This is why I respect Roman. He's trying to warn people about this so they can travel in St. Petersburg safely and unharassed, knowing that most people are probably just gonna say, "whelp, reason 1001 I do not ever want to go to Russia. Ever." Which is sad, cause peeps like Roman are why I'd like to visit Russia. From one ghetto, free-bird hopeful to another: good luck, man.

@@davidgfisher I just googled it for myself, and Russia is definitely not in the top 10 most visited countries in the world. France, Spain, US, CHINA, Italy, Turkey, Mexico, Germany, Thailand, UK. People would rather to to China or Turkey than Russia - that says something to me. I don't necessarily think it's only cultural or media bias either. Take for instance, the cold. That's a reason I don't think I'd vacation in Russia as my first choice. As I said in my original post, I'd like to visit Russia someday. But I don't think I'll be going anytime soon...

holy shit i actually got scammed by this tea shop a couple of years ago i didnt even know that it still exists. i was in the city center with my friend and then a guy came up to us and kept asking to try some free tea at their shop. well we thought like 'why not lol' and went there (BIG MISTAKE) it was a very small room and there were like ten people or so and i got really anxious there lol so we sat and they gave us the tea, then some weird dude with a lot of makeup on his face sat next to us, he gave us two huge boxes with tea and he gave us a lame ass lecture about this tea when he finished, he told us the price of this tea (which was very high) and he was like 'SO WILL YOU PAY CASH OR CREDIT?' we were kinda shocked and we told that we won't buy this tea and he kept telling us that this tea is so good and rare and blah blah blah then he noticed that we were about to leave and he said 'UHH can you please give me a tip for my lecture?? you know i'm a student and i havent got a lot of money' we said to him that we're not from saint-petersburg and we barely had enough money for a ticket to our hometown (we were going to return back home that day) however that dude didnt want us to leave and kept asking us to give him some money lol. i got really creeped out by that place and the dude so i quickly grabbed my backpack, took out a 100-ruble bill (that's about 1.5 dollars) and put it in his hand, then my friend and I ran away from that place. i really regret giving him the money but at that moment i was just really scared :\ i know that my story isnt as harsh as other people's but anyways that was a very creepy situation.

When I did take the pic though, they charged me 400 roubles. I deleted the photos in front of them and left. But I had back up... since they were nice photos I had them restored.

How is this still going on? This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Like... why they don't run an actual nice Russian style tea room? You know, on the main street of St. Petersburg, that would be a magnet for tourists, with some nice furniture, tea served optionally in samovars, some nice traditional snacks, speciality teas for tea geeks, it could be a nice business, right from top of my head! And they hire gopniks to assault people and scam them instead. Like... is this making them more money? Idk, those people who run it must be psychos. Mobsters in training. They start on tea scam, then they gradually move to cocain, guns and prostitution, then to construction and real estate scams and then into politics, I suppose.

I arrive in Russia via St Petersburg in 2007. Loved it. Did the tourist stuff, missed the Hermitage cause of queues but did everything else. I didn't get harassed by anyone. I found navigation about the inner city easy. It was a beautiful place. I was warned about the dropped money scam and a guy I met from Mexico fell for it. You pick up a wallet, check the ownership and then get accused of stealing it. Then out of nowhere a plain clothes policeman or security guard turns up and you'd be scammed to pay from your pocket to diffuse the issue. Dimitri Demedev was meant to clean up the police force, did he ? Sounds like they are getting paid off by the tea store. In Australia there was these stores that would offer facials in shopping centres. They would harrass you to sit and they would have women do the facial who would get overly sexual when leaning over you. Then really hassle you to buy the face cream.
