Russians start to realise truth of Putin's 'special military operation' | Sean Bell

"Russia is trying to encourage holiday makers to go to Crimea. They've seen explosions, they've seen the Kerch bridge hit....the truth about what's happening with Putin's special military operation is starting to percolate into the Russian population."
Putin will face increased concern among the Russian people as the Ruble drops and holidaymakers flee Crimea says retired Air Vice-Marshal Sean Bell adding that Ukraine might have found a strategic advantage as the Dnipro floodwaters recede.

Remember that much of the reason for low morale on the Russian side is that many of the troops are conscripts who had no choice. And the prisoners who volunteer are apparently literal cannon fodder: pushed forward until they are killed, shot if they attempt to retreat. But, yes, clearing mine-fields they laid should be the responsibility of the Russian army and militia.

Turning up the interest rate is interesting and you could very well be right, that this is very bad for them. It may isolate Russia, it may 'cut them off' and no one wants to trade with them? The measure of success is "kilometers of land reclaimed"? Maybe if you think of this through purely political lenses. However, in the US Civil War, the successful commander, U.S. Grant, was not really interest in reclaiming land. His focus was on destroying the fighting capacity of the Confederate military. He did this by destroying their supplies and killing rebel soldiers. Reclaiming land was something that happened while his army was destroying his enemies armies.

Success, in a war of occupation such as this, is indeed measured in kilometers...to a degree. But it's also measured in damage inflicted on the opponent's ability to sustain their occupation longer term. Call it 'potential kilometers'. Ukraine is degrading, disproportionately, Russia's supply lines and plenty of their materiel crucial to a successful, coordinated defence. The going is very hard now, but each day Ukraine grows stronger and Russia grows weaker. The kilometers will increase exponentially. Slava Ukraini.

To all those who think Ukraines offensive is failing, your idea of success, is probably based on Ukraines previous routes of Russia in Kharkiv and Kherson oblasts, and that is an unrealistic expectations. This is not a Hollywood movie and Ukraine are facing the, reputedly, 2nd biggest military in the who had 12 months to prop are! 🤔 . In 9 weeks, Ukraine has liberated 393sq miles of Russian temporarily occupied lands, through battle zones with well prepared defences. In comparison to Russia, supported by the entire might of the 2nd biggest military in the world taking 10 months, yes 10 months, to capture the half that area in the first place. Let's not forget that Russias mighty Black Sea fleet has to stay in the far east of the Black Sea, scared to come within 300km of Ukraines coast. Forced out of Russias regional navy stronghold Savastapol and the Azov Sea by Ukraines actions. All that by a country that doesn't even have a navy! Let's no forget that Ukraines airspace is a "no fly zone" for Russias airforce, who can't come within 15km of Ukraines borders or cities for fear of being shot down and are relying on unmanned drones to do their work with decreasing success. Let's not forget that Russia has evacuated hundreds of thousands of Russians, both civilians and senior officers, from Crimea scared of Ukraines capabilities and a Storm Shadow visit or two, to Crimea and the Kerch Bridge. Now tell me again you pro-Russians and trolls, that Ukraines offensive hasn't been successful so far? 🤔

China still considers it occupied -.- Israel is/was even weirder. Some fairy promised us the land!! Oh... well, then. Etc. In the end, the territory thing remains what it is. Something is yours when you have enough people agreeing on that ownership - and when you can beat the 'occupier' into submission - or make him give up land by threathening to do so. I don't think I've met or spoken to a single person who is of the opinion that the offensive is 'slow' or 'not quite up to speed'. But there do seem to be plenty of office jockeys/experts who _are_ of that opinion. I haven't got a clue what timetable _they_ had in mind, but it's obviously not the same one as the Ukranians (who are the people on the ground doing the actual fighting) and that#s a bloody good job, because all those bemoaning the 'lack of progress' would (apparently) be happy to see the casualty list go through the roof and a trail of dead bodies just to appease their misguided sense of value for money. It was a whole different ballgame in the North of the country last year and comparing the two suggests a very limited awareness of the current situation.

The irony of Russia losing in a war of attrition is delightful. Also, Ukraine hasn’t just been building up its arms manufacturing, it’s been building up _western_ facilities for building licensed western military vehicles and such. He's responsible for what he says that then influences other's thinking. If methodological guardrails aren't mentioned, citizens may start assuming every hit of a place where civilians are is intentional. I know I wouldn't want people to never consider the details or be critical about evidence. Of course, when Russia has been bombing repeatedly where civilians are, bombs damns, and doesn't try to save people on the east side of the river, it's cognitively problematic to assume the'best' of Russian army, i.e. that bombs hit 'by accident' civilians/civilian structures.

Strange analysis about the gunfight between Dagestan and Chechen troops. These ethnic disputes ofter occur over loot, fueled by drinking, maybe drugs, and family matters. Russian army is inherently anti muslim, with guys being debearded. There was a similar battle last year, this time between Chechens and Buryats. In Kherson, IIRC there was also a gunfight between two VDV officers and Ukrainian farmers over a John Deere combine (Later known as the shootout at the John Deere ranch). The Russian army can be described as marauders armed with soviet era technology, backed by a small pool of skilled talent. However, generals are not trained at utilizing the technology efficiently, since most was stollen from the US back in the USSR - and then improvised with old school Russian dumbness. Hence, when we talk about the counter offensive, the real issues lie in the volume of junk thrown at Ukraine. Its a long hard slog, with mines everywhere. However, let's not forget Russia has lost its offensive potential. It can delay the result, but not change it. They are now defending, not attacking. Putin still needs to capture a Kharkiv or Kyiv, otherwise he can't affect the result.

To put pressure on President Zelensky in the hope the civilians of Ukraine will force Zelensky into folding to what Russia wants. 2. Became Russia cannot beat the Ukrainian forces so Russia acts like pathetic cowards and target’s civilians. 3. Putler is hoping this will cause Ukraine to set up the air defence systems as far away from the front line as possible. This is Putler’s greatest fear is if the Patriot Air Defence systems get a good set up on the front line. 4. Putler is a terrorist this is how terrorists act. There are other reasons but this is all I can think of for now.

Suspending the grain deal makes the cost go up and hence west is saying poor countries are being affected. Its based on data. Russia knows about Ukraine’s supply routes but not always hits them. The metric of success is 11:1 or greater. That has already been achieved via vehicular kills or captures but not in infantry excursions. Even is 10:1. Although awful, US anti-personnel cluster munitions are neccesary to close that gap. It's going to take many more lives to make it to that ratio then beyond. Modern equipment, armour, and constant supplies are vital for Ukranian soldiers to close the gap.

There's plenty of footage of what they're hitting. For example the strikes on Dnipro obviously hit an ammo dump. A few days ago a hotel where mercenaries were staying got hit in Zaporizhye. Both sides are doing the same. Stationing soldiers in schools and hotels, hiding ammo and vehicles in warehouses. Both sides target where they suspect the enemy are hiding stuff.

The uninformed casual western person sees only in terms of “size”. The size of Ukrainian territory reclaimed from Russia’s barbaric invasion, the size of Russia’s army, the size of Russian armory, the size of the country of Russia compared to Ukraine. What people don’t reckon are the sheer amount of Russian troops dead: 245,000. Yesterday, Ukraine struck two gigantic RU ammunition dumps in Zapororizhia, and they do that EVERY day along with RU tanks, BTRs, TORs, EW systems, RU command centers, weapons depots, troop aggregations, Scooby vans, RU supply trucks and hundreds of RU bunkers up and down the front lines, choking off the enemy’s ability to fight.

Some history on what a small bridgehead could do. A small unit of German Army in September of 1941 crossed Dnepr river between Cherkassy and Kremenchug. Soon after the Panzer armies made rapid progress. On 12 September, von Kleist's 1st Panzer Group, which had by now turned north and crossed the Dnieper river on that bridgehead, emerged from it, and after quick move to the North connected with the General Guderian Panzers that that resulted in a huge encirclement of Soviet troops in the vicinity of Kiev. The encirclement trapped more than 450,000 soldiers from which very few managed to escape.

I think you are a bit harsh on Mr. Bell. There is little argument that the Russians have the strategic initiative in Luhansk, and Ukrainian movements/attacks in that area are purely as a reaction to Russian moves. That the Russians seem incapable of achieving anything substantial is another matter, but the very fact that the Russians are mounting attacks seems to have drawn in at least some Ukrainian reinforcements from their reserves, which appears to be one of the main Russian goals of mounting these attacks in the first place, means that the Russians have at least achieved something. Kudos on quoting the "unfortunately for Russians" line, I am going to remember to use that more:)
