Russian radial engine - Russian radial engine Start and Run
Ғылым және технология
At the traditional tractor meeting in Burkhardtsdorf for some time a major Russian radial engine of an Antonov is always there.
Which was also filmed. Since it was very cold and damp in the morning, he made some problems but then start he ran.
Typical of old radial engines is the big smoke at startup, because a larger amount of oil goes into the lower cylinder, which is then burned.
The sound was deafening as ever.

If he turned the exhaust pipes towards the ground he could kill the weeds in the paddocks and get rid of any rodent problems

Wowww Spectacular! With these, people crossed the continents and seas at high altitudes... Hats off to the engineers those days!
Love the sound a radial engine makes...nothing like it! Was working at a local airport one day and heard this noise... couldn't tell what it was or where it was coming from. Then I spied a plane in the sky coming in for a landing! It was an old radial engine craft! Had to stop what I was doing and just watch and listen to that magnificent engine as it landed and taxied!
They used to fly an AN2 over me for many years, and given a little headwinf it could be virtually standing still and climbing forever outside my house, I loved the sound it made

I don't think all humanity deserve the praise for engines. For example, I am from India and with zero ego I feel so insignificant that I come from a gene pool that is full of so called engineers who still after 100 years when white people invented ICE, haven't been able to make a working motorbike or car engine on their own from scratch. There definitely are two types of humans, one is intelligent others aren't, period.

You need a dummy propellor on this to give it some flywheel mass load and make it run smoother, and also to blast air across the cylinders and cool them. The propellor is used in lieu of a flywheel on these aircraft engines... without one they aren't going to run as smooth, and they are going to heat up all the way to the point of failure if you keep running them for a long period of time, because they are air cooled.

Hi Bidone, you might want to add the words "inertia starter" to the video description as well. There are not many videos about that, so with those words it might pop up as related or in search results for new viewers. Wish you the best, and thumbs up! I suppose the original propellor blades also provide a significant flywheel effect, which could help with the rough/difficult starting... But granted this thing is impressive enough even without them.

That was my exact thought the second the video started. These aren't made to run without a prop. He wouldn't have as much trouble starting the engine either, with the propeller to help keep it spinning.
@andrewwilson8317
9 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right sir. I checked today at work and all the overhaul and service manuals tell you that running without a ballast or club prop is not to be done. It will result in damaging shunting of the gears as the engine loads and unloads between power pulses. The ballast or club prop keeps a drag load on the engine to prevent this. I would not want to be there when it lets go! I saw pictures of an exploded M14 that had been run without a load.

Justin Noker No. That's the simple way of putting it. First off, you anchor the engine. Secondly, you put on a wide prop that is short and incapable of pulling the engine. It's also a good idea to have a prop so that it doesn't over-speed too easily. I'm an aircraft mechanic, and doing runups is something I do a lot.
Wow those cooling fins! Nice sound. Interesting comment to share: Back when it was hard to find the recommended weight for Harley motors, I went to an aviation company and bought 50W for cheaper than auto 30W. Forgot who told me to check it out. Also forgot brand. Thanks for the perfect video!
