Putin ‘gouged’ by Xi Jinping as Russian economy shrinks | Danny Russell

“Russia has really shrunken and is now essentially fighting for its life against its neighbour, Ukraine.”
Xi Jinping is “lauding” Putin by holding China’s economic support over his head, says Danny Russell.

Our economy is struggling with uncertainties, housing issues, foreclosures, global fluctuations, and the pandemic aftermath, causing instability. Rising inflation, sluggish growth, and trade disruptions need urgent attention from all sectors to restore stability and stimulate growth.

With the US dollar losing value to inflation and other currencies gaining traction, uncertainty looms. Yet, many still trust in the dollar's perceived safety. Worried about my $420,000 retirement savings losing value, I seek alternative security for my money.

Not necessarily. China's economy not so splendid these days. Hundreds of thousands of their battery EVs sitting doing nothing except losing value as they sit in port storage areas across the planet. Cost to buy, insure, disappointing residuals and ever present threat of self igniting batteries certainly seem to be a huge disincentive to UK and US buyers. Plus US are planning to add 100% tariff on new Chinese cars. And if anyone can be arsed to search YT for China Observer or China Insider can see that battery EVs are not quite the thing. No idea who underwrites these sites but they don't toe the Chinese party line. Could be based in Taiwan for all we know ...

The IMF base their figures on what a national government tells them. Russia has not been telling the truth to the IMF for some time. GDP is a measure of economic output. If Russia spends 100bn rubles extra this year on making ammunition, GDP will grow by 100bn rubles - even though that ammunition won't exist a few weeks later. Its when you ask where that 100bn rubles came from to spend, that the underlying collapse of the Russian economy becomes apparent. Russia's war economy is being held together by creative accountancy, printing rubles, not paying bills to internal customers, and the generosity of China in the terms of its barter exchange foroil and gas (at vastly below market value) giving in return some dual-purpose goods and soviet-era aircraft spares.

One reason why China is not helping the Russians more is because only 10% of their export sales go to Russia. The bulk of their exports (I think it is around 60-75%) go to the US and EU. So, if they get slapped with sanctions, it will really hurt. On top of this, China is in the midst of a financial crisis, with foreign firms no longer investing in the country, massive real estate foreclosures and deflation (it is costing more to produce a product than they get for selling it). This has put China in a very precarious position financially, and they will have to play things very carefully going forward or they could fall off a financial precipice.

Xi must be worried by the current real issues in the Chinese economy and knows China's thirst for strategic position, land and resources, especially water that China is really short of.. All these things are available in China's historical huge province of Outer Manchuria that Mao wanted to reclaim and failed. Russia took the Northern part by military force in 1860 and Japan took the Southern part in 1931 and then lost it at the end of WW2 when the Red Army took it and decided not to return it to China. China's claim on Outer Manchuria is far, far stronger than Russia's claim on Ukraine and in the current power balance, China is a superpower, Russia is not and in a bad way, Xi has a very strong poker hand especially as Putin has come crying and begging for Chinese help! Even if Putin cannot cede the Far East yet and survive, China is pushing its influence Westwards into Central Asia, perhaps ready to take advantage if the Russian Federation breaks up like the 1991 Soviet Union did. If there is one thing that you can say about China and Xi is that they are strategic.

I would like to see people involved in political commentary to point out and emphasize that the purpose of democracy is to hold the government accountable to the people. In a constitutional democracy no one is above the law. States that have autocratic govenrment have leaders who have no accountability to the people or to established law. Having leaders who have no accountability to the people they govern almost never works out well for the people of a country. Countries lead by people who have no accountability or respect for laws are a danger to their citizens, their neighbors, and to the world community at large. It does not seem that in the current political climate we can assume that everyone will understand that democracy is a necessarily a good thing. Many people need to be reminded why it is a good thing.

English hasn't really got a direct equivalent. ʃi or ʒi are both acceptable. In China it would be more like ɕǐ but that is very difficult for an English speaker. How would you pronounce it?

China wants to be top dog in the world and is pursuing many avenues towards that goal. An avenue is Russia which is a big market for Chinese things. Russia can't get some things it wants or needs from the West anymore so it is considering some kind of business relationship with China. Meanwhile China does not want to lose out on doing business with the West.

In a simple sentence, in the context of economic globalization, China has defeated the United States with "high human rights", "low welfare", and "strong independent unions" by leveraging the "advantages" of "low human rights", "negative welfare", and "no independent unions" under authoritarian dictatorship. This has led to the phenomenon of "bad currency driving out good currency" in the context of economic globalization So the fundamental solution to the problem is that the United States and Western countries must exert pressure and supervise the Chinese government to improve the human rights and welfare protection of migrant workers who are Chinese farmers. Otherwise, it will affect the rights and interests of workers in the United States and Western countries Russia is a friend of the CCP and an enemy of the Chinese people; The United States and the West are friends of the Chinese people and enemies of the CCP Don't be afraid of the great cold, everyone work hard together-- Qin Hui

The GDP forecast follows a 3.6% rise last year that also exceeded the ministry's expectation of a 2.8% expansion. Russia's Economy Ministry raised its 2024 growth forecast despite mounting sanctions over President Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine.

You need to understand that growth. Russia has lost much of its income from foreign trade. Russia is using its savings to finance its factories to make stuff that gets blown up in Ukraine. Turning wealth into waste heat and scrap metal. This is a farmer with failed crops who is eating their seedcorn. It looks like a positive domestic profit but it's not.

A week later it's smoking scrap. Worth nothing. Adds no value BUT it needs to be replaced with another $1 million tank. So you now have $2 million worth of tanks? No. Your $2 million (on the books) is now a $1 million tank and a pile of charred, smoking rust.

Russia is in war economy mode. By staking everything on rising military expenditure, the Kremlin is forcing the economy into perpetual war. On the one hand, that means it will be increasingly difficult for the state to continue financing the fighting in Ukraine without causing Russian living standards to deteriorate. On the other, if there is a reduction in military spending, it will inevitably lead to a significant structural shock that will take considerable time for Russia to overcome. Either way, it will be ordinary Russians who pay the price.

  • @bobwallace9753

    @bobwallace9753

    15 күн бұрын

@@norsenomad Agree except for the perpetual war part. Without sufficient export income Russia will not be able to purchase the supplies they need to carry on a war for several years. To date, much of what they have used to invade Ukraine was left over from the Soviet Union. Much of Russia's wealth was being stored outside of Russia and it is now frozen. Russia will burn through its internal savings at some point and not be able to finance the factories making arms and ammunition. They won't have money to buy war goods from other countries.
