The Tsars: Expansion of the Russian Empire | Russia's Wars Ep.1 | Documentary
Ойын-сауық
Russia is characterized by powerful personalities and significant conflicts. Power struggles and legendary battles have been part of Russian history, such as the wars of the tsars.
The early wars of the tsars, Peter the Great with his first great victories, Catherine the Great and her expansionist policies as well as the devastating consequences of Napoleon's campaign against Russia are the central themes of this documentary. Brutal tactics, political intrigues and tireless endeavors made Russia a great power. The revolution that ended the Tsarist Empire and paved the way for the Soviet Union is another focal point of Russian history.

There appears to be something missing. The expansion of the Russian Empire began long before Peter the Great. I believe the conquest of Siberia began under Ivan the Terrible around 1580.

Awesome! A history lesson, the use of actors, silent Hollywood films, actual battle footage, all narrated by historians, makes this video a must see. There's something for everyone. War and Peace to this day. No loud music, even better. 10/10~☆♡
You have a gift for storytelling. Your video kept me engaged from start to finish.
Worth watching. Thank you
Western Europe in particular has hated Russia for many centuries. This political rivalry dates back to Charlemagne and the religious schism between the Orthodox and Catholic world in 1054. This schism generated a whole series of clichés, prejudices, stereotypes first against the Orthodox Greeks and then against the Russians who had taken over the the religious heritage of Constantinople

Ioannes Severus was the first Russian Emperor. And he expanded Russia a lot more than Peter. However, Ivan's death led to the Time of Troubles. Still they should had started with him.

Great video
You are wrong guys. Russians didn't leave Sevastopol ( not Sebastopol!) but simply evacuated to northern parts of the port. So, like Stalingrad in 1942/43, Sevastopol was not fully captured by the enemy. Apart from that the Russian troops which fought in Crimea were not the best in the Russian army. Those were sent to the West to stave off the possible attack from Prussia, Austria and possibly even Sweden.
Based on a true story.
Thanks I learned alot and filled in holes , smiles Billy D
30:40: Good documentary but as a weapons nerd I must point out the Lee-Enfield was used by the British army from 1895 to the 1950's, and the British used the Pattern 1853 Enfield in the Crimean War.
I was hoping the video was going to say a few of the reasons why the last Tsar actually lost the throne. His military officials constantly lied to him and told him things were better than they were, for example they told the Tsar his coronation went perfectly smooth and it wasn't until later he found out what had actually happened. Along with military defeats in their east with Japan, the Tsar having three daughters before he ever got a son. The Tsar had 2 things to do, first expand the Russian Empire and second produce a male heir. Once the last Tsar finally had a male heir, he was born with a life threatening condition. The Tsar withdrew from his people once his son was born because they didn't want their citizens to see their son was weak and wanted to keep him as safe as possible. Then the mad monk came around, who was the only one who seemed to control the heir's condition, which made them dependent on him.
This is a brilliant documentary. I thought I knew a bit about history. But I did not realise that Russia had invaded Estonia etc and founded St Petersburg. One day Estonia might take it back!

"Ukraine" (common Slavic term means province, edge, region, outskirts) is a taboo name for designating Russia or Russia Minor (Russian lands of former KievanRus inside the kingdom of Poland/ Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth). This word "Ukraine" emerged only in 16 th century for the aim of avoiding the ancient word Rus/Rusia : which was tabooed, it was replaced by the Polish euphemism "Ukraine" due to fear of Moscow Russia, claiming for ownership of kievan Rus. Like among primitive people it was forbidden to give direct name of a totem animal, so the Polish kings preferred not to hear the name of their main enemy Russia (the Muscovite tsardom) inside their lands. Thats why was created by Polish occupants myth about some "Ukraine" (instead Russia) that is als ob "not Russia" . But Russia Minor (Ukraine) means central or inner Russia. Cossacks of Zaporozhye suggested to Poles the substitute word for Russia. This became the word "Ukraine", used by Russian Cossacks of Zaporozhye for description of the border between Malorossija and tartar steppe. Now separatist regime of Ukraine has been brainwashing the Ukrainians (who are in majority are just renamed Russians) with this myth since 1991. 80% Ukrainians = Russians of Russia minor or Malorossija, they are part of Russian nation except Galitsians - Austrian Ukraine/ The rest Ukraine is Russia in same scale as Krakow & Lesser Poland is part of Poland. Collapse of USSR was in fact partition of Russia but in post Soviet times Western fakenews & media implemented in minds of western people such nonsense that "Ukraine" is something separated from Russia. There is only one way to peace - restore historical borders of Russia and unite Russia 1 (Russian Federation) and Russia2 (so called Ukraine).
Good documentary however way too many ads, it's almost unwatchable. The ads are annoying me to the point of moving on to something else to watch.

They did get payed it’s called looting the enemy population (there’s also an actual system of payments but only given after the campaign ends) as for supplies ( food&Water) you take from the locals that’s how it was back in the 19th century and before the invention of 20th century military industrial production and supply.

You mean the size of Napoleon's army? Most sources agree that the Grande Armée which invaded Russia was of more than 500000 European troops. It was the largest army that Europe has ever seen, up until that point. But Napoleon and his Generals weren't capable of keeping this army properly supplied.

Russia! Won by the Russians during the Russo-Turkish war. Duh!
I couldnt see battle of Prut (1710-1711) between Russians and Ottomans. If the corrupted Ottoman grand vizier (Baltaci Mehmet Pasha) didnt accept the bribe that day, this documentry might not be existed. Entire Russian army alongside with its tsar was surrounded around the river of Prut and they were under siege. Instead of completely destroying that army and capturing tsar, Mehmet Pasha prepared and presented (he got bribed) a peace deal with very generous terms and let tsar freely return Russia.
Where tf is Ivan?

Cant tell if this documentary is face value, or is simply stating that russia is a "power hungery, land grabbing, blood thursty" monster. Russia is a great country... Like all countries they get ruled by tyrants and great leaders.
We in Europe know that there were no bigger barbarians than the British. We all know what the brits did to the Irish, Indians, South Africans and everywhere else they went.

Nope most are European with avg 50% steppe ancestry which is very close to the British percentage. Rest of the ancestry is made up of Western hunter gatherer and Anatolian neolithic ancestry where the latter is elevated in south russia while WH is high near the Baltics and the North . Northern russians have a 5-10% Finnic component , which is east Eurasian in origin but however northern Russians make only 10% of ethnic Russian composition. But estonians and eastern finns have a much larger east Eurasian ancestral component but we usually consider them Europeans.
