parts, more disassembly, more restoration, etc. I prefer it to complete disassembly, then restoration of everything and then re-assembly. It makes the process clearer to people like me, with little knowledge of the steps involved (plus, I don't forget what a part is for as easily!).

Why didnt youbsandblast the fenders from the start and you used paint stripper?
@rustyshadesrestoration
8 ай бұрын
Because the fenders had 2-3 layers of paint, the sandblasting media will get bad immediately, and it will take a lot of time to clean it. Stripping some paint will make your life easier.
