Ukraine identifying where to 'slice through' Russian defences | Maj. Gen. Rupert Jones

"Ukraine are preserving their forces for that big breakthrough…I’ve seen no evidence that the Russians are going to be able to master that kind of skill."
Russia is yet to prove it will have the strategic ability to counter a major Ukrainian push in the spring offensive, Maj. Gen. Rupert Jones tells Frontline on #TimesRadio.

It is gratifying to hear an honest appraisal of the Difficulties Ukraine is facing and how without western aircraft they must tread carefully, step by step, village by village thereby lessening their casualties. As the man says Ukraine has the Crown Jewels waiting for the right time and the right place to strike, as he says, a hot knife through butter. Once that happens the Russians will have nowhere to go except home because Ukraine will not stop, whatever the cost, they will not stop.

'Ukraine has the Crown Jewels' - what is that, the Challengers ? Your own general said they are like dial phones in the age of iphones. 'Once that happens the Russians will have nowhere to go except home because Ukraine will not stop, whatever the cost, they will not stop.' They said that 5 weeks ago. Ukraine was going to launch a blitzkrieg and break through Russian lines. They tried but the Russians killed them, and knocked out Bradleys and Leopards. The Bandera army did not even reach Russia's first line. So what is your optimism based on ? Just wishful thinking ? Even if they break through at one point, how will they sustain - the troops can get trapped by flank attacks.

Excellent discussion. Good set of questions. The high note takeaway is the unpredictable nature of war; the nonlinear compounding of many unforeseen events to lead to unsuspected outcomes. We are watching the current accounts of Russia's GDP shrink quickly to zero; the untraded market value of the ruble a penny on the € and close to a penny on the $, the wholesale surrender of Russia's mythical 180000 troops, the utter devastation of behind-the-lines Russian logistics, the increasing partisan attacks in Russia by Russians, the staggering loss of Russian War machines in the field; the improved air defense of Ukraine skies.... All come together and force this war to a dramatic and swift end. Those predicting a multi-year war think linearly. War is very nonlinear. So they are very wrong. R. Banos' California

100% agree. It's like when a business goes bankrupt, it's usually over a long period of time followed by a very swift demise. The sanctions on Orcville have been doing there thing behind the scenes but just like a noose tightening around the convicted persons neck eventually its to tight to breathe any more. It's actually funny to think (outside of the horrific loss of life and buildings in Ukraine) that Putler's nation building folly has singlehandedly done more to propel the demise of Orcville over the past year than anything else in the last 50 years.

Inclined to agree that things can unravel quickly and the Russian state could collapse any day, but I think it's unrealistic to assume Ukraine is going to dramatically rout the Russians, just based on the last month of the conflict. Even if those nine brigades of western-trained and equipped troops broke through in Zaphorihizia, it seems unlikely it will precipitate a complete collapse of Russian lines in the south. The depth of defense in that area is significant and progress will not be rapid, there are several layers of defense to get through and the offensive could grind to a halt at any of them. Taking Berdyansk, Melitopol, or Mariupol may be a signal of the coming end, but we're still a long way from even that happening at this stage. Luhanks and Donbas are a different matter altogether, the Russians have been digging in there for eight years and it's a short distance to their supply lines in Rostov and Belgorod.

I was just a grunt so can't compare my understanding to that of a general but I think that the purpose of the mine fields, dragons teeth and ditches/trenches is to slow down Ukranian advances and channel them into defined areas where they can be smashed by artillery (as happened a few weeks ago with the first Leopards and Bradleys) so for this reason lately Ukranians have really put the emphasis on counter-battery effort, destroying 20-30 pieces of russian tube artillery every day- as well as hitting weapon dumps and logistics. Without the threat of beiing hit with 152mm ordnance, because russians have been deprived of their howitzers or the shells to shoot, the Russian defences can be overcome with better odds.

If the West had not supported Ukraine against the imperialist Putin, yes Ukraine may have collapsed, BUT this would have given Putin and Gerasimov more confidence - and the invasion of the Baltic States would have followed. 4. However what Western materiel support and Ukrainian bravery has done is to expose to the whole world (if not Russia) how hollow Russian superpower mythology is and how incapable the Russian military actually are. 5. Russia inherited phenomenal levels of military equipment from the Soviet Union and the world has witnessed the Russian MOD and Army consume those resources at a prodigious rate, largely to destroy civilian targets (Ukrainian cities, villages, infrastructure and of course civilian adults and children). 6.
