Russia 1917 to 1928: Utopia in Power | A History of Communism

When Lenin took power in October 1917, millions saw the ghosts of Marx and Engels rise behind him, in other words the promise of proletarian revolution, synonymous with equality and justice. Very quickly, the Bolshevik revolution became a universal model, and communism a true earthly religion, arousing hope, awakening enthusiasm, justifying all sacrifices. This extraordinary seduction lasted about ten years; it only waned at the end of the 1920s, with the failure of the German, Hungarian, Italian and Chinese revolutions, and above all with the coming to power of Stalin.
0:00 The documentary
2:25 The influence of the October Revolution on the world.
9:56 The early years of the Communist International and the efforts of the Bolsheviks to spread revolution around the world.
16:43 The rise of communist parties across the world following the Russian Revolution and the influence of the Communist International.
23:15 German Revolution, the establishment of the Soviet Union, and the challenges the Bolsheviks faced in governing the country.
40:31 The influence of the Soviet Union on the international communist movement.
46:34 The appeal of communism in the 1920s and its influence on people's lives.

@@Garbeaux. - Hardly an apt comparison...to begin with, Uncle Joe was an equal opportunity killer: unlike Adolph, he didn’t make any distinctions between his victims on the basis of ethnicity, religion, or anything else; heck, he would murder and send some of his closest friends and associates to the gulags - he even had members of his own family killed. The differences between Nazism and Stalinism are of course legion, but the one I point out here is a very significant distinction. Ideologically, too, communism (even in its most extreme Soviet form) is worlds apart from Nazism and Fascism...

The era of the Soviet Union can be divided into six stages: The first: The period of the twenties, which includes the revolution, the new economic policy, constructivism, ideal communist ideas, the struggles of the various wings of the Bolshevik Party, Stalin’s rise to the highest levels of power, his victory over his opponents, and his obtaining the support of most of the Bolsheviks. The second: The stage of the thirties, which includes socialist realism, five-year plans, giant industrialization programs, large infrastructure projects, and the consolidation of Stalinism. Third: The 1940s, which includes the victory in World War II, the rise of the Soviet Union as the second most powerful power in the world, the emergence of the Cold War, the arms conflict, and reconstruction programs. Fourth: The stage of the fifties and sixties, which includes the rise of Khrushchev, the policy of melting ice, condemning Stalinism, allowing some internal openness, supporting decentralization, the return of Trotskyist ideas, and supporting global liberation movements. Fifth: The period of the sixties and seventies, which includes the rise of Brezhnev and the Soviet Union’s adoption of a conservative internal and external policy. Of course, the first ten years of the Brezhnev era witnessed high rates of development and superior economic performance with the application of the ideas of the prominent statesman and genius economist Alexei Kosygin. Historians consider this period to be the Soviet golden age, but the economic decline occurred in the late seventies and signs of economic stagnation appeared. Perhaps many people do not know that President Brezhnev is the most beloved figure in Russian history in general. Sixth: The 1980s, which includes the rise of Gorbachev, the implementation of the policies of Glasnost and Perestroika, and attempts to carry out major reforms in the political and economic fields and allow a wide space for freedom of thought, expression and political participation, but these policies led indirectly to the explosion of the internal situation and the disintegration and end of the Soviet Union.

Or lack of any choice in food I should say. Lack of certain kids of clothing. Freaking communal housing for millions in modern Russia right now today in 2023 left from those times. As in 1 bathroom, 1 kitchen 10 families. Until you ever see it, you won't ever understand what poverty is. I sort of lucked out, a Republic's capital, better supplied. But I went to a few places in the 80s, insane man. If KZread allowed links, I'd link you a little video. Anyhow all in it would have revolted, and did periodically, always brutally killed for it. In 1991 too many came out to protest, and the commies were not the same types. Putin today and his circle are way more like those types. It won't be like 1991.

Democracy and capitalist was forced down our throat by America increasing dictatorship. My country, the richest in the English speaking caribbean for 200 years, suffered from America bullyism, who made our country poor and crime ridden, even to this day. The world has gotten poorer since the Mighty USSR is no longer around and capitalism and democracy prevailed. Yet, the world has gotten worse. I have spoken to a few persons from ex Soviet state and they face more hardship now than during the soviet time. At least they say, education and Healthcare were free. History - seriously? Not a word on author of revolution (not Lenin), nor who paid for the whole theater. Also leaving out fact that Lenin wasn't even in Russia when it started just makes this "There was October revolution" story re-telling more shallow than it appears on first glance.

@@wiseguy8828 I'll try, research Parvost, and the Germany 2 million marks. Parvoist was the middle man. Even after the revolution the Germans were giving money cause it all helped to secure peace from the Russian front, and allowed another chance against France and Britain. It was all uncovered and proven after 1945 because the German's foreign ministry archives fell into the ally's hands. Everything was already suspected in Russia in 1917 too. Lenin was duping the Germans, then pretty much staged their own revolutions, Hitler was the result of all that, same as Mussolini. The crazy part was that All of Europe might have been very different if not for Lenin. But yeah on paper, and in speeches it sounded great.

If communism seeks the extinction of the State, why didn't the so-called "communist" Soviet governments abolish the State, as their ideology preaches? Why call the USSR communist if the State was not abolished? Can you understand that Socialism and Communism are stages of a process, with their own characteristics distinct from each other, and not synonymous?

The Government would have control over all Companys. End the Communists rely on 5 years plan. There they are planning what the economy should achieve in this time period, also in Communism even if the Company is making minus it will still be runned by the government. So everything goes to the government and they "give" it to the people. But that's just the part where it gets unfair in the system

But if a little socialism would be included in America's democratic Republic it could have positive effects. People wouldn't suffer from pain or die because they lack health insurance, students wouldn't have so much debts to pay back and less ppl would end up in the streets. Provided that conservative politicians and media stopped telling the people solidarity is socialist or communist. Here in Europe not everything is perfect but in comparison governments have empathy and sincerity for the people.
