Rusted Out Red Signal Lamp Restoration
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Will this ancient signal lamp light again? Restoration of a very old, rusted out Dietz signal lamp.
This signal lamp is super old and was very very rusted out. The tank has been sealed and its use is completely safe. The most difficult part of this restoration turned out to be the glass globe. Covered completely in decades of deep scratches as well as rub scratches. I thought it was just dirt; it was scratches. Making matters worse, the glass is heat tempered which makes it very hard to polish. The glass globe alone took me 6 hours to polish, and there are still some chips and deep scratches.

The amount of effort put into restoring that lantern was far for than what is was worth, most would never have bothered based on the extensive damage the rust had caused. BUT, you brought back to life a piece of history that can’t be replicated to the level of authenticity that your restoration brings - priceless!

I watch a lot of these restoration videos. This one was really impressive. I’ve never seen anyone else bring something back that was this far gone. Well done!
I admire your ability to problem solve around the siever rust and make a complete restoration. Thanks for saving this piece of history.

I **love** Dietz lanterns. This one was held together with little more than baby's breath and good wishes, and you brought it back to better than the day it was new. Glorious!

I love them, too. That's when simple, clever engineering was all it took to be efficient. But, could it get any better than the day it was new?😉

You have a rare talent. Your restoration shows the now and early future generations how we once lived, and the products that were once available for that era. Your restoration is amazing.
Time really took it's toll on this lamp, but you did a fantastic job bringing it back to life. Outstanding work, thanks for sharing.

Most people would just give up and throw that away or just put it somewhere and forget about it. Your dedication to the extremely laborious restoration is commendable! Thank you for the video. Now I know what to use on a few of my own rusted lanterns.

Watching these videos is like taking a master class on how to make old decrepit things new again. I have restored a few things but nothing on a scale like this when it comes to metal. Mostly I do projects in wood. But after binge watching as many of these videos as possible I'm developing the confidence to restore something I've wanted to for a long time. The rusted carcass of an old bicycle my grandfather got for his birthday in 1921. I'm going to guess the most challenging part will be to find rubber tires of the right style. If anyone knows anything about sourcing tires for antique bicycles I would be grateful.
I love Lanterns! I have 2 that were gifted to me from a client that I was a Caregiver too. He was in his 80's and the lanterns belonged to his father when the lived in California. Mine are no where as rusted as this one. Thank you for bringing it back to it's glory!!
Sometimes I wonder how on earth you're gonna restore these things that are in such bad condition. Then I watch and say "oh, that's how!" Great job 👍
honestly i didn't expect too much restoration in this video but it turned out to be a lot and I must say you did a fantastic job bringing it back to its glory. loved it ❤️

This brought back memories of life on the farm -- we had no electricity so we relied on kerosene lamps. This is an oil lamp but they have a physical resemblance to each other. With kerosene we had to pump the lamp to increase pressure when the light dimmed and also we had to increase the height of the mantle (not wick). Yeppers -- I'm that old!!
A wonderful signal lamp with a red glass prism, good in hurricanes or to warn Casey Jones about the washed-out bridge. Nice restoration!
Hurricane light - ah! my childhood memories ❤
You are amazing. All the complex pieces and you still manage to put it all together. I didn't think you could save the glass, but 6 hours later, it looks brand new.
Wow! Outstanding workmanship! You are a true artist and Craftsman! Excellent restoration. Loved watching it. Thanks for sharing! More than I could handle to simply repair. Well done!! Love the blue metallic paint color with the ruby glass also.

Yeah, that one was a bit knackered as they say. I think you did well for a one time on camera lamp lighting, but I would not trust using that lantern for anything else but a decorative piece at this point. The pin holes in the tank will probably always leak as the fuel seems to find any miniscule hole available to run out of. The body fillers will start to cook on the chimney too as it can get pretty hot. I have a lantern like that as well. Thanks for the video.
@AcmeRestorations
Жыл бұрын
The only body filler on the chimney is JB weld and it's good up to 500 °F. Not expecting any leaking since I did apply two good coats of fuel tank sealer. @7:20

Wonderful hand work. I admire your patience and workman ship. Really great.
Pretty amazing restoration. I was wondering how you would accomplish this with the thin metal and pinholes. Filler to the rescue! Great problem solving and the array of filler used was impressive. Fun to watch. Thanks so much!

What a beatuiful job. Congrats from Durango México. We used to have them at the farm when I was a boy. Thank you for bringing it back. 😁
Personly, Even with JB Weld I would not use a lantern in that condition again. The risk is too high it would leak again. For a display piece definitely.
My married last name was "Dietz"! Hubby said it was German. Divorced now but took my maiden name back. Kids have it as their last name though. ☺
