Russell Wilson with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. at The Richmond Forum

In a live Richmond Forum exclusive, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. traces the roots of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.
On April 2, 2016 Henry Louis Gates, Jr. sat down in front of a Richmond, Virginia audience of 4,500 with Richmond’s native son and two-time Super Bowl quarterback Russell Wilson for a discussion and discovery of the family legacy and influences that have made Wilson the man he is today.
Broadcast in Richmond on WCVE PBS, this Richmond Forum program is a homecoming celebration that mixes sports, genealogy, and American history...along with a few family surprises.

He was fortunate to be raised by good people. Too many young black men have parents that are a mess, especially having fathers who either get caught up in the streets, resulting in death or jail, or who just walk away from their children, like they don't exist. There is never an excuse to walk away from your children, I don't care how tough things get.

Are you serious? You are surprised that so many people in his family were educated? So I guess that you have never heard of HBCUs which the first was founded in 1837, prior to the civil war and the emancipation. There are many Black families with educated members...maybe you should get out more. That was offensive.

When she gave the " nice guy " the chance, she got respect from a good man. A good man that doesn't think it's ok to spread his seed to the whole community. Also loves her immensely and her child. Great nice guy and a lovely woman. So happy for them both

Yes, Russell Wilson is obviously an educated man, a star football quarterback, an articulate man, who is passionate, humble and charismatic! But mostly, he is God Fearing, a devoted loving husband and father! What a rare combination in this day and age! He should be an example to every young black man in America to bow down to put God First! They should all put down the guns, stop killing one another and follow Russel Wilson's example! Even, if Russell slips up in someway, no one is perfect, but he has given a lifetime of wisdom and tenacity for thousands of people who are blessed enough to hear him speak and know of his legacy! Yeah, Ciara and Russell are two blessed people to have found each other! I am not mad at Future, he damned well really messed up! I bet he never, ever dreamed Ciara would find someone like Russell after Future got her pregnant and he didn't marry her! I am so happy Ciara didn't keep messing with Future, by now she might have had 3 or 4 kids by him, and had to give up her career

Just considering how extremely rare it is to see Native Americans in most of the country, I always find it dubious that so many black people think they have Native American lineage. I guess that is yet another terrible side effect of slavery, a people who can't pinpoint their lineage would seek to cling to anything at all. Russell has a fascinating family history, he is very blessed that the genealogists were able to find so much.

I have always been a fan and followed the stories of Dr. Gates on his program for years, he and his team are some of the foundations of helping individuals come to terms with the prejudices and misunderstandings that we have been working to keep at bay and striving against ignorant thinkers. The power of knowledge is not just knowing but giving ignorance an option for ourselves and others to overcome and make a turn around. The best way for this is a united brotherhood and this team highlights the fact. Thank you and I'll look forward with anticipation for more sessions.
