There’s so much still that I don’t know about my family. Most people say that English census records can be traced back for hundreds of years, but on my dad’s paternal line, I can only go back so far as the late 1700s. I just finally broke a brick wall on another line. Can go up to my 4th great grandparents and now they are the new brick walls.

I love this program. The ‘Queen’ of New Orleans’ mother had great advice for us all, accept your history, move beyond it, and don’t let it hold you back from being all you can be. Be better because of it. True for all of us in some manner or the other.

I absolutely agree with your post. The Queen's mother spoke with truth, compassion and wisdom about a situation that was painful.

The slave childs family was so endearing to viewers. Made me cry...honor MADISON now and forever..celebrate his life as hard as it was ..celebrate his bday which God only knows if he was ever celebrated .. poor sweet child didnt deserve that life and thank you for sharing a portion of his story and your family history

Love that story of the African American family finding their ancestors place in history. Saw all those familiar street names from the 7th Ward. And the great great great grandfather role in Union army during the Civil War is priceless. My ancestors served in the 75th/85th infantry of the Corps D'afrique (USCT) who fought at the infamous battle of Port Hudson.

I love this! My good friend grew up in the 7th ward and he has invited me over to hang out at his friend’s house over there. I recognized the street names too. It is so cool to know some of the history.

Great show, as usual, but heartbreaking at times. America NEEDS Black history in the schools, all ages. Right?

laughing at the statement of how the US needs 13.4% history? while black slaves were tracked and documented in history so there is a history..while my native ancestors were hunted down and killed, genocide, like animals with no records, by white and blacks, and were captured and sold into slavery way before blacks ever arrived in north america but lets not mix facts with fiction here..but lets give the foreign nationals who invaded north more credibility? no not ever...the virtue signalling is pathetic..meanwhile all the slaves had a chance to go back to Africa Liberia...and this is the result, while my ancestors never had the chance to have our land back

I thought they very clearly explained why Adele had the money to buy this house. He actually said if her husband had not served in the military, Adele would not have had the pension to buy that house.

It is not AT ALL a coincidence that their ancestors were from the same exact place in Sicily and ended up in the same place in the U.S.. The genealogist should know this. Many places in the U.S. had Italians settling from the exact small towns in Italy. Many residents of that village only knew about certain exact places in the U.S. by word of mouth and ended up in the same cities and neighborhoods in the U.S. Also the systems/family in a village that paid for them to come over would send them to the same place. It's very common. Whole neighborhoods in NYC are from the same exact village in Italy and speak/spoke the specific dialect of that village. The witness on the births in Italy was most likely a town Godfather who would be present at many births and baptisms (who may have helped send both over even if from separate families).

I love this program. It’s so fascinating to hear about these people and their families experiences. I have been tracing my ancestry. And I have been stuck. I have discovered information from Ancestry DNA, 23 and Me, and Family Search (the Mormon Church genealogy database). And I know that my parents were cousins 4th or 5th. I know through who on my Mom’s side. And I have a general idea for my Dad’s side. So I’m trying to figure it out. But I’m stuck.

@@tst1200 I know thru Ancestry that 4 cousins are connected to me through both my Mother and Father’s side’s. I’m on the first cousin I saw was connected that way. I know his Great grandmother is my great great Aunt. My Mothers great aunt on her Dad’s side. But I can’t figure out who exactly he is related to on my Dad’s side. I believe from what I have been able to figure out on my own. That he is related to I believe my Dad’s Mother’s side. My Dad’s mother’s maiden name is Martin. And I believe he is related to Lemer Martin but to be honest I don’t know exactly who he is. Because he has been listed as Lemer and Lamer and Lee Myer Martin. So that’s partly what I’m confused over. And I’m not sure if he is an uncle to my Grandma or my great grandfather.

How about “learning the ropes”? Sailing ship’s sails and masts were controlled by many, many ropes. Some warships had hundreds of these that terminated along the gunwales of the ship from stem to stern. Young sailors would require months to learn the purpose and use of all these various lines. Hence “learning the ropes” meant to learn the job / business / trade to we land lubbers.

The first story was so interesting!

30:54 Yeah, death certificates & funeral home records are a great reliable source for where your ancestor is buried. But sometimes they can't be trusted for where they are buried. They might have a record for them with burial listed but it might not be correct. For example, I know of a man-who isn't a direct ancestor of me-that was said to be buried in 2 different cemeteries (3 if you include what his Find A Grave memorial previously said). All his death certificate said is that he was buried at Ebenezer Church. The only 2 churches with Ebenezer in their name located in the county he died in are Ebenezer Methodist & Ebenezer Lutheran. Neither have any record or grave for him. Obituary said Ebenezer Lutheran. But, as I've said, church has no record or grave for him. Funeral home record said Chestnut Hill located in the city he died in. But Chestnut Hill also had no record for him.

That young relative of Adele's is so invested in the "strong black woman" that she didn't even acknowledge where the money came from to buy the house. Adele's husband fought and died in the war! It was HIS pension that provided the means for Adele to become a homeowner.

He died a year after the 1890 schedule. Not in the war. Adele deserves a lot of credit as a POC and a single mother of six. As Adele's decendant, that young relative is justified being very proud.

@@lindawilliamson8979yes, agreed. The pension was only one facet of her success. She worked hard and used what her husband had earned and left to her to create a legacy for her family. Truly something to be proud of!!

You're making a judgment based on a clip. She used his pension money to buy it, but I'm sure that money didn't keep nor maintain it all those years AND raise those children. Let that baby be proud of her ancestor.

Awful quality. Hard to watch.

These ladies are all about their 'bad B'dbl great granny buying a house, and the poor investigator struggles to point out a man had to die for that to happen. But still, in the end its about being a strong black woman doin what she want to do. Fine. But their premise is a lie. Men died for her to get a home. Very little mention or respect.

The lady who say she a “Queen” only exist as a “Queen” in her own mind, ridiculous.
