Stridsvagn 103 is not a tank. That's the whole problem. It doesn't have a turret, it's a movable non rotating cannon. And it wasn't developed with a gas turbine engine in mind, it was retrofitted with after the initial production series, because they needed a more powerful engine. While the T80 was developed with a gas turbine engine in mind, and it was an actual tank and an MBT. There are only two tanks in the world with that engine: 1) T80, 2) Abrams.

@@korana6308 The Stridsvagn 103 is a tank. Just because it doesn't have a turret, does not mean it isn't a tank. Stridsvagn is quite literally the translation for "tank" in Swedish (chariot + tank). However you want to put it, the Strv 103A was the first tank to use a gas turbine, hands down. It doesn't matter if it wasn't going to use a turbine or not, as it still ended up using a turbine. Even if it uses a dual diesel + turbine powertrain, it still used a gas turbine, and is as such, the first tank to use a gas turbine.

@@akitsujimura526 first off where are you from? because I am interested in different Indo European languages, and I know exactly what it translates to and even more. "Vagn" does not translate as a "tank" those are two completely different words. It is NOT a tank, for it to be classified as a modern tank, it has to have a turret. as simple as that. Every single tank has had a turret. Even 0 gen Mk1 tank had a rotating turret, just not on top of the tank. And the actual first gen tank FT 17 and every tank after that had always had a turret, moreover every single future tank will also have a turret - Altay, T14, K2, Arjun, next gen Abrams, MGCS etc etc they all have and will have a turret in the future. So it's an intrinsic characteristic of every single tank. you can't just remove a turret and call it a tank. It's simply becomes a movable cannon. Or at least not a proper tank. That is obvious to anyone who knows anything about tanks.

@@dhooter Youre a prick. You begin by saying it was a German first..while admitting it was just ONE tank..therefore NO active service. That means the Germans couldn't make their lone Panther as unfeasible as the Tiger and Panthers they managed to produce. You then go on to remind yourself we are talking about T80's, which ARE active service. Brits never managed active service with their efforts either. What gives with you NATO fanboys?! NATO tanks sucked until the mid eighties, with the exception of the Centurion. Russian tanks repeatedly were outgunning and out manoeuvring Western tanks, with better protection. We weren't told about T80's in the 80's. We weren't told Russians were a generation ahead of us regarding gucci armour, laminates, ballistic computation; and we're only now introducing a smoothbore onto the Chally, which is why Ukraine is getting the scrubs that aren't spares or covered by the Rheinmetall contract. NATO always was a paper tiger, which only bared its teeth once Gorbachev sold out the USSR. Now Russians have returned in force, where is NATO? Skulking behind the Ukrainians NATO trained to hide behind schools, hospitals and municipal buildings, same way NATO trained ISIS. Get somewhere.

tbf they are being knocked out for the same reason any western tanks would, precision artillery and man portable advanced anti-armour systems supplied by the west, currently the issue is the lack of suitable active protection systems on their tanks, currently only certain t-90s have soft-kill, however it is archaic and requires the turret to face the threat, and even then it is only against older munitions. also ukraine is using the same T tank series so kind of a double jab, which is fine as the tank should be replaced
